Alma Pearl Umbarger, age 88, widow of George E. Umbarger, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Stephen Creger of Crockett; two sons and daughter-in- law, James H. Umbarger, and Ben F. and Jane Umbarger, all of Atkins; eight grandchildren, nine great- grandchildren, and one greatgreat-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held today, Jan. 4, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Groseclose.

Umbarger
John Milton Umbarger, age 90, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000 in Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
Mr. Umbarger was a son of the late Milton Brown and Mary Josephine Cole Umbarger, a retired farmer and a member of Mountain View United Methodist Church. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Willard Umbarger; and a sister, Virginia Eleanor Vicars.
Surviving are two sisters, Eula Mae Conner of Agaura Hills, Calif., and Anna Elizabeth Umbarger of Chilhowie; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, Jan. 7, at 2 p.m. in Williams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John H. Graham officiating. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Mountain View United Methodist Church.

Umbarger
Mae Sims Umbarger, age 84, died Saturday, May 6, 2000 in Clarksville, Tenn.
Mrs. Umbarger was born April 14, 1916 in Marion, a daughter of the late Henry and Daisy Evans Sims. She married Garland (Nap) Umbarger on Dec. 21, 1932 in Marion. The marriage was later solemnized in the Ogden L.D.S. Temple in Ogden, Utah. She was employed with Southwestern State Hospital for 12 years. In March of 1955, she moved to Ogden, Utah and was employed with McKay-Dee Hospital where she retired after 27 years.
She was a member of the American Business Womens Club and the Cosmopolitan Club.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Umbarger was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rhonda Sawyers.
Surviving are four daughters, Joan Sawyers of Marion, Charlotte Parks of Atkins, Dorris Ross of Clarksville, Tenn., and Barbara Olsen of Riverdale, Utah; one brother, Fremont Sims of Lancaster, Calif.; two sisters, Louise Hutton of Staunton, and Edith Corvin of Clarksville, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sons-in-law, William Sawyers, Marion, Roby Parks Sr., Atkins, Robert Ross, Clarksville, Tenn., and Robert Olsen, Riverdale, Utah.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, May 11, at 2 p.m. in Seaver-Brown Funeral Chapel with Robert Ross Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Rose Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 in Seaver- Brown Chapel.

Umbarger
Ethel Burnette Umbarger, age 80, of Chilhowie, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998 in the Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was a member of the Deer Valley Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, W.E. and Mary E. Burnette Umbarger and two brothers, Elmer Chapman Umbarger and Willard Marshall Umbarger.
Survivors include one sister, Dorothy Umbarger, Chilhowie; two nieces, Monnie Sue McNew of Chilhowie, and Sandra Lynn Odum, Meadowview; three great-nephews, Shane McNew, Travis Martin and Jason Odum.
Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, in Riverside Cemetery in Chilhowie with the Rev. Don Hazelwood officiating.

VIRGIE ELLEN FISHER UMBERGER, age 86, of the Huddle Community, passed away Monday, February 26, 2001 in Edgemont. She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Charles K. and Leora Collins Fisher. She was a life member of Huddle Memorial United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Andrew Umberger and a brother Clyde Fisher. She is survived by: a daughter, Donna Umberger of the Huddle Community; two sons and daughters-in-law - Charles L. and Barbara Umberger, James A. "Jimmy" and Kathleen Umberger all of the Huddle Community; two sisters - Lettie Groseclose of the Huddle Community and Ollie Kincer of Wytheville; one brother - Robert "Bob" Fisher of the Huddle Community; twelve grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren also survive.
A celebration of life service will be held Wednesday, February 28, 2001 at 8:00 p.m. at Huddle Memorial Untied Methodist Church with the Rev. Joe Carrico and the Rev. Jeff Callahan officiating. The family will receive friends at the Huddle Memorial Church Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. until service time. A graveside service will be held Thursday, March 1, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. at the Davis Cemetery. Umberger
Dorothy Repass Umberger, age 68, of Ceres, died Tuesday, July 22, 1997 in Wytheville as the result of an automobile accident.
She was a dedicated mother and active citizen of the Bland County community. She was a member of the Red Oak Church and UMW in Ceres. Mrs. Umberger was a former postmaster and employee of the U.S. Postal Service in Ceres with a total of 26 years of service and was a member of the N.A.R.F.E. She was a member of the Bland County Planning Commission, and served on the Board of Directors of the Bland County Historical Society, a member of the committee for the Festival of Leaves, and the Bland County Fair Association.
She was a master quilter and one of the founding members of the Hands All Around Quilt Club. Her quilts were displayed in Germany, Dollywood and published in national quilt books. She was recognized for her masterful quilt work with numerous awards.
Mrs. Umberger was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Leslie Umberger.
She is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Kathy and Lynn Bowlin of Atkins, and Lisa Umberger of Seattle, Wash.; one son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Deborah Umberger of Wytheville; one sister, Ola White, Sweetwater, Tenn.; five grandchildren: Cy, Ari, Staci, Valerie and Evan.
Funeral services will be held today, July 26, at 11 a.m. at the Red Oak Church with Pastor Joe Shumate, the Rev. Bill Schoeneman and Suzie Schadle (minister in training and friend of the family) officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service. ELIZABETH KATHERINE UMBERGER, age 90, of Wytheville, Virginia, died Monday November 27, 2000, in the Grace health Care Center in Abingdon, Virginia. She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Ernest N. and Alice Poston Umberger who were the owners of E.N. Umbergers "Skeeters". She was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church and the Wytheville Rebekah Lodge # 57. She is survived by: three nieces - Sharon Atkinson of Richmond, VA, Nancy Stanulis of Marion, VA and Susan Wade of Lexington, VA; and a sister-in-law - Toby Umberger of Wytheville, VA.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 30, 2000, at 1:00 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Dr. Donald E. Stansell officiating. JUNE HAMPTON UMBERGER, age 81 of Wytheville, Virginia, died early Sunday, January 27, 2001 in the Wythe County Community Hospital. she was born in Bluefield, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Robert Kyle & Estalla Udy Hampton. She was a member of the Hold Trinity Lutheran Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Garfield Umberger, Jr. She is survived by: two daughters and sons-in-law - Ann and Sonny Silvers of Vinton, VA and Tess and Buddy Unberger of Forest, VA; a son and daughter-in-law - Gary and Diane Umberger of Wytheville; two sisters - Leona Wyatt of Atlanta, GA and Alma Baumgardner of Richmond, VA; six grandchildren - Jeffrey Umberger, Karen Silvers, Amy Skaff, Andy Silvers, Chip Umberger and Chreyl Alderman; seven great-grandchildren - Sydney Umberger, Logan Skaff, Chelsea Umberger, Haley Alderman, Joshua Alderman, Allison Alderman and Jacob Peyton Umberger; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Leroy Clifford Van Wyk, 78, was remembered at a memorial service held Aug. 25 at the First Presbyterian Church in Fernandina Beach, Fla. Burial followed at Ashelawn Memorial Gardens in Jefferson.
Mr. Van Wyk was a native of Clifton, N.J. and served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a professional surveyor in the New England area and retired from his engineering and surveying firm to move to Miami, Fla. Retirement was short lived and he co-founded another firm of engineers, planners and surveyors, Metric Engineering, in Miami, Fla. Following a second retirement, he moved to Grassy Creek.
He is survived by his wife, Iris Lea Van Wyk; two sons, Harold, Fleetwood, and Roy, Miami, Fla.; a daughter, Lois Van Wyk, Gainesville, Fla.; three step-daughters, Cynthia Covil, Shallotte, Carolyn Keziah, Monroe, and Lori Griffin, Savannah, Ga.; and several grandchildren and step-grandchildren.

Mr. Robert Bruce Van Hoy, age 95, of 2511 Walnut Branch Church Rd., Sparta, N.C., died Sunday, July 4, 1999, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law: Mary Ruth and Tom Cook of Sparta; and a granddaughter: Janie Cook of Sparta. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with burial in the Mt. Zion Cemetery. Richard Russell (Russ) Vance, age 35, died Friday, Oct. 10, 1997 in Wilmington, N.C.
Survivors include his wife, Janet Sawyers Vance; three daughters, Kasey Vance, Holly Vance and Mandy Vance, all of the home; his parents, Sonny and Brenda Vance, Chilhowie; one brother, Steve Vance, Chilhowie; two sisters, Tammy V. Andrew Daniel VanHoy, age 72, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. VanHoy was born in Raven and had lived in Toledo, Ohio for several years. He lived in Marion for the past 14 years. He retired from Buck Eye Cablevision in Toledo and was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean Conflict.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Newbirt VanHoy; his parents, George and Olie Denison VanHoy; a brother, Carl VanHoy; and a sister Tiny VanHoy.
Survivors include one daughter, Brenda Borton, Holland, Ohio; two brothers, Patrick VanHoy of Marion, and Robert VanHoy, Lenoir, N.C.; five grandchildren, Lemual Borton, Richard Daniel Borton, Kevin Borton, Brittany Borton, and Hannah Marie Borton; one great-grandchild, Lindsay Borton; several nieces and nephews.
At the request of Mr. VanHoy his body was donated to medical science.

Kermit R. "Dick" VanHuss, age 52, of Damascus, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, was employed by Mike Wills as a milk hauler, and was a lifelong farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Louise VanHuss; two sons, Will VanHuss, Damascus, and Jay VanHuss, Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters, JoAnn Smith, Abingdon, Shirley Neely, Damascus, and Lenna McCall, Meadowview; one grandson, William VanHuss; several nieces and nephews.

Della Gray Vannoy, age 85, of Glade Spring, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 1998 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. She was a lifelong resident of Glade Spring, was a Baptist and was the widow of the Rev. John F. Vannoy. She was also preceded in death by a son, Billy Vannoy.
Survivors include seven daughters: Robert (Berbie) Vannoy and Sue Ann Peters, both of Glade Spring, Rebecca (Becky) Dunn, Abingdon, Louise Thomas, Chilhowie, Mary Dunn, Falls Church, Betty McKaughan, Joppa, Md., and Etta Havens, Indiana; five sons: Frank Vannoy, John Vannoy Jr., James E. (Jim) Vannoy, all of Glade Spring, Jack Vannoy, Abingdon, and George Vannoy, Chilhowie; 43 grandchildren; 69 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Franklin L. Vannoy Sr., age 63, of Glade Spring, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mr. Vannoy was a lifelong resident of Washington County, a son of the late Rev. John F. and Della Vannoy, and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. He was also preceded in death by a brother, William G. Vannoy; and a grandson, Zachary L. Vannoy.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Vannoy; two daughters, Mrs. Jake (Della) Stillwell of Glade Spring, and Mrs. Mark (Mary Jane) Cardin of Dalton, Ga.; three sons, Pete Vannoy and Curtis Vannoy, both of Glade Spring, and Robert "Bobby" Vannoy of Frankfort, Ky.; four brothers, John Vannoy Jr., and James E. Julia Worthington Vaughan, age 82, of Lynchburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998. She was the widow of Charles Edward Vaughan.
Mrs. Vaughan was born Feb. 16, 1915 in Lynchburg to the late Herbert Hope Worthington and Mary Hippert Tyree. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.
She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Carolyn and Steve Wilson of Lynchburg, Julie and Duncan McGregor of Marion, and Mary Ellen Burch of Albuquerque, N. Mex.; one sister, Mary Anne Sprouse of Lynchburg; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Vaughan
Charles M. Vaughan Jr., age 81, of Wytheville, and formerly of Rural Retreat, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999 in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Mr. Vaughan was born in Spring Valley community of Grayson County, was a 1941 graduate of Virginia Tech, and a World War II Army Air Corp veteran. He was a lifelong educator teaching agriculture in Dickenson and Giles County before moving to Rural Retreat in 1949. He received both state and national recognition for his work including the honorary National FFA award. He opened and served as the administrator of the Wythe County Vocational School from 1968 to 1980 and served as president of the Virginia Vocational Education Association. Mr. Vaughan was an active community leader, serving for many years on the Rural Retreat Town Council, the Rural Retreat Fair Association, the Smyth County Community Hospital Board, the Wythe County Industrial Development Authority, and the Rural Retreat Lions Club. He also was a devoted member of the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church and taught the Wesley Fellowship Class for more than 30 years.
He is survived by his wife, Frances M. Vaughan, Wytheville; two daughters and son-in-law, Carol and Steve Dagwell, Salem, and Rosamond Vaughan of Issaquah, Wash.; one grandson, Michael Papadales, Issaquah, Wash.; one niece, Charlotte Philen, Galax; one sister-in-law, Jennie-June Vaughan, Spring Valley; one foster sister, Hassie Leo of Silver Spring, Md.
Graveside services were held Sunday, Oct. 10, at 2 p.m. at the Mountain View Cemetery in Rural Retreat. A memorial service followed at 3 p.m. at the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Countiss and the Rev. George Jones officiating. John Vaughn, age 87, of 441 Vaughn Rd. Ennice, N.C., died Wednesday Morning, January 3, 2001, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by his wife: Thelma Greene Vaughn of the home; one son and daughter-in-law: Nelson and Brenda Vaughn of Ennice, N.C.; three daughters and sons-in-law: Judy and Harold Baldwin, Gaye and Guy Galyean and Barbara and William McGrady, all of Ennice, N.C.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother: Paul Vaughan of Ennice, NC; and three sisters: Hazel Cleary and Hattie Bedsaul, both of Ennice, N.C. and Cleo Swicegood of Welcome, N.C. Vaught
Carl F. Vaught, age 86, died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000 in Marion.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Wagner Vaught; one brother, Robert Vaught and one sister, Ann Stewart.
Mr. Vaught was a member of the Royal Oak Presbyterian Church and was a community leader.
His community activities included many years as a member of Marion Town Council, going from 1962 to 1974, and as a member of the town planning commission, from 1976 to 1995. He helped in the development of the town zoning ordinance. He was also very active for years as Smyth County chairman for the Salvation Army.
Vaught made his living running grocery stores in downtown Marion. One of his stores was located where Royal Oak Realty stands now. Another of his stores was called Park and Shop, located where Food Country stands now. Vaught still owned Food Country and a warehouse behind it at the time of his death. The Salvation Army used the warehouse to store furniture and other goods to help people in times of need.
He is survived by one sister, Nina Wilson of Abingdon; one brother, John Vaught of Bristol. A host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today, Dec. 23, at 2 p.m. at Royal Oak Presbyterian Church with Rev. Alan Gray officiating. Entombment will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1-2 p.m. at Royal Oak Presbyterian Church.

Fred Brown Vaught, age 93, of Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998 in the Francis Marion Manor.
He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late George and Mazie Horne Vaught. Mr. Vaught was a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church in Rural Retreat and was preceded in death by three brothers: Willis Vaught, Walker Vaught and Lee Vaught; and one sister, Marietta Keesling.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Emma Bowers Vaught; two sisters-in-law, Canna Litz, Rural Retreat, and Thelma Ratcliffe, New Market; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rance Edwards officiating. Interment followed in the Mountain View Cemetery in Rural Retreat. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Billy Wayne Venable, age 65, of Saltville, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Survivors include one sister, Elma Wix, Chilhowie; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were conducted at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Venezula
Ruth Thompson Venezuela, 88, died Friday, March 9, 2001, at Well Spring Retirement Community in Greensboro, NC. Visitation will be from 11:00-11:30 Saturday, March 17, 2001 at Grandview Funeral Home and the graveside service immediately following at Sparta Cemetery in Sparta, North Carolina. Ruth was born in Sparta, North Carolina on July 23, 1912, the daughter of Robert V. and Metta Joines Thompson. She had two brothers, Jack and Dan. She graduated from Glade Valley High School and attended Salem College in Winston-Salem, Appalachian University in Boone, and the Strayers Business College in Washington, D.C. for night school. Ruth married Robert Landreth, also an Alleghany County native and a graduate of Glade Valley High School. The young couple moved to Washington, D.C. when Robert was hired to work for Congressman R. L. Doughton. During the War years, Ruth accepted an important job as executive secretary and personal assistant to one of the Directors of the Inter-American Defense Board. During these years, she continued night school studying foreign languages and became fluent in Spanish, Portuguese and French. Years later, she mastered Turkish as well. During this period of employment, she received several letters of commendation for her outstanding performance. Shortly after the war, Ruth was widowed when her husband was killed in an industrial accident in Fredricksburg, Va. She became interested in investing her limited savings in the stock market and resigned from the Inter-American Defense Board for a position on Wall Street with Dean Witter. There she learned about the stock market first hand. She was always a keen student and soon became an astute investor, continuing to make conservative investments until the last years of her life. After two years on Wall Street, her desire to travel brought her back to Washington for the State Department. Her skills and abilities earned her many overseas assignments. During the years to follow, she was assigned tours of duty in Yugoslavia, Ghana, Belgium Congo, Turkey and Afghanistan. She was assigned short duties in most European countries and the Mid East. Where there was international trouble, there was Ruth, helping her country in many operations. After the years in Foreign Service satisfied her desire for travel, she took a job with the Department of Commerce and later with the IRS so she could stay in Washington. During this time, she married Juan S. Venezuela whom she had known in Afghanistan. Mr. Venezuela died in October 1985. Although she was a world traveler, she always looked forward to returning to North Carolina and Alleghany County to visit family and friends. She left the Washington area to live in an Elkin, NC retirement home and later moved again to Greensboro to be closer to family. Ruth is survived by her brother, Dan of Laurel, Ms.; Nieces, Carol Combs of Oak Ridge, NC, Susan Nunley of Elizabethtown, Ky., Dawn Thompson of Maitland, Fl; Nephew, Bob Thompson of Anchorage, AK; Three great- nieces, one great-nephew and one great-great-niece. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Ruth are asked to make a donation to the charity of their choice.

Kathleen Anderson Verlander, age 81, died Feb. 27, 2000 in Houston, Texas.
Mrs. Verlander was a former resident of Marion where her three sons were born and raised.
She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Lewis and Jimmie Verlander, Jim and June Verlander, and Joe and Judy Verlander; six grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Sherwood Anderson, Otho Anderson and Arthur Anderson; one sister, Dorothy McDaniels; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 29, at 2 p.m. in Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Lipps officiating. Interment was in Woodlawn Garden of Memories. Glenna Pugh Vernon, age 83, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Vernon was born Oct. 19, 1913 in Grayson County. She attended Johnston Memorial Nursing School and graduated in 1935. She served the public as a registered nurse for 46 years. She was the widow of C.H. Vernon.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Sam and Gail Vernon of Marion; one brother, B. Jack Pugh, Lynchburg; two grandsons, David and Neal; one granddaughter, Anna; one step-grandchild, Chad.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 2 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Carol Ferguson officiating. Interment followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery. The family requests that flowers be omitted and donations made to the Marion Life Saving Crew or the Laurel Springs Church.

MINA SUE PORTER VIARS, 65 of Major Graham Road, Max Meadows, Virginia died Tuesday, September 12, 2000 at her residence. She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Harold B. and Maw Sharp Porter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Junior Marzell Viars and two brothers, H.B. Porter, Jr. and Ernest S. Porter. She is survived by: 2 daughters and sons-in-law - Connie and Gary Arnold, Rt 3, Wytheville; Mitsy and Robbie Surratt, Max Meadows; two sons and daughter-in-law - Donald and Debbie Viars, Wytheville; Gary Lee "Peck" Viars, Max Meadows; five grandchildren - Amanda Viars, Gary Arnold, Jr., Ernest Viars, Justin Arnold, Kelsey Viars; one great-granddaughter Makynzee Viars; a god-daughter - Belvia Nester, Hillsville; six sisters - Robertha Sumer, Virginia Sizemore, Shirley Sumner (all of Woodlawn), Joan Sparks of Roanoke, Etta Mae Mannine of Bedford and Vera Jean Horton of Austinville, Virginia. 3 brothers - Alvin Porter, J.D. PHILLIP WAYNE VIARS, age 32 of Max Meadows, Virginia, died Friday, November 17, 2000 in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital from injuries received in an automobile accident. He is survived by: his parents - Charles E. and Charlotte Moore Viars of Max Meadows; special son - Joseph McGlothlin; sister and brother-in-law - Joan and Danny Lawson of Max Meaodws, VA; brother and sister-in-law - Charles E., Jr., and Patricia C. Viars all of Max Meadows, VA; three nieces - Sheena and Kendra Viars and Bailey Lawson; one nephews - Adam Lawson; paternal grandmother -Margie Viars of Max Meadows, VA; several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.

Frank Vickers, age 81, died Saturday, March 20, 1999 at his home on Claytor Lake in Draper following a long illness.
Mr. Vickers was born Jan. 17, 1918 in Lockport, N.Y., the first son of Greek immigrants, the late Steve and Mary Rapanakis Vickers. He attended schools in Gary, W.Va., and furthered his education through the University of Maryland. He was also a graduate of the Lewis Hotel Training School in Washington D.C.
Upon enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1936, he received special training in a wide variety of special courses enabling him to have a diverse background in management. He retired with distinction and honors as Chief Warrant Officer in 1966 after a 30-year career with the U.S. Army serving in Panama, Thule, Greenland, Hawaii, Japan, Italy and ending with his last assignment as advisor to the West Virginia National Guard in Charleston, W.Va.
In 1966, he was named manager of Heart O' Town Motor Inn (now the Charleston House) and later became managing director at both these and at the Weirton, W.Va., Heart O' Town Motor Inn as well. He was invited to manage the Charleston law firm of Preiser and Wilson and stayed with them for eight years.
Mr. Vickers and his family were former residents of Charleston, W.Va., prior to moving to Bluefield in 1969. Upon moving to Bluefield, he was invited to become executive director of Fincastle Country Club after having been a member for many years. He has been a member of the American Academy of Legal Assistants and belonged to several civic, social and professional associations including the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, Knights of Columbus, Lions Clubs, The Retired Officers Association, both in Charleston, W.Va., and Roanoke, and a member of AARP.
Formerly a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bluefield, W.Va., he was a member of St. Edwards Catholic Church in Pulaski.
Mr. Vickers was preceded in death by a brother, Sam Vickers; and a grandson, Jason Rooker.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Mary (Angelelli) Vickers of Draper; a brother, Mike Vickers of Cleveland, Ohio; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Frances and Daniel Gregory Rooker of Radford, Valerie Ann and Curtis Randal Hostetler of Glen Allen, and Shirley Katherine and Steven Patrick Conley of Midlothian; seven grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
A prayer service was held Tuesday, March 23, at 8 p.m. at the Stevens Funeral Home in Pulaski.
The mass of resurrection will be celebrated today, March 24, at 11 a.m. from the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bluefield, W.Va., with Father Patsy Iaquinta officiating. Entombment will follow at the Woodlawn Cemetery Mausoleum, Bluewell, W.Va., with Bluefield VFW Post 9696 and American Legion Post 14 Pocahontas conducting the military graveside rites. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time today at the church.

Bill Albert Viers, 79, of Bristol Nursing Home, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 1997.
He was an Army veteran.

Paul Jack Vineyard, 72, was remembered at funeral services held April 2 at Forest Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel in Lexington. Rev. Tommy Dollar officiated. Masonic rites were presented by Lodge 473 and Lodge 696. Entombment followed in Forest Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Mr. Vineyard, a native of Maryland, was born to Richard and Stella Dollar Vineyard. He was retired from North Carolina Carpenter''s Local Union as a business agent. He served in World War II in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Ashe County Masonic Lodge #594. He was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma P. Vineyard, Lexington; five daughters, Sharon Kist, Florida, Kathy Honaker and Jeannie Kist, both of Delaware, and Jackie Barben, Maryland; and Cathey Moheisen, Lexington; one son, Harold Lewis, Lansing; two sisters, Hazel Eldreth, Pennsylvania, and Shelby Elliot, West Jefferson; one brother, John Vineyard, West Jefferson; and 13 grandchildren.

Anna Blanche Vipperman, age 67, of Wytheville died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997, at Wythe County Community Hospital.
A daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Vipperman and Eva Mary Schneider Vipperman, she was born in Smyth County. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Agnes Sluder, Fern Louise Vipperman and Crystal Marie Vipperman.
She is survived by four sisters, Luella Authenrieth, Rural Retreat, Virgie Whitley, Havre De Grace, Md., and Ruby Cook and Myrtle Zellman, both of Bel Aire, Md.; two brothers, Louis Vipperman, Rural Retreat, and William Clarence Vipperman, Dalzell, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Louis Andrew Vipperman, age 72, of Rural Retreat, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998 in the Baptist Hospital, Winston- Salem, N.C.
Mr. Vipperman was born in Atkins, the son of the late Andrew Jackson and Eva Mary Schneider Vipperman. He attended the Mt. View Church of God in Saltville, was a veteran of the U.S. Army, World War II, and was an honorary member of the Rural Retreat Volunteer Fire Dept.
He is survived by his wife, Rachel Overbay Vipperman of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Eva Vipperman, Rural Retreat; two grandchildren, Mary Ann Vipperman of Rural Retreat, and Pvt.
