Patrick was formed from Henry in 179, and is the only county in the State that has extended the honor of its name to any of its subdivisions. It lies on the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge mountains, which separate it from Carroll and Floyd counties. Franklin county is on the north and Henry on the east, while the State of North Carolina forms its southern boundary. Its natural scenery is romantic and wild. The Dan, Smith and Mayo rivers take their rise in this county, and extending through its every part, plentifully water and furnish it with abundant power for the operating of mills and iron and machine works, many of which will now, no doubt, be built, since the extension to the Courthouse of the Danville and New River railroad, which furnishes convenient transportation to market for the manufactures and products. The face of the country is broken, much of the western part being mountainous and unimporved, but the "Meadows of Dan" section and that portion south of the Bull mountains are remarkably rich and productive and well adapted to the growth of tobacco, corn, buckwheat and the grasses. Fine cattle, horses, and sheep are raised, and the orchard, dairy, and garden products are varied and valuable. Patrick is one of the best fruit-growing counties in the State, and many thousand barrels are annually shipped to the northern markets. The increased facilities of transportation will give to the industries of the people such impetus as they have never enjoyed before. The ores found in the country are iron (magnetic), lead, copper, and silver; granite and sand stone are also quarried to some extent. There are several sulphur springs, which have a local reputation. The timbers in which the county abounds, are oak, pine, locust and walnut. Stuart the county seat, is the present western terminus of the Danville and New River (narrow guage) Railroad. It is on the south branch of the Mayo river, at the southern base of the Bull mountains. It is growing and thriving town, and has a population of about 500. The county has an area of 576 square miles, or 368,678 acres, and the land has an average assessed value of $2.58 per acre.
