Albemarle County, situated at the eastern base of the Blue Ridge mountains, in the far-famed Piedmont region of Virgion, was erected form Goochland in 1744, and is one of the largest, richest and most populous in the State. Ity has for its boundaries on the east the counties of Fluvanna and Louisa; north, Orange and Greene; west, Nelson county and the Blue Ridge mountains which divide it from Augusta, and south, James river, which separates it from Buckingham. The lands in this county which are of a superior quality and in a high state of cultivation are watered and drained in the north by the Rivanna and South Hardware rivers and their tributaries. The Richmond and Alleghany railroad skirts its southern border, while the Chesapeake and Ohio Route travers it from east towest, and the Virginia Midland from north to south. The principal ceral productions are corn, rye, oats, wheat and tobacco. There are a number of large mills, which manufacture in great quantities and superior quality; and the cotton and wollen goods are not surpassed by those made in any other section of the United States. In the value and charater of orchard productions Albemarle is the third county in the State. The Albemarle pippin grown here has a reputation which is world wide. Grape culture is extensively carried on, the principal and most profitable varities being the Concord, Ives, Clinton, and Norton's Virginia. The minerals found in the county are gold, iron, lead, slate, limestone, sandstone, and soapstone. The timbers are oak, chestnut, walnut, locust, pine hickory, chestnut, walnut, locust, pine, hickory, poplar, maple and beech. Charlottesville, Howardsville, and Scottsville are the principle towns, but there are several other thriving villages of mercantile importance. Shadwell on the Rivanna river, is noted for having been the birthplace of Thomas Jefferson. Mr. Jefferson built here in 1806 large flouring mills, and a portion of the walls are still standing. The educational facilities are very great, for besides the University of Virginia (which will be treated in a separate sketch0, there are a large number of private schools and academies for both male and female. One of the finest institutions of the State, and where an incalculable amount of good is being done in the elevation and ennobling of labor, is the Miller Manual Labor School, found by Samuel Miller of Lynchburg, Va. Here boys are taught English, Latin, German, French mathematics, natural philosophy and chemistry, besides receiving a good industrial training in the mechanical and agricultural arts. The county has an ares of 725 1/3 square miles (464,262 acres), and the land has an average assessed value of $11.69 per acre.

Charlottesville, the county seat of Albemarle, is beautifully and healthfully situtated in the picturesque valley of the Rivanna between the Blue Ridge and Southwest Mountains, at the intersection of the Virginia Midland and Chesapeake and Ohio Railways. It is renowed for being the seat of the University of Virginia, founded in 1819, and for its close proximity to Monticello, which signifies "little mountain," the residence and burial place of Thomas Jefferson, the immortal founder of the Institutution. The University is very justly the pride of the State, and is in a very flourishing condition, its classes being always filled with the most respectable young men from all parts of the Union.
Charlottesville is 97 miles distant by rail from Richmond, 117 from Washington. The population 6,000, and the society most excellent. The bar of Charlottesville ranks high, some of the most eminent jurists in the State being located here. There are several private besides two graded public schools. There are also a large number of mercantile and manufacturing establishments, besides two banks, two hotels, two weekly newspapers, and one monthly magazine devoted to farming and the grape culture.
