p. 1 : No. 1: May 2d 1796: King SCOTT aged 27 years, dark complexion, about 5 feet 6 inches high, heavy built, emancipated by Strangeman HUTCHINS in Goochland Court.

No. 2: Peter WASON (Mason?) aged 26 years, yellow complexion, about five feet ten inches high, large built, emancipated by a Judgment of the county court of Washington the 17th day of September 1795.

No. 3: Augt. 3rd 1802: William KING, a black man aged about 24 years, five feet seven or eight inches high born free as appears by the affidavit of certain persons by whom he was raised.

No. 4: Harry COUSINS, a Mulatto man slender made about 24 years of age, five feet six or seven inches high, reported to have been born free and as such has been recognized by the law.

No. 5: Jany 18th 1804: LUCK, otherwise called CATE, a mulatto woman aged about forty years, four feet eleven inches high, slender made, free born as appears by affidavits filed in the Clerks Office Feb 22d. Examd. by Court.///

p. 2: No. 6: PATT, a mulatto woman aged about 31 years, five feet two inches high, free born as appears by certain affidavits filed in the Clerks Office.

No. 7: PATTY, a black woman aged 18 years, Black colour, five feet two inches high, Slender made, emancipated by the judgment of the County Court of Washington the 21st day of August 1812. Sept 26th 1812.

No. 8: Fincastle STERRITT, a mulatto man about thirty two years of age, five feet 8 ¾ inches high, large whiskers, emancipated by Deed from Charles S. CARSON, recorded in the County Court of Washington. August the 7th 1813.

No. 9: William BROADY, a mulatto man, about 28 years old the 20th Feb last, born 20th Feb 1786, born free in Washington County, five feet 6 ½ inches high.

No. 10: Eliza COX, alias Eliza CHAPMAN, a bright yellow woman twenty three years of age, five feet seven inches high, has a small scar in her forehead, a large scar on the p. 3: right arm below the elbow, and a very visible black mole in her right hand. Free born in the County of Augusta as appears by a copy of her register in the said County of Augusta, November 24th 1816.

No. 11: Isaac FISHER, a Mulatto man about twenty nine years of age, about five feet eleven inches high, a remarkable scar on his left hand between the thumb & fore finger a scar over his right eye and by occupation a Shoemaker. Free born as appears by a Copy of Register in the County of Dinwiddie No. 407 & dated 22d Apl. 1812. – October 19th 1818.

No. 12: John, alias John WAKE, a Black man about twenty five years of age, about five feet five & a half inches high. A scar on his right hand & leg & a scar on his left hand, thigh & foot & by occupation a Black Smith. Emancipated by the judgment of the Superior Court of Law for Washington County the 29th day of September 1820. Aug. 17th 1821.

No. 13: Joseph ALEXANDER, a yellow man, about five feet eight inches high, about Thirty one years old, has a lump on his forehead said to be occasioned by a fall. Free born as appears by a Certificate of his Register in the Office of the Hustings Court of Staunton. Jany. 20th 1823.

p. 4: No. 14: OLIVER, a very black man, about thirty years of age, about five feet nine inches high. A large Scar on the left Side of his neck extending to & effecting his ear. Free born in the County of Smith. Feby 17th 1824. (Perhaps: See Oliver Wright, FPC, 1850c, WCV; murdered by J. Snead, c1856. Jh)

No. 15: SPENCER, a mulatto man, about twenty seven years of age, five feet eight inches high, right eye injured and a small felon on it, a large Scar on the top of his right foot cut with an axe, a scar on the left side of his neck just below the ear. Free born in the County of Washington as appears by the affidavit of Francis SMITH. Feby. 17th 1824. (Perhaps: See Spencer Kilpatrick, FPC, 1850c, WCV –jh)

No. 16: Polly COX, a mulatto woman twenty eight years of age was born free in Goochland county – has lived in Washington county about 20 years and passed as a free woman.

No. 17: Eliza COX, a mulatto girl born free in the county of Washington on the 16th day of December 1815, daughter of Polly COX.

p. 5: No. 18: copy delivered: John BYRD, aged twenty one years, five feet seven & three quarter inches high, brown complexion, a scar on the middle finger of the right hand, by occupation a planter, born free, as appears by a certificate of his register in the county of Dinwiddie. April 25th 1831.

No. 19: copy delivered: Edmund MUNFORD, aged twenty (blank) years, five feet five & a half inches high, black complexion, two small scars on his forehead, by occupation a planter, born free, as appears by a certificate of his register in the county of Dinwiddie April 24th 1831. Born in 1804.

No. 20: JOHN, alias John TATE, a dark mulatto, five feet six & a half inches high, twenty five or six years of age. Emancipated by Deed from the heirs of Genl. William TATE decd. Sept 27th 1831.

Note: The register is undated, but reference to County of Smyth (sic) date it to 1832 or thereafter. – jh
