Floyd County, Virginia Census — 1860

Transcript by Jeffrey C. Weaver 1992

Introduction

The 1860 Federal Census for Floyd County, Virginia, the last taken before the great conflagration – the War for Southern Independence. As such, this census may be the only record to link children to fathers who died in that conflict. This census is further important, in that it gives more detail on the social stratification of Southern Society, even Southern Society on the rim of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.

The population of Floyd County in 1860 amounted to 8236, 7854 of whom were free, while the 1990 population of the 381 square mile county was only 12,005. This indicates that much of the natural increase of the county has migrated elsewhere to work. Neighboring Roanoke County became industrialized in the early 20th century and no doubt siphoned off much of the population of this still rural, very beautiful county.
