Before going on public works, Ben did farm work. After that came Southern Gypsum, W.P.A., and then Mathieson. From 1930-34 he worked at “The River,” referring to Mathieson Alkali. From 1934-40 for the W.P.A. From 1940 until his retirement in 1947 at North Holston.

Ben states that some of his bosses and fellow-workers were H. A. Reutchi, Wyndham McCready, Mr. St. John, George Bryant, Bill Workman, Bill Keller, Verl Cassidy, Floyd Helton, George Puckett, Jim Thompson and Joe Brown. Ben says he has worked for ten hours per day at five cents per hour. Surely this must have been on farms when he was a boy.

One cannot visit Ben’s home without getting a dose of “his dulcimer.” And let us say that the dose is not bitter. He does an excellent job of strumming the three strings on his beloved dulcimer. This instrument is almost exclusive “Blue Ridge Mountain” in character, and Ben is playing his seventh one, or rather he has “worn out” six of them. He is much in demand at church services and socials. He has made several records of mountain music and hymns, but has not made any “money out of it.” When a person hears Ben play, he cannot but think “he is one of the last of our mountain music-makers.” Ben earns the distinction of hand-making most of his own instruments, an art that has all but disappeared from the mountains of Southwest Virginia.

Mr. Dinsmore retired in 1947 and spends his time working for the neighbors, reading the Bible and going to Church – and playing the Dulcimer. Ben states that he enjoyed working for Mathieson and thought well of his co-workers. He says he likes all of his neighbors at Cedar Branch, and enjoys passing the “time of day” with them. He belongs to the Macedonia Freewill Baptist Church, and attends when he can.

Ben, we hope that your retirement will continue to be a happy one, and we all appreciate your making life brighter for all of those around you.”

HOLMES, George Washington

(pub. 27 February 1969)

“Mr. Holmes was born April 10, 1893, at Lyndale, Washington County, Virginia. He is the son of Sam A. and Callie Grey Henderson.

George says his formal education extended to three whole days in grammar school. He states, however, that his real education started when he left school and began trapping, fishing, hunting and clearing new farm land. He began supporting himself when fourteen years old.

George tells a good story on how he started working for the Mathieson Alkali Works in 1907. He slipped up the river to see what the big plant looked like. When he got inside Mr. Hutton Frye saw him and was chasing him out of the plant. He hallowed at George and asked him what he was doing there. George said, “I am looking for a job.” Mr. Frye said, “Wait a minute and I will go to see the super.” The “Super” was Mr. Dick Humphreys. He looked the boy over, asked him his name, and hired him on the spot – fifty cents a day.

This was George’s first day on the job and he worked around 35 years for Mathieson, retiring in 1956.

On August 8, 1916 Mr. Holmes married the former Miss Irene Nunn. They have four sons (James R., Harvey S., Raymond G. and Clarence W.); two daughters, (Mrs. Roy Yontz and Mrs. Early Church). There are 21 grandchildren. George says that his two daughters also worked at Mathieson – putting labels on cans of lye.

Some of Mr. Holmes’ bosses and co-workers were Vic Grace, Charlie St. John, Bill Keller, Bill Workman, Verle Cassidy, Rob Hogston, and Hutton Frye.

Mr. Holmes attends the Freewill Baptist Church at upper Poore Valley.

George is spending his retirement years doing, of all things, trapping. Says he caught three mink last month. He also hunts squirrels as much as he can. All that, plus some gardening and fishing, sounds like a real good retirement. Keep it up, George, especially that mink trapping.”

HURLEY, George Austin

(pub. 27 February 1969)

“Mr. Hurley was born June 27, 1883, at Silas Creek, Ashe County, North Carolina. He was the son of James and Virginia H. Hurley. His education extended to completion of grammar school.

George’s first work was with the iron ore mines at Silas Creek. In 1889[age 6? – as written]he worked for Mathieson for a few months, and then returned to North Carolina to work in a logging camp. In February 1908 he returned to Saltville to work at Mathieson for six months – returning to North Carolina to farm. In November 1912, he again came to Mathieson – and stayed for almost 40 years.

In 1912 Mr. Hurley married the former Miss Malenia Dee Eller. They have two daughters (Mrs. Joe Phipps and Mrs. Haven Howe); a deceased son, unnamed; and a deceased daughter, Omagene. There are two granddaughters.

Some of George’s bosses and co-workers were Joe Tapsplet, Ed Ward, Curran Sanders, “Buckeye” Henry, P. K. Caulk, J. K. Wilson, J. P. DeBusk, Henry Taylor, Louis Arnold, Clint Smith, Scott Cassell, Jim Flournoy, Dave Collins, Grady Walls, Lynn Henegar, Tom Henegar, Bob Catron, Howard Puckett, Jim Frye, Toll Barrett, Marion Chapman, Albert Chapman and Carl Rector.

Mr. Hurley tells the story of an accident at the plant: one day Jim Hogston brought his hoist down to fill up with water. Number 5 engine came down the track, and for some unexplained reason ran into the hoist, knocking Jim and the cab clear off. No one was hurt, not even Jim, and he went walking down the track singing, “Fifty Miles of Elbow Room” while Mr. Cassidy and Mr. Burton headed toward the office to try to explain the accident. George is spending his retirement visiting his grandchildren and making a big garden. Good luck, George, and remember me when those spring onions are ready.”

For the first years he was a section hand on the railroad, and then spent two years with the carpenter gang. After this he settled down with the repair department for the balance of his years at “the Alkali Plant.” Mrs. Phipps was the former Miss Nannie A. Mullins of Smyth County. They have five children, all living at Saltville. Mr. Phipps makes his home at Allison’s Gap (1952).
