Elmo Bane Naff, age 91, of Chilhowie, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998 in the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
Survivors include four sons: James Millard Naff, Indianapolis, Ind., William (Bill) Naff, Oakton, Edwin Naff, Chilhowie, and Donald M. Lusk, Port Huron, Mich.; two daughters, Kathleen McAbee, Gaffney, S.C., Eloise McCall, Meadowview; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one nephew, John J. "Jim" Rouse Jr., Duluth, Ga.
Graveside services will be conducted today, Dec. 12, at noon in Kelly's Chapel Cemetery with the Rev. Paul Jones officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. today at Williams Funeral Home.

Walter L. "Pete" Naff, age 86, died Wednesday, July 9, 1997 in the Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Navy. He was retired from Harwood Company. He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Lou Heldreth Naff.
He is survived by four daughters: Shirley N. Snider of Marion, Betty N. Cress of Charlottesville, Joan N. Norris of Winchester, and Rebecca N. Branson of Wytheville; one son, J.W. (Bill) Naff, Marion; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today, July 12, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Harry Tindell and the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marion Life Saving Crew, P.O. Box 784, Marion, VA 24354.

Edward Storm Nash, age 56, died Sunday, March 14, 1999 at his home in Marion.
Mr. Nash was a native of West Virginia and had been living in the Marion area for over 25 years. He worked for T.D. Sexton Welding & Fabricating in Atkins.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Sue Nash; two stepdaughters, Donna Chapman, Marion, and Judy Pruitt, Atkins; one stepson, William Howell Jr., Marion; two sisters, Joann Pursley, Akron, Ohio, and Maxine Thomas, Richwood, W.Va.; seven step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today, March 17, at 2 p.m. at the Church of God on Matson Drive in Marion with the Rev. Jerry Alley officiating. Interment will follow in the Lowman Valley Church of the Brethren Cemetery.

Nastasi
Evelyn Shipp Nastasi, age 87, died Friday, Nov. 20, 1998 in Cambridge Manor in Stratford, Conn.
Mrs. Nastasi was born in Saltville and resided in Atlanta, Ga., for many years before moving to Stratford, Conn., in 1983. She was a grammar school teacher while in Saltville and later became a sewing teacher for the Singer Company. She was an accomplished seamstress and was very supportive of her husband, the late Anthony Nastasi, and his career growth in the Singer Company. After retiring, she found pleasure in antique collecting and was active in Oronoque Village's Call Program.
Survivors include one daughter, Susan Nastasi, Norwalk, Conn.; two brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside memorial services will be held today, Feb. 20, at the Elizabeth Cemetery in Saltville with the Rev. Scott Robertson-Gouge officiating. Memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1175 Post Road-East, Westport, Conn. 06880.

Pauline H. Neal, 79, died Tuesday, March 18, 1997 in Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
Mrs. Neal was born in Washington County but lived a number of years in Norfolk. She had been living in Smyth County for the past 12 years. She was a member of the Falling Water Baptist Church in Marion and was an avid cook.
Survivors include her husband, Edgar Neal, Marion; two daughters, Shirley Russell, Marion, and Joann Bishop, Norfolk; two grandchildren, Tad Russell and Todd Bishop, both of Norfolk; two great-grandchildren, Laura Bishop and Darrell Bishop, both of Norfolk; two sisters, Logine Johnson, Front Royal, and Laura Fisher, Fayetteville, N.C.; one brother, Richard Henderson, Deland, Fla.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, March 21, at 11 a.m. in Barnett's Funeral Chapel with Pastor Tim Boyette and Pastor Troy Allen officiating. Burial followed in Zion Cemetery in Washington County.

Paul Carson Neal Sr., age 69, died Monday, Sept. 8, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Neal was a native of Washington County and had lived in Smyth County and worked construction for most of his life.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Bernice Neal and two stepchildren, Carol Dennis Copeland and Robert Lee Copeland.
Survivors include one son, Paul Carson Neal Jr., Marion; three stepsons, Roland Eugene Copeland, Stephen City, Kenneth Ray Copeland, Roanoke, and Larry Copeland, Marion; three stepdaughters, Kitty Shell, Stephen City, Patricia Savage, South Carolina, and Cyndy Elliott, Chilhowie; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Rose Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Glenda Haynes Neal, age 68, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997 at her home in Saltville.
She was a member of the Macedonia Freewill Baptist Church in Saltville. She was preceded in death by her parents, Susie and Lawrence Haynes; one sister, Nancy Haynes McNew.

Guyda Carr Neaves, 76
Guyda Carr Neaves, 76, of Galax, a resident of Waddell Nursing Home, died Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at the nursing home.
She was born Oct. 27, 1923, in Grayson County to Boyd Lane and Cora Lee Wingate Carr.
Survivors include four sisters and a brother-in-law, Louise Hackler of Kingsport, Tenn., Mildred Paisley of Galax, Dorothy Melton of Tucson, Ariz., and Edith and Roy Grimes of Fries; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held Friday at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with burial in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Fred E. Jennings officiated.

Necessary
Jennifer Elaine Necessary, age 35, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999 at the University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville.
Jennifer, affectionately known as "Baby Girl" to her parents and "Jay" to her siblings and many friends, was born in Tazewell County. She was a 1982 graduate of Rich Valley High School and a graduate of Virginia Highlands Community College with a degree in computer science. She was employed at Southwestern State Hospital in Marion and was formerly employed with Sam Russell & Associates in Marion.
Survivors include her parents, Kenneth and Evelyn Necessary of Tannersville; two brothers, Gus Necessary of Salem, and Todd Necessary of Emory; two sisters, Joni Lamie of Tannersville, and Lana Harrison of Bristol, Tenn.; one sister-in-law, Kandis Necessary; one brother-in-law, Joe Harrison; one niece, Rebecca Necessary; three nephews, Walker Necessary, Tyler Harrison and Hunter Harrison.
Memorial services were conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17, at the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville with the Rev. Bill Cahill officiating. A private graveside service was held on Monday, Jan. 16.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a charitable donation in Jennifer's name be made to The Organ Transplant Fund as Jennifer was an organ recipient and at the time of her death was awaiting another transplant.

Neel
Stewart Gaby Neel, age 83, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000 at Overlake Hospital in Limestone, Tenn.
Mr. Neel was born Oct. 11, 1916 in Limestone, Tenn., the son of James B. Neel and Gladys Gaby Neel. He formerly lived in the Bethel Community near Abingdon with an aunt, Garnett Bonner.
He graduated from King College in Bristol, Tenn., in 1941 with an A.B. in business. He served four and a half years in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a captain and a pilot. He flew extensively throughout the United States, in the Pacific Theatre, in Africa and to India.
After the war, Mr. Neel began teaching school in Marion and soon after became director of the Chamber of Commerce in Marion. Subsequently, he followed this career to Williamson, W.Va., and then Uniontown, Penn. He organized and directed the Fayette County Development Council in Pennsylvania. He moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1957 and until his retirement in 1982 was employed by Puget Sound Power and Light Company in industrial and community development.
Mr. Neel was active in the Presbyterian church serving as an Elder in four different churches.
Surviving are his wife, Maxine Elizabeth Harris; two sons, Thomas Neel, Belmont, Mass., and Michael Neel, Springfield, Ill.; three daughters, Patricia Ann Neel, Everett, Wash., Betty Kay Neel, Bellevue, Wash., and Susan Neel, Arcata, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson.
A memorial service was held April 15 at 11 a.m. in Bellevue First Presbyterian Church in Bellevue, Wash.

Garland Benford Neel, age 79, of Ceres, VA, died Tuesday, July 28, 1998 at his residence. He was born in Ceres the son of the late Robert Sidney and Ollie Mae Crow Neel and was a member of the Red Oak Union Church. He was a retired corrections officer with the Bland Correctional Center and a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Cralle, and a son, Harry F. Neel.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys Kidd Neel of the home; two granddaughters, Stacey Neel of Fredricksburg, VA and Kristie Neel of Mechanicsville, VA; two grandsons, Shane Cralle and Darin Cralle, both of Marion, VA; a son-in-law, Frank Cralle of Marion, VA; two sisters, Shirley N. Repass of Wytheville, VA and Dare N. Stuart of Ceres, VA; special friends Joe and Sue Lyerly of Garnite Quarry, NC.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 30, 1998 at the Red Oak Church with the Rev. Larry Patton officiating. Interment followed in the Red Oak Cemetery.

Neff
Greek Cassell (Dick) Neff Jr., age 72, of Bronxville, N.Y., formerly of Rural Retreat, died Friday, July 11, 1997 in the Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville, N.Y.
He was born in Rural Retreat, the son of the late Greek C. and Lillian Cassell Neff. He was owner and horseman with the Twin Lakes Farm from 1975 to 1997. A member of the Professional and American Horsemen Association, Mr. Neff was director of the riding program at Radford College. He was known for his direction of the Radford Redcoats and Equestrian Drill Team that performed throughout the southern states. Also, he was a graduate of Rural Retreat High School, Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, World War II. He was past chairman of the Rural Retreat Fair Association, the Lions Club of Virginia and a member of the Methodist church.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Withers Neff of the home; one son, Greek C. Neff III of Belspring; one daughter, Rebecca Neff of Ventura, Calif.; two sisters, Helen Williams of Saltville and Pat Furr of Chesterfield; five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today, July 16, at 11 a.m. at the Fairview United Methodist Church in Rural Retreat with interment in the church cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Rural Retreat American Legion Post #229.

Gladys E. Neff, age 93, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 1996 in Valley Health Care Center.
Mrs. Neff was a native of Washington County but had lived most of her life in Smyth County. She was retired from the Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute in Marion as a supervisor over the aids with 42 years of service. She was also a member of the Sister's of Rebecca.
Survivors include several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
Graveside services will be held Sunday, Nov. 24, at 2 p.m. at Rose Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight, Nov. 23, at Barnett's Funeral Home.

James Harold Neitch, Sr., age 64, of Marion, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998 in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was preceded in death by one son, James H. "Jimmy" Neitch, Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Terry Neitch of Marion; three daughters, Beverly Graham of Bowie, Texas, Connie Hull of Annandale, Va., and Cynthia Heavener of Centreville, Va.; one son, Timothy Neitch of Marion; one sister, Helen Baumgarner of Marion; one brother, Rev. David Neitch of Marion. Eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mary Josephine Sexton Nelson, age 66, of Sparta, N.C., died Friday morning at the Wake Forest University Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was the widow of Bud Nelson. She is survived by one son and daughter-in- law: Donny and Dolly Nelson of Sparta, N.C.; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two sisters: Dorothy Worrell and Aileen Rayburn both of Sparta, N.C. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Monday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with burial in the Shiloh Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.

Emma Hutchins Nelson, age 82, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Nelson was preceded in death by her husband, Ray H. Nelson Sr., and one son, Richard Carl Nelson.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Fayette Pruitt of Marion, and Rosie and Bill Hackler of Vanceboro, N.C.; one son and daughter-in-law, Ray Jr. and Zola Nelson of Seven Mile Ford; two sisters, Wanda Teaster of Trenton, Ohio and Etta Mary Taylor of Chesapeake; eight grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; a special lifelong friend, Geraldine Griffitts Vencill, Marion.

Cathy Sheffield Neprud, age 43, of Suffolk, formerly of Marion, died March 6, 1998 in Obici Hospital following a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her father, W.C. Sheffield.
She was a member of Whaleyville United Methodist Church, the National Education Association and the Virginia Music Educators Association. She was employed by Suffolk Public Schools, teaching music at Robertson and Mt. Zion elementary schools.
She is survived by her husband, Scott A. Neprud; one son, Scott Alan Neprud Jr.; one daughter, Catherine Nicole Neprud; her mother, Kathleen Sheffield of Marion.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 10, at 2 p.m. in Whaleyville United Methodist Church in Suffolk with the Rev. Larry J. Renfrow officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Sam Roger Gillespie Sr., age 60, died Wednesday, March 11, 1998 at his home in Essex, Md.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Gillespie; three sons, Sam Gillespie Jr., Gary Gillespie and Douglas Gillespie; one daughter, Sandra Prysiazny; two sisters; five grandchildren.

Howard C. Nester, 82, of Laurel Fork, died in his car while riding with his wife in Hillsville, Monday, March 5, 2001, of a heart attack. He had been battling a congestive heart failure condition for several years. He was born in Laurel Fork Jan. 31, 1919, to the late Emmett and Lutitia Nester. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Annie Faye Nester who died at birth and two brothers, Garvin Nester and Madison Nester. Mr. Nester is survived by his wife of 62 years, Violet Branscome Nester and his son and daughter-in-law, Gary Edward and Cathy Lynn Nester of Williamsburg, VA. He has three surviving sisters, Bessie Jackson of Hillsville, Violet Trull and Maudie Alderman both of Martinsville and two surviving brothers, Delmon Nester of Laurel Fork and Mauton Nester of Crooked Oak. He has two grandchildren, Amber Lynn Nester and Aaron Alexander Nester both currently attending James Madison University. Mr. Nester was a WWII veteran serving as a Chief Petty Officer in the Seabee's of the U.S. Navy in the South Pa fic conflict from 1942 until the end of the war in 1945 participating in eight island invasions. He worked for Vulcan Materials Company for 52 years, finishing the last 26 years of his career with Vulcan's Midwest Division based in Chicago. He was the General Superintendent of operations for all facilities in Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana. For the last 17 years he has been retired to his fox farm in Laurel Fork, VA. Services were held at 1 p.m. March 9, 2001, at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville with Military Rites conducted by the Hillsville VFW Post 1115. The Rev. Brian Childress officiated the services and entombment followed at the Nester Cemetery in Laurel Fork, VA.

Survivors include one son, Samuel Neugent, Saltville; one daughter, Angela Neugent, Saltville; one sister, Pat Delp, Chilhowie; three brothers, Fred Harris and Wally Harris, both of Saltville, and Graham Harris, Ohio; one granddaughter, Chelsey Neugent; one grandson, Gregory Harris; several nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Jeff Harris, Saltville.

John Conard Newman, age 71, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999 in the Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Newman was born in Rural Retreat and had lived most of his life in Rural Retreat and Marion. He retired from Virginia House Furniture with over 20 years of service.
Mr. Newman was preceded in death by one daughter, Lola Heath.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Lena Mae Newman; his mother, Rhoda Mozelle Mabry, Dublin; three sons, Junior Newman and Mike Newman, both of Marion, and Butch Newman of Rural Retreat; two daughters, Peggy Clark and Betty Moore, both of Atkins; two sisters, Betty Cox and Helen Manuel, both of Dublin; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 19, at 2 p.m. in Bradley''s Funeral Home with the Rev. James Porter and the Rev. Duane Wall officiating. Interment followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery.

Charles Robert "Bob" Newman, age 67, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999 in Tinley Park, Ill., after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his father, H.H. Newman.
Surviving are his wife, Joanne Newman, Tinley Park, Ill.; his mother, Margaret Newman of Kingwood, Texas, formerly of Marion; his sister, Charlotte Ritchie, Kingwood, Texas; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Vicky Newman and Mark and Ellen Newman, all of Tinley Park, Ill.; one daughter and son-in-law, Marianne and Marty Kerns, Tinley Park, Ill.; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Dallas R. Newman, age 93, formerly of Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, May 6, 1998 in the Edgemont Health Care Center after a pleasant residency of 4 years.
Mr. Newman was an "Official Greeter" at the Marion Walmart Store from the opening day until 1994. He was remembered as the man with the Red Bow Tie, Hat and Suspenders. Mr. Newman was a lover of children. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia King Newman; a son, Franklin Newman; one sister and two grandchildren.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sis and Sam Cassell of Wytheville, VA; one son and daughter-in- law, Mike and Joan Newman of Nashville, TN; a daughter-in-law, Helen R. Newman of Crockett, VA; two brothers, Dr. John Newman of Roanoke, VA and Garnett Newman of Chilhowie, VA; eight grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 9, 1998 at 7:30 p.m. in the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church with a sunset burial and Masonic Service at the Mountain View Cemetery following the service. Conrad Belford "C.B." Newman, age 81, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999 at his home in Wytheville.
Mr. Newman was born in Carroll County, the son of the late Rev. Conrad and Lura M. Davis Newman. He was a self-employed house contractor and also worked as a store clerk. He was a driver of the District 3 for Senior Citizens in Marion.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Wright Newman, of the home.
Funeral services will be held today, Oct. 16, at 2 p.m. at Barnett's Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Brenda Viars and the Rev. Charles McMillian officiating. Interment will follow in the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery. Pascal Wiseman "Jack" Newton, 71, of Saltville, died Wednesday, April 16, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Marie Newton.
He was retired from the U.S. Air Force and the Raytheon Company.
Survivors include one son, Jackie Thomas Newton, Saltville; one daughter, Phyllis Ann Newton, Saltville; three sisters, Daisy L. Mr. Nichols was born in Ashe County to Bessie Nichols Strimlin. He worked at Jefferson Wood Products.

Douglas Allen Nipper, 70, of Saltville, died Tuesday, May 6, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He attended McCready United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Hardy Roberts VFW Post 732 in Saltville.
He was a retired employee of the Olin Corporation as well as the American Furniture Corporation.
Survivors include his wife, Carrie Call Nipper, Saltville; one daughter, Mrs. Charlie (Connie) Jackson, Abingdon; one brother, J.W. Nipper, Portsmouth; two sisters, Mrs. Charlie (Sarah) Surber, Saltville, and Mrs. Malcolm (Pansy) Surber, Princeton, W.Va.; one grandson, Drew Jackson; several nieces and nephews.

Donna Jo Norder, age 45, of Lakeland, Fla., died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000 in an accident at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla.
Mrs. Norder was born in Marion on Aug. 25, 1954. She moved to Lakeland from Maryland four years ago. She was a retired lieutenant colonel reservist in the Air Force. She retired from the Air Force Reserves in April 1999. She was a life member of the U.S. Air Force Association, a life member of the Reserve Officer's Association, and was a consultant with Booz-Allen-Hamilton Consulting Services.
She received two master's degrees, the first from Golden Gate University, where she majored in public administration. The second was in national security studies from Georgetown University.
She is survived by her husband, Mark J. Norder of Lakeland, Fla.; her mother, Dorothy W. Smith, Lakeland, Fla.; her father, Joe Thomas Smith, Lake Toxaway, N.C.; and her goddaughter, Amanda Davis.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 10 a.m. at Lakeland Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Colonel Cecil Richardson officiating. Entombment was in Lakeland Memorial Gardens in Lakeland, Fla.

Ruth Helen Norman, age 75, of Joppa, Md., died Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998 in St. Joseph's Hospital in Towson, Md.
Mrs. Norman was born in Atkins to Carrie Burchette Wassum and the late Floyd Wassum. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John W. Norman in 1996, and a son, Glenn W. Norman. She attended Emmorton Baptist Church.
Surviving are her mother, Carrie B. Wassum of Atkins; two sons, Charles E. Norman of Edgewood, Md., and Maynard L. Norman, Perryville, Md.; five daughters: Grace H. Testerman and Anna M. James Glenn Norris, 73, was remembered at funeral services held April May 27 at Union United Methodist Church with the Rev. T. Steven McLain officiating. Burial was held in the church cemetery.
Mr. Norris was born June 16, 1926 in Ashe County to G.C. "Cleve" and Molly Greene Norris. He was one of the first firemen for the Cricket Volunteer Fire Department after its organization in the late fifties. Mr. Norris retired from Gardner Mirror after 31 years of service. The last 17 years spent in Phoenix, Arizona at the Gardner Mirror-Western Division. After retiring in 1993, he returned home to the Cricket Community and worked part time at Boone Trail Autohaus. He was a member of Liberty Grove Baptist Church in Fleetwood.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Helen Elliott Norris, of the home; one daughter, Debbie Shepherd, Miller's Creek; one son, Dannie Norris, Jonesville; five sisters, Lucy Waugh and Ruth Crumpler, both of North Wilkesboro; Lib Hartzog, Miller''s Creek; Helen Ross and Ruby Wagoner, both of Elizabethton, Tenn.; three brothers, Allie Norris, Fleetwood; G.C. "Jack" Norris, Jr., Boone; and Paul Norris, Lansing. Six grandchildren also survive.

Mrs. Norris was a lifelong resident of Glade Spring and was the widow of Otho B. Norris. She was a member of the Grace Street Presbyterian Church in Glade Spring.
Survivors include two sons, Ned Norris, Glade Spring, and Ed Norris, Roanoke; three daughters, Jackie Holmes, Warrenton, Dale Hubbard, Bristol, Tenn., and Ruby Thomas, Denver, Colo.; three brothers, Lawrence Thomas and Kenneth Thomas, both of Glade Spring, and C.G. Thomas, Saltville; two sisters, Dellavene Jackson and Joy Hurd, both of Glade Spring; several grandchildren including a special granddaughter, Dreama Mutter; several great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Dec. 19, in Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring with Dr. Darlene Litton officiating. The family will meet at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Grace Street Presbyterian Church in Glade Spring.

Rev. William A. Novak, age 83, of Bristol, died Saturday, July 26, 1997. He was a native of Baltimore, Md., and came to Bristol in 1955 with Raytheon as a systems engineer. He began his ministry service in 1961, attended Emory University and Graham Bible College, was ordained in 1969 and continued his 36-year ministry serving the community and surrounding areas until his retirement in 1995.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Novak of Bristol; four daughters, Patricia Wingard of Deltona, Fla., Teresa Smith of Waldorf, Md., Lisa Johnson of Charlottesville and Linda Johnson of Nashville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

James Lee Nunley, age 30, of Abingdon, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Mr. Nunley was a lifelong resident of Washington County and a son of Freddie and Katherine Doss Nunley of Abingdon. He was employed by Summitt BSR Roofing, was of the Baptist faith and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He was preceded in death by a brother, Freddie Nunley Jr.; his grandfather, Bill Nunley; his grandmother, Alice Nunley; an aunt, Ruby Nunley; and an uncle, Willie Gene Nunley.
Surviving, besides his parents, are his wife, Nickie Sinclair Nunley; one daughter, Kuristian Nunley, of the home; one son, Michael Harris of Marion; three sisters, Virginia Anderson of Abingdon, Tammy Begoli of Burlington, N.C., and Angela Blankenship of Crestline, Ohio; maternal grandmother, Katherine Plummer of Abingdon.

Richard Van Nutter, age 67, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998 at his home in Saltville.
He was a former Olin employee and a retired employee of Westinghouse Corp.
He was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy, Bristol, Tenn., and was a deacon in the church for 30 years.
Survivors include his wife, Zelda Routh Nutter; three sons, Richard W.
