Judge D. W. Bolen was born near Hillsville, Virginia on August 17, 1850. Taught school, and studied law from 1869-1877 under Judge R. M. Brown. Admitted to the bar in 1879, served as judge 1879-1883. Elected to the House of Delegates in 1883. Appointed as a Circuit Court Judge in 1890. Member of the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1901.
