Mr. Quessenberry was born in Floyd County, Va. to Pecry and Ola Quessenberry. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Reeves Quessenberry. He was a member of the West Jefferson United Methodist Church. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1934 and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He served in the U.S. Army as a captain in infantry, he was a World War II veteran where he served in Germany, Italy and France. He worked for the Surry County, N.C. Public School System as a teacher. During the 1940s, Mr. Quessenberry served as the Ashe County, N.C. Agricultural Extension Agent. During the 1950s, he served as a livestock specialist in Raleigh with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture until his retirement in 1976.
He is survived by his son, Frank Quessenberry, West Jefferson; three daughters, Barbara Derman, East Lansing, Mich., Betsy Griffin, Joplin, Mo., and Marion Hinson, Marshville; and five grandchildren.

Carrie S. Quesenberry, 93, of Hillsville, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Heritage Hall, Laurel Meadows Home.
Survivors include two sons, Mason Quesenberry and Frank Lee Quesenberry, both of Hillsville; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held Monday at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home with burial in the Liberty Hill Cemetery. Dr. James DeBoe officiated.

Lena L. "Cindy" Quesenberry, age 32, of Meadowview, died Friday, July 4, 1997 from injuries received in an automobile accident.
She was a native of Smyth County and had lived all her life in Washington County. She was employed by Bristol Compressors for 10 years.
Survivors include her husband, Benjamin Franklin "Frankie" Quesenberry II; her parents, Tommy and Mary O'Quinn, Abingdon; one brother, Tommy O'Quinn Jr., Meadowview; one sister, Vicky Ann Edwards, Meadowview; her maternal grandmother, Evelyn Herndon, Saltville.
Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, July 7, in Sunset Memorial Park with the Rev. Don Lasley officiating.

Quesenberry
Callie Tilson Quesenberry, age 79, died Friday, July 8, 2000 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. She was the widow of Cyril Quesenberry.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, James Clinton and Margaret E. Tilson of Baltimore, Md., and Clifford and Brenda G. Parsons Sr., of Independence; two sisters, Mattie Stoots Parsons of Marion, and Sadie Daily of West Point, Ky.; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; one special niece, Annie M. Osborne; a special friend, Joyce D. Stanger.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, July 10, at 11 a.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Owens officiating. Burial followed in Roland Creek Cemetery.

Linnie Quesinberry, 89, of Hillsville, died Monday, March 12, 2001, at Eldercare of Hillsville.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Carroll and Daniel Spence of Hillsville; a son, Lee Quesinberry of Hillsville; one grandson; one graet-grandson; a stepdaughter, Arleta McGrady of Ashboro, N.C.; a sister and brother-in-law, Bertha and Harry Mabe of Austinville; five stepgrandchilden; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held Thursday at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home with burial in the Isaac Quesinberry Cemetery. The Rev. Russell Payne officiated.
Rabara
Mae Donnia Rabara, age 78, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 1997 at her home in Chilhowie.
She was a native of Pikeville, Ky., and worked as a nurse at the Smyth County Community Hospital for over 17 years.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Marion.
Survivors include five daughters, Shirley A. Ferguson and Kathy R. Worley, both of Chilhowie, Julia D. Guthrie, Spring, Texas, E. Carole Graham, and Geraldine Rabara, both of Marion; two sons, Edward Robert Rabara, Nanuet, N.Y., and Antino Alan Rabara, Chilhowie; 12 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held today, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m. in the Church of Jesus of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Watermill Road in Marion with President Steve Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

Opal S. Radar, age 73, died Thursday, March 23, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Survivors include one sister, Mary Emma Browning, Richmond; several nieces and nephews.

Rafferty
Martha Sprinkle Rafferty, age 90, died April 25, 2000 in Williamsburg.
Mrs. Rafferty was born in Marion on Sept. 8, 1909 the daughter and last surviving child of Belle Hampton Painter and Dr. Onyx Curwen Sprinkle. Her father was a druggist and lifelong resident of Marion. She attended Marion College and was a graduate of Agnes Scott College.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. James Gallman (Sara Bell), and two brothers, Sydney Crockett Sprinkle and Dr. William McCollum Sprinkle, both of Marion, and by two sisters, Mrs. John Archer Carter (Evelyn) and Mrs. Robert T. Allen (Mary).
Surviving are her husband, Philip Rafferty; one daughter, Mrs. James Connolly (Mary) of Pittsfield, Maine; one son, John Philip Rafferty of New York City; 11 grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Irma C. Sprinkle of Marion; several nieces and nephews.
A private interment was held Thursday, April 27, at Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg.
Rambo
Linda Rouse Rambo, age 57, of Groseclose, died Monday, June 14, 1999 in Smyth County Community Hospital from injuries received in an automobile accident.
Mrs. Rambo was a member of the Middle Fork Baptist Church and was a retired social worker from Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute.
She is survived by her husband, H. Jack Rambo of Groseclose; one son and daughter-in-law, James A. and Angie R. Rambo of Groseclose; three daughters, Amy L. Rambo of Wytheville, Melanie L. Rambo and Cristy A. Rambo, both of Groseclose; four grandchildren: Austin J. Rambo, Michael A. Rambo, Justin H. Rambo and Carrie Marie Mohr; her parents, Elmer and Marie Rouse of Seven Mile Ford; her mother-in-law, Ida Gay Rambo of Groseclose; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Jeanette R. and Rodney Russell of Chilhowie, Emily R. and Mark Draper of Bristol, Doris R. and Mike Blevins, and Nancy R. and George Palmer, all of Seven Mile Ford; one sister-in-law, Hazel R. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 17, at 11 a.m. at the Middle Fork Baptist Church in Chilhowie with the Rev. Jerry Creasy and the Rev. Neal Hawks officiating. Kate Rosenbalm Ramsey, age 85, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

John Gary Randall, age 59, of Sugar Grove, died Monday, July 24, 2000 in Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax.
He is survived by one brother, Albert S. Randall of Gambrills, Md.; one niece; one nephew; several cousins including Christina and Donald Mattingly of Sugar Grove with whom he made his home.

She was born in Wythe County, Va., a daughter of the late John and Nancy Kemp Rankin.

Algie Belcher Ratliff, age 84, widow of Theodore "Ted" Ratliff, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997 in Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy. She was a native and lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of Grundy Baptist Church, and was a homemaker. She was a graduate of Grundy High School and attended State Teachers College in Farmville. She was a member of Eastern Star in Grundy, a member of Grundy Women's Club and the Nimble Thimble Quilt Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Oliver and Mary Jane Looney Belcher; one son, James Theodore Ratliff; and one sister, Eula Belcher Blas.
She is survived by one sister, Mavis Belcher Asbury of South Daytona, Fla.; two brothers, Vernon Belcher of Grundy and Ersel Belcher of Maxie; one grandson, Kristopher Stewart Ratliff of Marion; three great- grandchildren, Kristopher Clark Ratliff, Addison Stewart Ratliff and Bailey Catherine Ratliff, all of Marion.

Mr. Reedy was born Dec. 22, 1919 at Konnarock, the son of Isaac and Bertie Blevins Reedy. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army.

Mrs. Reedy was a native of Smyth County where she lived most of her life. She worked at the Southwestern State Hospital in Marion as a young woman.
Mrs. Reedy was a member of the Groseclose First Church of God.

James Arthur Reedy
Rev. J. A. Reedy died June 11, 1912,at his home at Attoway, Va. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. C.T. Rouse at the Falling Water Baptist church, after which his remains were conveyed to the church burying ground by the Odd Fellows, of which he was an honored member. He was also a member of the Modern Woodmen.
Brother Reedy was an earnest Christian and provided for his family well, despite the fact that he was cripple from childhood. He was a member of the Falling Water Baptist church for several years, during which time he entered the ministry and was very successful in his work.
Brother Reedy was thirty-eight five months and four days old, and leaves a wife and three children, an aged mother and several brothers to mourn their loss.

William H. Sizemore, 79, or Conowingo died on Monday, May 9, at North Charles General Hospital, in Baltimore. He was the husband of the late Caroline P. (Workman) Sizemore.
Mr. Sizemore was born in White Sulphur Springs, W. VA., a son of the late William H. and Lucy (Reynolds) Sizemore. He was a retired superintendent of Susquehanna State Park.
He is survived by three children, Flossie S. Songer of Charlestown, W.VA., Harold H. Sizemore of Tucson, Ariz., and William A. Sizemore of Reisterstown, MD; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and eight brothers and sisters.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, may 14 at the Harkins Funeral Home, Inc, Delta, PA. Rev. Larry Summers officiated. Interment was in Bel Air Memorial Gardens.

Funeral services for Howard Franklin Reedy, Sr.60,carpenter,who died at his home here Thursday afternoon at 3:30 after an illness of three months were conducted from Broad Street Methodist Church Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev. R. L. Haga, pastor and Rev. B.H. Phaup, pastor of the Wesleyan Methodist Church. Interment was in Greenhill Cemetery.
Born at Rugby, Feb. 7,1881, Mr. Reedy was a son of J. M. Reedy and was reared at Camp, Smyth County. He had been a resident of Altavista for 21 years. He was a member of Broad Street Methodist Church.
On Jan. 5,1900 he was married to Miss Maude Lee Wyrick who survives with the following children: Mrs. C.S Pugh, Mrs. J.B. Driskill, Mrs. J.P. Henderson, Mrs. W.R. Short, Miss Pauline Reedy and H.F. Reedy,Jr. all of Altavista. Two sisters, Mrs. J. W. Fulton of Rural Retreat and Mrs. Annie Stone of Greesnboro, N C. also survive.

Benjamin Everette "Buster" Reeves, 75, was remembered at funeral services held April 30 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Lonnie Jones of Welcome Home Baptist Church officiated. Burial followed in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens in Jefferson.
Mr. Reeves was born in Ashe County to William Everette and Sophina McMillan Reeves. He was a retired farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Flo Howell Reeves; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy D. Reeves and wife, Andrea B. Reeves, West Jefferson, and Michael R. Reeves and wife, Amy M. Clair Alice Reeves, age 89, widow of Goye Emerson Reeves, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Reeves was also preceded in death by a son, Willard Ralph Reeves.

Russell Homer Reid, age 74, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998 at his home in Chilhowie.
He was a native of Laurel Bloomery, Tenn., and had lived in Chilhowie for the past 40 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Noah Henley and Ida Fritts Reid; two brothers, Frank Reid and Fred Reid.
He was the owner and operator of Reid's Store, a retired farmer and a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church, Chilhowie.
Survivors include his wife, Julia "Judy" Reid; two sons and daughters-in-law, James R. "Jim" and Pat Reid, Chilhowie, and William H. and Mary Reid, Stuarts Draft; one brother and sister-in-law, Heird and Hazel Reid, Mountain City, Tenn.; one granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Lisa and Kenny Kock; two nephews and four nieces.

Lucy Jane Reid, age 65, of Clarksville, Tenn., died Saturday, June 5, 1999 in General Care Nursing Home.
Mrs. Reid was born Oct. 2, 1933 in Saltville, the daughter of the late James and Bessie Mae Hayden Crusenberry. She was a retired ward clerk.
Surviving are two daughters, Robin Reid of Clarksville, Tenn., and Tina Reid of Buffalo, N.Y.; one brother, George Crusenberry of Saltville; two sisters, Liz Russell of Marion, and Myrtle Osborne of Saltville; two grandchildren.
No services are planned. The remains were cremated.

He was born in Wythe County, February 26, 1928, the son of the late James R. and Myrtle Felty Repass. He was a retired mail carrier fot he Wytheville U.S. Postal Service, a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church and a member of the Wythe County Historical Society. Mr. Repass was preceded in death by a son, James A. "Jimmy" Pepass. He is survived by his wife Thelma Hackler Repass of the home; a daughter Virginia R. "Ginny" Mahaffey of Wytheville; a granddaughter Erin E. McHaffey of Wytheville; a daughter-in-law Deborah C. Repass of Wytheville. Numerous special friends and neighbors also survive.

Mrs. Repass was born in Ceres, a daughter of the late James Wriley and Dora Umbarger Bruce. She was a lifelong resident of Bland County, a member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Ceres, and a member of the Virginia Homemakers Association.
She was the widow of Roy F. Repass and Roger A. Repass. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Claude and Joubert Bruce.

Dennis E. Rhea, age 47, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998 in Oklahoma City Veteran''s Hospital in Oklahoma.
Mr. Rhea was a native of Saltville and had been a resident of Seiling, Okla., for the past year. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War having served in the United States Marine Corp. He was preceded in death by his mother, Evelyn Sue Rhea.

Franklin Rhoten, age 66, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Rhoten was a native of Russell County and had lived most of his life in Smyth County. He retired from Brunswick Defense Corp. with over 22 years of service and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He coached Little League football and men and women softball for 14 years and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Mrs. Rich was the widow of William B. Rich. She lived most of her life in Smyth County and had been living at the Birdmont Manor in Wytheville for the past two years. She was preceded in death by one son, Clarence R. Rich and an infant daughter.
She was a member of the Valley View Baptist Church and worked as a homemaker for most of her life.

Harold Milton Richardson, age 82, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 1997 in Roswell, Ga. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia DeBord Richardson.
Mr. Richardson was a long time member of the Ebenezer Lutheran Church. He retired from Brunswick Corporation where he had worked for almost 30 years. After his retirement from Brunswick, he served as custodian for the Smyth-Bland Regional Library.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Bryan Powell of Atlanta, Ga.; one son, Melvin H. Richardson of Atlanta, Ga.; one sister, Virginia Walterrick of Vienna; one granddaughter, Emily V. Powell of Atlanta, Ga.; one sister-in-law, Katherine Williams of Atkins.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, at 11 a.m. at the Ebenezer Lutheran Church with Pastor James H. Bangle officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. Randal Lynn Richardson, age 53, of Bland, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999, in the Kegley Manor Nursing Home in Bastian.
Mr. Richardson was a tire salesman for the Itco Tire Company in Wytheville and had served in the U.S. Army Reserves.
He is survived by two daughters, Donna L. Moore of Bland, and Kathryn Elizabeth Crouse of Rural Retreat; his mother, Elizabeth Puckett Richardson of Bastian; his father, Randal F. Gerald F. Richardson, age 70, of Damascus, died Friday, Dec. 22, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mr. Richardson was a lifelong resident of Damascus and was the son of the late John Franklin and Callie Hester Williams Richardson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, retired from Burlington Mills Factory and was a member of the First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.
He is survived by his wife, Mary S. Richardson; one daughter, Sandra Lee Richardson, Damascus; four sisters, Sally Blevins, Mabel Moser, Christine Bolling, all of Damascus, and Addie Toler of Morganton, N.C.; several nieces and nephews.

Mary Campbell Cook Richardson, age 79, of Greenville, Del., died Monday, March 3, 1997 at her home.
She was born in Marion on Jan. 12, 1918 to the late George F. and Elsie Campbell Cook. She attended Marion Junior College and Hollands College. She was involved in community and church activities having been a deacon and trustee at Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Church. She was an active member of Chapter E of the PEO Sisterhood.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Graham M. Richardson; three daughters, Janet C. Sky of Lewisville, Texas, Elizabeth R. Troutman of York, Penn., and Mary G. Richardson of Gwynedd Valley, Penn.; four grandchildren.

Herschel P. Richardson Sr., age 85, died Monday, Nov. 29, 1999 at his home in Sugar Grove.
Mr. Richardson was born in Alleghany County, N.C., the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Artie Richardson. He was a prominent Smyth County farmer and helped organize the Tri-State Dairy Organization and received many farming awards.
In his younger years, Mr. Richardson served the county as an assistant agriculture agent and attended Emory & Henry College. He was a great benefactor of the Sugar Grove Baptist Church and many other community organizations.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Eller Richardson, and one sister, Ola R. Lyons.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Page and Bob Coulthard of Sugar Grove; one son and daughter-in- law, Preston (Pete) and Audrey Richardson, Sugar Grove; one sister, Ora R. Goetzinger of Sugar Grove; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Zenna Anderson Richmond, age 96, of Salem, formerly of Marion, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999 in the Brandon Oaks Nursing Home in Roanoke.
Mrs. Richmond was a native of Grayson County and was a member of the Troutdale Primitive Baptist Church. She was retired from the Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute.

Mrs. Rickey was born July 1, 1923 in Cripple Creek, Virginia, a daughter of the late William Alexander Porter and Iora Crockett Porter. She was a member of Park Road Baptist Church in Charlotte and worked with her husband for many years in their business Rickey Office Equipment, Inc. until their retirement.
Survivors include her husband, Kermit R. Rickey; her daughter Sharon Rickey Gudenbery and husband Harry, of Palm Coast FL; and two grandchildren, Lori Miller and husband, Alan, of Landenberg, PA, and Bruce Gudenberg of Arlington, VA. Mr. Rickey was born January 20, 1922 in Max Meadows, Virginia, a son of the late Manassas Hall Rickey and Celia Mann Rickey. Peggy Jane Crabtree Riddle, age 65, of Wytheville, died Saturday, March 20, 1999 in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
She was a native of Bland County and a member of the Sharon Lutheran Church. She was retired from Eli Lilly in Roanoke and was most currently serving as pianist for the Lebanon Lutheran Church in Wytheville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Paul and Nancy Gibson Crabtree of Ceres.

She was a native of Smyth County but had lived most of her life in Washington County. She was a member of Trigg Street Church of God and was the widow of Ernest Riffey.
Survivors include three sons, Paul Riffey, Damascus, Bill Riffey and Allen Riffey, both of Abingdon; seven daughters, Josie Riffey and Sharon Thomas, both of Abingdon, Charlotte R. She was a member of the Locust Hill United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Melvin Riggins; one son, Robert Riggins; two brothers, Robert and Joseph Burcham; and one sister, Dot Quesenberry.

Mrs. Ruby Gertrude Mahala Riley, age 86, of the Ashe Living Center in Jefferson died Saturday, Feb. 17 at the Ashe Living Center.

Mrs. Riley was born in Ashe County, on July 30, 1914 to the late Thomas Robert and Nora Allen Mahala. She was a homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Riley; two brothers, Edgar Mahala and Moton Mahala; and two sisters Amalee Pope and Encie Mahala.
She is survived by one sister, Vergie Mahala of Creston; one brother, Leonard Mahala of Jefferson; and several nieces and nephews.

William A. "Bill" Riley, age 77, died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999 at his home in Glade Spring.
Mr. Riley was a native of Tazewell, had lived in Washington County most of his life and was of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include his wife, Lorraine Riley; four daughters, Shirley Hamm of Abingdon, Betty Hunt and Annie Cannon, both of Glade Spring, and Ruby Self of Meadowview; five sons, Roger Riley and Ernie Riley, both of Damascus, Carl Riley of Newton, N.C., Jimmy Riley of Chilhowie, and David Riley of Meadowview; three sisters, Grace Hall of Newton, N.C., Leanor Fox of Tazewell, and Annie Mitchell of Bluefield; one brother, Carl L. Riley of Bluefield; 22 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was born July 9, 1953, in Carroll County to Fred Curtis Ring and Nellie Hanks Ring.
Survivors include three sisters, Guida Newman and Marlene Jennings, both of Galax, and Polly Ward of Fries; three brothers, Mack Ring, Lee Ring and Junior Ring, all of Galax; and several nieces and nephews.

He was born in Carroll County on Oct. 2, 1953 to Loyde and June Bobbitt Rippey.

Mr. Roark was born in Big Sandy, Mont. to Lawrence and Mary (Lewis) Roark. He married Marjorie Kihn on Oct. 3, 1948 in Yakima, Wash. and was the father of four daughters. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Vernon; and two sisters, Edith and Opal Roark.
He is survived by his daughters, Carol Lerner, Shelton, Wash., Janet Roark, Yakima, Wash., Nancy Graf and husband, Dale, Selah, Wash., and Connie Kurbit and husband, John Schwab, Yakima, Wash; his former wife, the mother of his daughters, Marjorie Brookshire, Yakima, Wash.; six grandchildren; a sister, Jewell Robb, Santa Barbara, Calif.; and one brother, Leonard Roark, Sunburst, Mont.

James Kermit Roberts, 74, was remembered at funeral services held April 1 at Elsmere Presbyterian Church in Elsmere, Del. Burial was held in Silverbrook Cemetery.
Mr. Roberts was a supervisor in the trim department at General Motors, retiring in 1983 after 32 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member and elder of Elsmere Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Richard William Roberts in 1983.
He is survived by his wife, Edith "Polly" Roberts; a son, James K. Roberts Jr. of the home; three daughters, Carol R. She was a charter member of the Church of God of Prophecy having attended both Sugar Grove and Marion churches for over 55 years.

Sherman Clay Roberts, age 67, formerly of Marion, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 1997 at his home in Christiansburg.
He was preceded in death by one son, Dale Roberts; and one daughter, Moranda Dawn Roberts.

Rev. Ralph Robinette, age 83, of Atkins, died Friday, May 21, 1999 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Rev. Robinette was the pastor at Mountain View First Church of God in Saltville for many years. After retiring as a pastor he attended the Atkins First Church of God. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Williams Robinette.
Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Edith Hall Robinette of Atkins; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ralph E. and Frances Robinette of Rural Retreat, and Emory & Georgia Robinette of Atkins; one sister, Bessie Robinette of Rome, Ga.; three grandchildren, Connie Woolridge of Rural Retreat, Junior Robinette and Jennifer Robinette, both of Atkins; two great-grandchildren, Jonathon Woolridge and Jacob Woolridge, both of Rural Retreat; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

James Walter Robinson, 92, died Monday, March 24, 1997 in the Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a retired farmer and a member of the Friendship Baptist Church.

Roger Gene Roe, age 49, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998 at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital in Richmond. He was preceded in death by his father, Retired Sergeant Major Carl M. Roe, formerly of Chilhowie, and his grandparents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Meek Rouse and Mr. and Mrs. Will Roe, all of Chilhowie.
Mr. Roe was a native of Colonial Heights, was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and a member of Local Union #111 in Pinellas Park, Fla.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy Fairhurst Roe; his mother and stepfather, Helen and Francis Howell of Colonial Heights; one brother, Edward M. Roe of Sutherland; five sisters: Brenda Meade of Chester; Linda Bryant and Carolyn Jones, both of Colonial Heights; Sandy Smith of Virginia Beach; and Teresa Witte of Hanover County; his stepmother, Sina Lei Roe of Dale City; four stepbrothers: Alua Lei and Vile Lei, both of Dale City, Steve Howell and Dr. Malcolm Howell, both of Richmond; several loving nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Virginia I. Rogers, age 70, of Damascus, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000 in Grace Healthcare of Abingdon.
Mrs. Rogers was born in Russell County, a daughter of the late Giles and Margie Sykes. She had lived in Damascus since 1984 and was a member of the Women''s Auxiliary of the VFW and First Baptist Church in Damascus.

Mrs. Rogers was a member of the McCready United Methodist Church, and a member of the Saltville Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Rogers.

Dr. Carolyn White Rogers, age 78, died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Born Jan. 29, 1920, she was the daughter of the late F.M. and Jacka White. Dr. Rogers was a native of Marion and a graduate of Marion public schools. She attended Marion College and Emory & Henry College after which she taught at Patrick Henry High School in Glade Spring. She obtained her Ph.D. degree with a major in English at Florida State University, Tallahassee, Fla., following which she became a member of the faculty at Mountain Empire Community College for several years. During this time she was instrumental in originating and promoting the John Fox Festival. She was an active, lifelong member of the Democratic Party.
Dr. Rogers was the widow of the late Dr. J.M. Rogers and was also preceded in death by four sisters and one brother.
Survivors include one sister, Eleanor Tilley of Richmond; one brother-in-law, Arthur Fletcher of Largo, Fla.; one stepson, James Rogers of Florida; two nieces, Susan White of Marion, and Jackie Bensinger of San Diego, Calif.

Luther Wesley Rollins Jr., died Monday, Nov. 11, 1996 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

She had lived in Pearl River for 30 years and was a teacher assistant in the Pearl River School District. Edna Weaver Roop, 78, of Mouth of Wilson, Va., died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, in Ashe Memorial Hospital in Jefferson, N.C.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews: Linda and Louell Richardson, Kenny and Geneva Spencer, Freida and John Barker, Pat and Lee Stamper, Francis Weaver, Vivian Jones, Jesse Weaver and Rick Deuterman.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Rev. Mike Sage and Rev. Grady Byrd officiating. Beulah Faye Hash Roop, 82, widow of Edward Roop, died Wednesday, May 7, 1997 in the Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Md.
Mrs. Roop was a native of Whitetop. She was a homemaker for most of her life and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one daughter, Joyce A. Moore, Rockville, Md.; three sons, Gail D. Roop, Ogden, Utah, Boyd S. Roop, Frederick, Md., and Jackie C. Roop, Rockville, Md.; one brother, Willard Hash, Marion; two sisters, Olive Gillespie, Rural Retreat, and Jackie Gay, Tip City, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren.

James W. Roop, age 79, formerly of Ashe County, N.C., died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Roop was born in Ashe County, N.C., a son of the late Charlie Andrew and Nettie Pennington Roop. He was a veteran of World War II, a retired miner and carpenter and a member of United Mines Local 6633 in Hartwell, W.Va., and the Carpenters Union.
Surviving are three sons, Ted Roop of Darlington, S.C., Charlie Roop of Tazewell, and Eddie Roop of North Tazewell; four daughters, Peggy Bolling of Owensburg, Ky., Lakie Edwards of Cedar Bluff, and Shelby Roop and Brenda Durham, both of North Tazewell; three brothers, Reggie Junior Roop and Lester Roop, both of Lansing, N.C., and Jack Roop of Concord, N.C.; one sister, Blanche Miller of Lansing, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; special friend and caregiver, Ellen Rhodes of Seven Mile Ford.

Warren Roop, age 71, of Taylorsville, N.C., formerly of Ashe County, died Tuesday, March 17, 1998 at the Wilkes Regional Medical Center in North Wilkesboro, N.C.
Mr. Roop was born in Ashe County on Sept. 30, 1926 to Aut and Elsie Wilcox Roop. He was a veteran of World War II and a retired carpenter.

Mrs. Rose was a daughter of the late Rev. Charlie Ashby and Mary Compton Ashby. She was the widow of Clinton A. Rose.
She was a member of Rugby Chapel Free Will Baptist Church of Caney Ridge for more than 65 years.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Dale E. and Rowan H. Rose of Hampton; one sister, Earma Ashby; several nieces and nephews.

Clinton Aaron Rose, age 84, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 1996 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Rose was a native of Dickinson County and had been living in the Marion area for more than 50 years. He was a superintendent over the lumber yard at the W.M. Ritter Lumber Company in McClure and retired from the Brunswick Corp. as a supervisor having worked there for more than 29 years. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Della Entis Ashby Rose, Marion; one son and daughter-in-law, Dale E. and Rowan H. Rose, Hampton; one brother, Woodrow Rose, Coeburn; several nieces and nephews.

Esther Shedden Scott Rosen, age 96, died Jan. 7, 1998 in Perry Lutheran Home, Perry, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Erik Ragnar Rosen; a daughter, Carrie S. Hamann; and an infant son, William J. Rosen.
Mrs. Rosen was born in Iowa on Dec. 2, 1901, the daughter of Methodist missionaries and spent her childhood in Elkhart, Cambridge and Des Moines, Iowa. At 18, she met and married Mr. Rosen, a Swedish immigrant homesteader in Montana. After a short stay in Montana, they returned to Iowa and lived in Des Moines and Fort Dodge. The family moved to Marion in 1953 and Mrs. Rosen returned to Iowa in 1988.
She is survived by two daughters, Judith K. Poffenbarger of Omaha, Neb., and Donna R. Sexton of Atkins; five sons: Edgar L. Rosen of Taylorsville, N.C., Norman L. Rosen of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Dan A. Rosen of Vienna, Clifford N. Rosen, Hampton, and Joel Q.S. Rosen of Arlington; 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 12, at 11 a.m. at Davis Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Calvin Tabor officiating. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery.

Fred D. Rosen, age 75, died Wednesday, April 29, 1998 at his home in Arroyo Grande, Calif.
He was born July 1, 1922 in Logan, W.Va., and had resided in Arroyo Grande since 1977 coming from the Orange County area. He was a lifelong breeder of Arabian horses.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ethel of Arroyo Grande, Calif.; one son, Tom Rosen of Fremont, Calif.; one daughter, Kathy Mooney and husband Dean of Temptleton, Calif.; one sister, Miriam Korshak of Houston, Texas; two grandchildren, Michael and Jennifer Ford; one great-grandchild, Samantha Ford.

Gayle Ratcliffe Rosenbaum, age 73, of Glade Spring, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998 in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.

Sherrill Wallace Rosenbaum, age 79, died Monday, May 31, 1999 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Rosenbaum was a native of Smyth County and an avid farmer. He was a graduate of Sugar Grove High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in World War II and was a charter member of the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667. He was retired from Brunswick and was a member of the Southfork Baptist Church where he was a deacon for over 50 years.
Mr. Rosenbaum was preceded in death by one son, William Robert Rosenbaum.

She was a member of the Wharf Hill United Methodist Church and was active in civic affairs in the Sugar Grove community.

William Wade Ross, age 82, died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999 at his home in Greeneville, Tenn.
Mr. Ross was a native of Grayson County and moved to Greeneville in 1961 to establish Ross Appliance and Furniture Store.
He was a veteran of World War II, former board member of the Greeneville-Greene County Chamber of Commerce, a member of Who's Who of America, United Commercial Travelers Inc., Loyal Order of Moose, and other civic affairs and organizations.
He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church.

Leroy Albert Roth, age 82, of Glade Spring, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999 in Ridgefield Retirement Manor.
Mr. Roth was born in Monroe County, Penn., a son of the late Leroy and Jennie Roth. He moved to Washington County around 1943. He was a U.S. Army veteran and retired from Brunswick Corp.

Born Jan. 29, 1934 in Saltville, he was a graduate of Marion Senior High School and served in the United States Navy. He was employed at Brunswick Corporation for 35 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Routh and his wife, Betty Testerman Routh.
He is survived by three brothers, William Routh and James Routh, both of Marion, and Dewey Routh of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters, Marie Crispin of Atlanta, Ga., Eleanor Thomas of Marion, and Linda Finley of Orange Park, Fla.; several nieces and nephews including a very special nephew, Kevin Routh.

He was a former fire chief of Glade Spring Volunteer Fire Department and a member of Southwest Virginia Fireman's Association, veteran.

Doris Griffitts Rummell, age 61, beloved wife of 39 years of Melvin V. "Chick" Rummell, died Sunday, March 30, 1997 in Plymouth Meeting, Penn. She was born in Marion and had attended the Marion College and Roanoke College. She was employed by the Towers-Tarrin Reinsurance Company of Philadelphia, Penn., as File Department Supervisor for 39 years.
Mrs. Rummell was an active member of the Falls Presbyterian Church where she served as Elder, Deacon, and Choir Member. She was preceded in death by her parents, Basil H. and Ruth Caudill Griffitts, and one brother, Robert L. Griffitts.

Blanche B. Russell, 83, of Marion, Va., died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. Mrs. Russell was born in Grayson County and was a founding member of Russell's Chapel Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Neal Russell; a grandson, Tony Russell; two great-grandchildren, Kayla and Kelsey O'Dell; two brothers, Albert and Earl Blevins; and her daughter-in-law, Connie Russell.
Survivors include: three sons and two daughters-in-law, Bobby Russell of Marion, Roger and Linda Russell of Sugar Grove, Va., and Don and Lois Russell of Marion; five sisters, Mabel Vernon of Marion, Wilma Rotenbery of Marion, Ruby Woods of Marion, Paris Shelton of Marion and Marie King of Rural Retreat; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and special buddy, Brian Jackson.
Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday evening from Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Herman Cress officiating. Jesse Lee Russell, age 50, died Friday, March 12, 1999 in the Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Russell lived most of his life in Smyth County and served four years in the U.S. Navy. He attended Virginia Highlands Community College and graduated from Wytheville Community College. He received his Registered Nursing Certificate in 1993. He received certification as a licensed substance abuse counselor in 1994.
Mr. Russell was a well-known musician having played with several groups throughout the area. He attended the Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Rhonda Poe Russell; two sons, Ryan Barker, Virginia Beach, and Jesse "Poochie" Russell, of the home; one daughter, Peggy McGlothlin, Akron, Ohio; two stepsons, Nicholas Poe, Galax, and Justin Poe, Marion; his father and mother, Wiley Lawrence and Virginia Eva Russell, Marion; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, John C. and Janet Russell, Bethana Russell, all of Marion, and the Rev. Dwayne and Dawn Blevins, Danville; one brother and sister-in-law, Allen and Marie Russell, Marion; two grandchildren, Jeremy and Amanda; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 15, at 2 p.m. at the Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment followed in Resurrection Gardens with military honors being rendered by the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667.

Mrs. Russell was a lifelong resident of Smyth County and was preceded in death by her husband Jessie (Jiggs) Russell.

Rev. Albert Richard (Poss) Russell, age 87, died Friday, Jan. 2, 1998 in the Francis Marion Manor.
Rev. Russell was a native of Smyth County and had lived several years in the Cokeysville, Md., area. He was ordained as a holiness minister in North Carolina and preached for over 30 years. He also worked in several rock quarries in Southwest Virginia and Maryland and at Brunswick in the lumber yard.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Hamby Russell; a nephew, Jessie "Jiggs" Russell; and a niece, Ellen Russell Shupe.
Survivors include five nieces, Virginia Romans, Mabel Young, Peggy Sheffield, all of Marion, Mary Clark, Petersburg, and Louise Lloyd, Roanoke; two nephews, William Thomas Russell, Marion, and Johnny Lee Russell, Chilhowie; several great-nieces and nephews.

Hershiel A. "Russ" Russell, age 67, of Saltville, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999 in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Russell was a member of McCalls Gap Presbyterian Church and owner and operator of Russell's Bargain World in Washington County.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Russell; four sons, Arnie Russell and Jack Babcock, both of Saltville, Michael Babcock of Fairfax and Carl Babcock of Florida; four daughters, Helen Marie Landon and Shelley Cowen, both of Saltville, Charlene Durning of Florida and Rebecca Culp of West Virginia; three brothers, Alfred Russell and Elbert Russell Jr., both of Florida, and Cleatus "C.K." Mr. Russell was a lifelong resident of Smyth County and retired from the Marion Bottling Company having worked there for 36 years. He was of the Baptist faith and worked as a carpenter for many years.

Robert Murrell Russell, age 76, died Monday, April 13, 1998 in Johnson City Medical Center, Johnson City, Tenn. He was the son of the late Robert L. and Leavie Russell of Sugar Grove.
Mr. Russell was an active member of the Riverside United Methodist Church in Rich Valley. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Thelma R. Scott and an infant sister, Alene Russell. He was a loving and devoted father, grandfather and husband.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Betty Whitley Russell of Marion; one daughter, Patricia Ann Russell and husband, Dr. Dwight Kilbourne of Johnson City, Tenn.; one son, Professor Robert F.
