Keen

Edward Shirl Keen, age 74, of Atkins, formerly of Richlands, died Thursday, April 27, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

Mr. Keen was born in Raven and was a son of the late Marvin Hubbard Keen and Ziel Mason Biby Keen. He was a lifelong resident of the Atkins area and was of the Holiness faith.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one son, Allen Keen; one daughter, Margaret Wix; and one brother, Franklin Keen.

Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Louise Keen; eight daughters, Pat and husband Roy Beckner of Salem; Bonnie Garrett of Roanoke; Georgia McWilliams, Brenda and husband Ken Cole, and Elizabeth and husband Wayne Compton, all of Marion; Sharon Barker of Gordensville; Stella and husband Richard Mullins of Atkins; and Sarah and husband Raymond Sheets of Sugar Grove; three sons, Alvin Keen of Marion, Luther and wife Rita Keen of Richlands, and Walter and wife Wilma Keen of Sugar Grove; five sisters, Pauline Perry, Swords Creek, Beulah Arrington, Norma Vance, Doris Grimmett and Rinda Osborne, all of Richlands; 28 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, May 1, at 2 p.m. at the HurstScott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Arnold Street and the Rev. Kathleen Stanley officiating. Interment followed in the Westfork Cemetery in Richlands.

Ethel McVey Keene, age 88, of Chilhowie, died Thursday, April 15, 1999 at Francis Marion Manor. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Edward Keene.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted today, April 17, at 11 a.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Lundy officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Clair Bottom Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Martha Doane Keesee, age 66, of Saltville, died Tuesday, May 9, 2000 at the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.

Mrs. Keesee was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert W. "Bodie" Keesee.

Surviving are four sons, Jimmy Keesee, Jeff Keesee, Michael "Mutt" Keesee, all of Saltville, and Johnny Keesee, Chilhowie; one daughter, Debbie Scott Keesee, Marion; one brother, Buddy Doane, Saltville; four daughters-in-law, Debbie Keesee, Susie Keesee, Lori Keesee, and Robin Keesee; six grandchildren, Christy Mullins, T.J. Keesee, Gregory Keesee, Bodie Keesee, Cody Keesee, and Wesley Keesee.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, May 11, at 2 p.m. at the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Briggs officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the Funeral Home.

Everett Eugene "Grandpappy" Keesee, age 57, of Atkins, died Tuesday, May 12, 1998 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Smith Keesee; three sons, Alan Keesee, Chilhowie, Bobby Petty and Kenny Petty, both of Marion; three daughters, Anna Brooks, Chilhowie, Rhonda Petty and Pamela Propst, both of Atkins; four brothers, Ernest Keesee, Sierra Vista, Ariz., Burton Keesee, Gate City, David Keesee, Chilhowie, and Tommy Keesee, Fairfax; four sisters, Virgie Wilson, Patsy Brooks, both of Chilhowie, Norma Shuler, Saltville, and Mary Curry, Marion; five grandchildren: Cody Keesee, Brandon Keesee, Josh Keesee, Hunter Propst and Keegan Petty.

Josie Sproles Keesling, age 88, of Wytheville, formerly of Sugar Grove, died Saturday, June 27, 1998 in the Evansham Manor Nursing Home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton Keesling; a daughter Shirley Wagner; a granddaughter Angie Keesling; and her parents, Dr. John Easterly Sproles and Blanche Campbell Sproles.

She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Peggy and Sonny Hedrick, and Linda Shrader, all of Wytheville; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard "Jack" and Betsy Keesling, Kingsport, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 30, at 11 a.m. at the Wharf Hill United Methodist Church with interment in the Ridge Lawn Cemetery, Sugar Grove.

Richard Eldridge "Dick" Kegley, age 69, of Chilhowie, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998 at Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport, Tenn.

He was a native of Bristol, a 1945 graduate of Virginia High School and attended Emory & Henry College.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, an active member of the Chilhowie United Methodist Church, chairman of the Chilhowie Planning Commission, a long time employee of the H.S. Williams Co. in Marion, and he loved the game of golf.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard E. and Dona C. Kegley of Bristol.

Survivors include his loving wife, Peggy Madison Kegley; two daughters, Tamara K. Ball, Houston, Texas, and Kyra K. Bishop, Chilhowie; two sons, Steven R. Kegley, Chilhowie, and Richard E. "Dickie" Kegley, Abingdon; eight grandchildren, Shelley and Jeremy Blevins, Leslie and Tommy Bishop, Mick and Lynzi Kegley, Eric and Brandon Kegley; two daughters- in-law, Sherri B. Kegley and Dawn T. Kegley; two sons-in-law, Arlin D. Ball and Thomas B. Bishop; two brothers, Ralph Jessee and Bernard Jessee, both of Bristol; a very special aunt, Dee Kegley of Warner Robbins, Ga.; several nieces, nephews, and aunts; and many very special friends.

Boyd Kegley, 97, of Galax, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at Blue Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Kegley.

He was born April 21, 1903, in Grayson County to Cicero Matthew and Nancy Moser Kegley. Survivors include a sister, Sadie K. Chappell of Galax; a half sister, Creva Frost of Galax; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held Saturday at Mount Vale Cemetery. The Revs. Jeff Taylor and Billy C. Melton Sr., officiated.

Jack Kilby, 87, was remembered at funeral services held April 27 at Faith Lutheran Church in Whitetop, Va. Pastor Will Robertson and Rev. Tim Boyette officiated. Burial followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens in Jefferson. Masonic rites were conducted by Mouth of Wilson Masonic Lodge #213 A.F. & A.M.

Mr. Kilby was born in Kewanee, Ill. to John T. Kilby and Maggie Edwards Kilby. He was a World War II, U.S. Army Air Corp. veteran and a retired electrician IBEW.

He is survived by his wife, Lula McCall Kilby; two sons and daughters-in-law, John T. and Mary Jane Kilby, Jefferson, and Robert L. and Joyce Kilby, West Jefferson; five grandchildren, Heather Jane Kilby, Maggie Barrett, Nathaniel Kilby, Andrew Kilby and Natalie Kilby; and two great-grandchildren, William Reed Barrett and Lily Jane Barrett.

Charles W. Kegley, age 75, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998 at his home in Atkins.

Mr. Kegley was a veteran having served in the United States Army. He was a member of the First Church of God in Atkins.

He is survived by his wife, Aleene Blevins Kegley of Atkins; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Eddie Sheets of Rural Retreat, and Mary and Eddie Barrett of Saltville; two granddaughters, Patricia Lynn Webb and Lisa Renee Blankenbeckler, both of Groseclose; one great-granddaughter, Natasha Webb of Groseclose; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held today, Feb. 14, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Ron Whitener officiating. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat where military rites will be conducted by Francis Marion VFW Post #4667.

Mary Aretta Rose Keiser, age 64, of Cottondale, Ala., died Friday, March 17, 2000 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Mrs. Keiser was born in Smyth County and had resided in Cottondale for 36 years.

Survivors include one son, Kenneth R. Rose of Marion; four sisters, Nellie Kathy Jones of Abingdon, Betty Lou Testerman, Linda Juanita Martin and Judy Mae Grace, all of Marion; two brothers, Ronnie Rose of Marion, and Denny Rose of Rural Retreat; two grandchildren, Megan Kendra Rose of Marion, and Alicia Rose Lyttle of Spring Lake, N.C.

Herman Keith, age 82, of Chilhowie, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999 at the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.

Mr. Keith attended the Chilhowie First Church of God. He was retired from Northwestern Wire and Steel of Sterling, Ill. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of Frances Marion VFW Post #4667.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Irene French, and a brother, B.F. Dinsmore.

He is survived by his wife, Madeline Harris Keith, Chilhowie; his mother, Maggie Dinsmore, Saltville; one sister, Mary Brown, Denison, Texas; special friends, Bill Bise, Rob Coe, and Graham Church; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, Nov. 12, at 7:30 p.m. at the Chilhowie First Church of God with Pastor Bobby Dunn officiating. Committal services will be held today, Nov. 13, at 11 a.m. in the Mount Rose Mausoleum in Glade Spring. Members of Frances Marion VFW Post #4667 will fold and present the flag. Frances Sexton Kell, age 88, died Saturday, June 12, 1999 in Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.

When she was young, Mrs. Kell worked for Grey Hosiery Mill, Big Jack Manufacturing and Bristol Paper Box Company in Bristol. She was a member of the South Fork Baptist Church and she had lived at Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie for 10 years where she was very lovingly cared for.

Mrs. Kell was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Kell; her father and mother, Frank and Lina Craft Sexton; two children, William A. Kell Jr. and Peggy Kell; two sisters, Orpha Mae Verran and Dewey Milhorn; three brothers, A.D. Sexton, Landon Sexton and Lewis Sexton; one stepbrother, Carl Pippin; and stepmother, Bertie Pippin Sexton.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Bob Morgan of Marion, and Yvonne and Bob Runyon of Bristol; one son and daughter-in-law, George and Willine Kell of Fayetteville, N.C.; six grandchildren: William Alan Morgan and wife Tracey of Marion, Bobby Runyon Jr. and wife Beth of Bluff City, Tenn., Gary Runyon and wife Brenda of Piney Flats, Tenn., Junior, Mike and Becky Kell of North Carolina; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Leola Barlow of Bristol; two brothers, Nathaniel (Mick) and wife Margaret Sexton, and Earnest Sexton, all of Bristol; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Henry Alonzo "Lon" Kell, age 85, died Friday, Nov. 14, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was a member of the Chilhowie Church of God and was retired from the Virginia Dept. of Highways with over 37 years of service.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Doane Kell of Marion; one daughter, Lou Verne Kell Robinson, Marion; one son and daughter-in-law, Henry Andrew "H.A." and Gaynell Kell of Marion; one sister, Louise Avery, Memphis, Tenn.; three brothers, Charles "Jack" Carrico and Bernie Carrico, both of Marion, and James Preston Carrico of Hopewell; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

Levada Bridgeman Kell, age 76, died Saturday, April 3, 1999 in Smyth County Community Hospital. She was the widow of James Kell.

Survivors include three daughters, Betty Joan Hayden, Marion, Jo Ann Wise, King, N.C., and Pat Sayers, Wytheville; one son, Robert Alen Kell, Marion; two brothers, Walter Bridgeman and Charles Bridgeman, both of Marion; her mother, Rosie Sexton, Marion; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 5, at 2 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Chapel with the Rev. David Neitch officiating. Burial followed in Round Hill Cemetery.

Helen Virginia Kelley, age 75, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 1998 at her home in Tannersville.

Mrs. Kelley attended the Little Valley Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sally and Press Abel; three sisters, Dora Abel, Ruth Wyatt and Louise Holmes; and one brother, Harvey George Abel.

Surviving are her husband, Harold Kelley; one son, H.C. Kelley, Saltville; two daughters, Donna Holmes, Maryville, Tenn., and Arlene Hager, Tazewell; six sisters: Oakie Palmer, Marion, Elma Palmer, Glade Spring, Curtis Vanhoozier, Tannersville, Margaret Taylor, Saltville, and Vernie Smith, Beckley, W.Va.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, at the Little Valley Christian Church with the Rev. Bill Cahill officiating. Burial followed in the Crabtree Cemetery.

Gary Edsel Kelly, age 64, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1997 at his home in Crockett.

He was born Nov. 26, 1932 in Glade Hill (Franklin County), the son of the late Lucian Ted and Minnie Alice Smith Kelly.

Pastor Kelly was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, a former fireman with the Roanoke City Fire Dept., and had worked for the Texaco Oil Co. He served as Lutheran pastor at the FloydWillis Parish for 11 years and the Cripple Creek Parish in Crockett for 14 years.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Lou Kelly, of the home; two daughters and son-in-law, Deidre Kelly and Garvice Jones, Boones Mill, and Christina Marie Kelly, of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Gary William Kelly, Timothy David and Jennifer Kelly and Michael Goebel and Judy Kelly, all of Roanoke; seven grandchildren: Sean Kelly, Erin Kelly, Brandon Kelly, Katie Kelly, Monica Cowden, Angela Jones and Amy Jones; his mother-in-law, Admiral Cole, Roanoke.

A funeral celebration will be held today, Jan. 4, at 11 a.m. at the United Lutheran Church with Bishop Richard F. Bansemer, Pastor Jim Bangle, Pastor Ed Schaack and Pastor Joe Shumate officiating. Private inurnment will take place at a later date. The family requests that those who prefer may make memorials to the United Lutheran Memorial Fund.

The family will receive friends at the residence at any time and following the services at the church with a potluck luncheon.

Nancy F. Kelly, age 88, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, N.C.

Affectionately known as "Nana," Mrs. Kelly was a native of Winston-Salem and was of the Methodist faith. She attended Salem College and UNC-Chapel Hill and formerly worked in the North Carolina public school system and also worked in her husband's business. She lived in Marion for 25 years and in Richmond for 15 years.

Mrs. Kelly was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard W. Kelly Sr., and a grandson, Robert E. Kelly.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Leonard W. "Bill" Kelly Jr., MD., and Julia E. Kelly, Richmond, and Robert M. "Bob" Kelly and Barbara O. Kelly of High Point, N.C.; brothers, Wilbur D. Fulton of Seven Lakes, N.C., and Jonathan W. Fulton of Winston-Salem, N.C.; sister, Martha Wyke of Shelby, N.C.; grandchildren, Leonard William Kelly III, Elizabeth K. Baicy, Timothy P. Kelly, Cristie K. Good, and Michael M. Kelly; great-grandchldren, Harper Lee Kelly and Joseph William Baicy.

Jacob Scott Kelly, infant son of Chad Everett Kelly and Melissa Woods Kelly, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998.

Kelly

Robert Ellis Kelly, age 31, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999 in Richmond.

Mr. Kelly was born July 19, 1968 at Fort Bragg, N.C., the son of Dr. and Mrs. L. William Kelly Jr. He was a graduate of the Collegiate Schools of Richmond and the University of Virginia where he was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity and played on the University Club Lacrosse Team.

During the summers, he was employed as a member of the Virginia Beach Lifesaving Service. After graduation, he worked at the University of Glasgow, Glasgow, Scotland, in vascular research for a year. He then completed two years at the University of Glasgow School of Medicine where he played on the rugby team and was a member of the University Debate Team and the University Union.

Mr. Kelly will be remembered by his family and many friends as a young man of great sensitivity who loved and excelled in academics, athletics, and landscaping and water garden design.

In addition to his parents he is survived by two brothers, Timothy Porter, who lives at Good Neighbor Village, Richmond; and L. William III and his wife Katherine Persons Kelly, and nephew Harper Lee, all of Richmond; one sister, Elizabeth Kelly Baicy and husband John Kyser Baicy, and nephew Joseph William, all of Winston-Salem, N.C.; maternal grandmother, Frances Stephens Ellis, Richmond, formerly of Marion; his paternal grandmother, Nancy Fulton Kelly, Greensboro, N.C., formerly of Marion.

Brenda Ray Kelly, age 47, of Glade Spring, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at the Johnston City Medical Center.

She was a graduate of Richlands High School and was a member of Joy Baptist Church in Chilhowie. She was preceded in death by her father, Chester V. Ray.

Survivors include her husband, James P. Kelly, Glade Spring; two sons, James P. Kelly, II, and Christopher Ray Kelly, both of the home; her mother, Effie Cordle Ray, Cedar Bluff; one sister, Paula Ray Castle, Cedar Bluff; a niece, Kelli Danielle Castle.

Services to celebrate her life will be held Saturday, March 4, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Joy Baptist Church in Chilhowie with the Rev. Neil Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring.

JOHN CLAYTON KEMP, age 77, of Wytheville, Virginia, died Saturday, October 21, 2000 in the Birdmont Health Care Center. He was born in Kimball, West Virginia, the son of the late F.M. and Bessie Bond Kemp. He graduated from Jackson Memorial High School, received his B.A. from Emory and Henry, received his Master of Education from the University of VA and did additional studies for his doctorate at V.P.I. He began his teaching career at Snowville Elementary School in Pulaski County and served as principal in the Wythe County School System for 33 years, having retired from Spiller Elementary School in 1985. Mr. Kemp was a member of the Wythe County Retired Teachers Association, The Virginia Retired Teachers Association, National Retired Teachers Association, Phi Delta Kappa, a member of the Wythe County Ham Radio Club and The American Radio Relay League. He was chairman of the Board of Commissioners for Wytheville Redevelopment and Housing Authority; a member of the board of Joy Ranch Children's Home; Board of Joy Ranch Christian School and Chaplain of Gideon's International. He was a member of the Wytheville Presbyterian Church where he served as leader and chairman of Strengthening the Church Committee. He was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, post #2719 where he served as Past Commander and Chaplain. His hobbies were ham radio operator, woodworking, reading, electronics, picture framing, arts and crafts and fishing. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Wayne Kemp.

He is survived by his wife, Carrie Branscome Kemp of the home; a son and daughter-in-law - Arthur "Artie" and Donna B. Sarah Marie Blankenship Kennedy, age 85, of Saltville, died Sunday, June 7, 1998 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

She was a native of Saltville and the widow of Henry H. Kennedy. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Adam and Louvina Blankenship; and two sons, Henry E. Kennedy and Robert R. Kennedy.

Hilda Clear Kent, Glade Spring, died Wednesday, June 25, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. She was a native of Saltville but had lived in Glade Spring for a number of years. She was a beautician before her retirement and was a member of the Grace Presbyterian Church. She was the widow of Preston M. Kent.

Survivors include one son, Robert J. Kent, Newport News; two daughters, Ruth Moss, Danville, and Doris Frazier, Woodberry, Tenn.; one sister, Margaret Frye, Saltville; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Lois Atwood Kent, age 88, of Saltville, died Wednesday, May 21, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.

She was a retired employee of Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation and a member of Madam Russell United Methodist Church.

James William Kent, 76, of Chilhowie, died Tuesday, April 22, 1997 at Smyth County Community Hospital. He was a member of Sheet Metal Workers International Local Union 9 with over 40 years of service. He was veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Farris I. Kent, Chilhowie; one daughter, Karen V. Kent of Chilhowie; two aunts, Edith Leftwich of Roanoke, and Nell Sanders of San Francisco, Calif.

Elizabeth Kent, age 79, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1999 at her home in Calvert City, Ky.

Mrs. Kent was born Feb. 22, 1920 in Saltville, the daughter of the late Arthur and Hattie (Kelly) Gillenwater. She was formerly of Mayfield, Ky., and was a member of First Baptist Church of Mayfield. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William B. Kent II.

Surviving are one son, William B. Kent III, Calvert City, Ky.; one grandson, Kris Kent, Dyersburg, Tenn.; one great-granddaughter, Hannah Elizabeth Kent, Dyersburg, Tenn.; two brothers, Pat Gillenwater, Pensacola, Fla., and Bob Gillenwater, Springfield, Tenn.

Samuel Marion Kerns, 64, passed away following a brief illness.

A native of Unicoi County, he was a son of the late Charles and Laura Belle Love Kerns. He was employed by Murray Security, but previously worked for the Unicoi County Sheriffs Department. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Howard Kerns, William E. Kerns, and Charles Kerns; and two sisters, Nellie Bennett and Myrtle Childress.

He is survived by his wife, Stella Parsons Kerns; one son, Franklin Carter Kerns, Erwin, Tenn.; two daughters, Carol Ann Cornelius, New Port Richey, Fla., and Donna Lynn Gardiner, Port Richey, Fla.; one step son, Bryan Royal, Johnson City, Tenn.; one step daughter, Michelle Whitson, Erwin, Tenn.; two brothers, Robert E. Rev. Bruce Kerns, age 69, of the Daniel Boone community, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at Holston Valley Medical Center.

A native of Scott County, he was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Rev. Kerns was a Virginia licensed funeral director and had been employed by Scott County Funeral Home since 1960, where he was presently serving as manager.

He had been pastor of Kaylor's Chapel Baptist Church for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bass Kerns and Louise McDavid Kerns; and brothers, Claude Kerns and Lyle Kerns.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Rhoton Kerns of Gate City; one daughter, Deborah Kerns of Gate City; one grandson, Brandon Hensley of Gate City; and one nephew, Darrell Kerns of Gate City.

Services will be conducted today, Dec. 23, at Kaylor's Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Johnny Duncan and the Rev. Daryle Hurd officiating. Music will be provided by the Kaylor's Chapel Baptist Church Choir.

The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of VFW Post No. 9830, American Legion and Highpoint Baptist Church.

Joseph Andrew Keys died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999 in Mt. Airy, N.C.

Mr. Keys was born in Glade Spring, a son of Samuel W. Keys and Katherine Peery Keys. He grew up in Glade Spring and was the youngest licensed merchant in Virginia when he operated "Joe''s Store" at age 12.

He attended Virginia Tech and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the mail service in the South Pacific. After the war, he worked briefly in Washington D.C., and moved to Richmond where he worked for Topps Co. for 30 years. He relocated to Mt. Airy in 1950, where he retired as regional sales manager of Topps in 1980. He coowned and operated Jerry Lewis Cinema in Mt. Airy for a number of years after retirement. He was a deacon at First Presbyterian Church in Mt. Airy.

Mr. Keys' father, a local banker and former president of Virginia Bankers Association, inspired him to become the youngest licensed merchant in Virginia.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Samuel W. Keys Jr.; and two sisters, Katherine Keys Caffrey and Elizabeth Keys Hansen.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Katherine McCarty Keys; one daughter, Katherine K. Allison of Richmond; one sister, Vernon K. Mark of Media, Penn.; two grandsons, William Clay Gilbert Jr., and Joseph Andrew Gilbert, both of Richmond; a caregiver, Wesley McCarty of Rocky Mount.

Paul Spradlin "Trey" Keyser III, age 35, died Thursday, March 18, 1999 in Johnson City, Tenn.
Mr. Keyser was a native of Richmond and lived in Marion and Charlottesville prior to locating to the Johnson City area two years ago. He was a former manager of Southern States Coop in Marion. He was employed as an agent of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company and was a member of Central Baptist Church in Johnson City.

Mr. Keyser was an avid fly fisherman, grouse hunter and a member of both Trout Unlimited and the Ruffed Grouse Society. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, the 1998 graduating class of the Johnson City-Jonesborough-Washington County Chamber of Commerce Leadership 2015 Program, of Bristol Leadership Tomorrow, and served as a volunteer with the March of Dimes.

Survivors include his wife, Angela Sykes Keyser; one son, James Tanner Keyser of the home; one daughter, Halle Elizabeth Keyser of the home; two brothers, Tabb Keyser of Garner, N.C., and Travis Keyser of Richmond; one sister, Amy Keyser of San Francisco, Calif.; his grandmother, Rose Keyser of Lanexa; two half-brothers, Jeremy and Justin Keyser of Vinton; two stepsisters, Amy Davis of Atlanta, Ga., and Caroline Davis of Charlottesville; three stepbrothers, Will Davis of Blacksburg, and Robbie and Tommy Johnson of Richmond.

Mildred B. Kidd of Warrenton died Monday, April 12, 1999 in Oak Springs Comprehensive Care Facility in Warrenton.

Mrs. Kidd was a native of Washington County and had lived in Damascus for many years before spending the past three years in Warrenton.

She was employed as a nurse's aid with Wythe County Community Hospital and was also a private health care provider for many years. While living in Damascus, Mrs. Kidd was an active member of Damascus Senior Citizens and of Konnarock Seventh-day Adventist Church.

She was the widow of William L. Kidd.

RALPH M. KIDD, SR., age 84 of Bastian, Virginia, died Thursday November 9, 2000, at his residence. He was an elder of the Bastian Union Church and a Mason for more than 62 years. He was a retired correctional officer with the Bland Correctional Center and served in the U.S. Army. Ronald Frederick Kien, age 61, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 1997 in the Ridgefield Retirement Home.

Mr. Kien had been living in the Upper East Tennessee area prior to relocating to Seven Mile Ford. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force having served during the Korean War.

He is survived by several distant relatives and many loving friends.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Sept. 15, at 11 a.m. in Mountain Home Veterans Cemetery Chapel with interment in the Veterans Cemetery with full military honors. There will be no visitation at the Funeral Home.

Loretta Pickle Kilby, age 73, widow of Lee Junior Kilby, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

Mrs. Kilby was a retired employee from the Town of Marion Recreation Department with 25 years of service. She was a charter member of the Marion Lifesaving Crew Auxiliary and a member of the Marion First Church of God.

She is survived by one daughter, Brenda Kilby Cress of Marion; two sons, Danny Lee Kilby of Chilhowie, and Keith Foster Kilby of Marion; her mother, Gertrude Pickle of Glade Spring; two sisters, Charlotte Gentry of Marion, and Frances Lester of Glade Spring; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Barbara Jean Kilby, age 60, of Grant, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

She was born April 11, 1938, in Rugby, the daughter of Lee and Connie Brooks Kilby.

Mr. Kilby was born in Kewanee, Ill. to John T. Kilby and Maggie Edwards Kilby. He was a World War II, U.S. Army Air Corp. veteran and a retired electrician IBEW.

Bernice Ritchey Killinger, age 80, formerly of Marion, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997 at the home of her daughter in Indian Trail, N.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Killinger, and was the daughter of the late Rev. Ernest Ritchey, a Methodist minister in Marion.

Mrs. Killinger and her husband were lifetime residents of Marion. Mrs. Killinger was an active founding member of the Wilderness Road Garden Club. Her dedicated efforts to make a Nature Trail along the Middle Fork of the Holston River have been carried on by numerous Girl and Boy Scouts, Job Corp students and the Town of Marion.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca "Becky" Killinger and Randy Gillis of Indian Trail, N.C.; two granddaughters, Bryna Suzette Allen of Dallas, Texas, and Wendy Michelle Allen of Boulder, Colo.; two sisters Helen Lambert and husband of Roanoke, and Inez Barker of Ocala, Fla.; one brother, Commander Glen Ritchey and wife of Washington State; one brother-in-law and wife, Dr. George P. Killinger of Marion; 11 nephews and two nieces.

A memorial service will be held at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Marion on May 10 and later a sprinkling of her ashes over her husband's grave at Round Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ebenezer Lutheran Church roof and expansion fund, at Mrs. Killinger's request.

Rev. Kimberlin was ordained into the ministry on July 25, 1971 and served Ashe and Alleghany counties. He was born in Ashe County to James and Laura Grogan Kimberlin. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one grandson, Gregory Ray Trivette.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia D. Kimberlin; three daughters, Laura Ann Eldreth and Lisa Lambert, Fleetwood, and Illa Bryne, Todd; one brother, George Talmadge Kimberlin, Lake Norman; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and 12 step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was born in Marion, Virginia, the daughter of the late Joseph M. and Pauline Ruth Hubble Haulsee. She was an employee of Edgemont Center and a member of Crockett Tabernacle Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter C. "Slim" King. She is survived by: a daughter and son-in-law - Carol and Randy Shelton of Wytheville, VA; a son and daughter-in-law - Ronald "Rusty" and Karen "Cindy" King of Cripple Creek, VA; 3 grandchildren - Amanda Shelton, Randy "Bubba" Shelton, Jr., and Ronnie King, II; two brothers - Bobby Joe Haulsee of Vale, NC and David Haulsee of Rural Retreat, VA; step-mother - Ruby Hauesee of Rural Retreat, VA; step-daughter - Gloria Jean Parker of Newport News, VA; step-son and wife - Walter Lee "Junior" and Charlotte King of Wytheville, VA; step-brother - Wayne Wright of Greenville, TN; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 1, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Richard Collins officiating. Interment will follow in rosewood Memorial Gardens, Rural Retreat, Virginia. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday or at the home of her daughter, Carol Shelton at any time.

King

Janet J. King, age 66, of Rural Retreat, died Tuesday, April 8, 1997 in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

She was a graduate of Marion College and furthered her education in music at George Washington University at St. Louis, Mo. She taught music for many years and also played the pipe organ for her church for 20 years. She had been employed by the Governmental District Three in Wytheville for the past five years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Isaac Greek and Jettie Huddle King; one sister, Bonnie Fields; and two brothers, Arnold King and Ivan S. King.

She is survived by one sister, Ruby K. Groseclose of Marion; one brother and three sisters-in- law, Everett C. and Nancy King, Martinsville, Etta Mae King, Burlington, N.C., and Nina King, Fort Worth, Texas; two nieces and husband, Kathy G. and Gerald E. Mabe, Wytheville, and Amy K. King, Raleigh, N.C.; two nephews, Larry King and Roger King, both of Burlington, N.C.; two great-nieces, one great-nephew, two great-great-nieces, many friends, students and neighbors.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 10, at 2 p.m. at the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Countiss officiating. Interment followed in the Mountain View Cemetery in Rural Retreat. ELENA GLADYS FERGUSON KINSEY, age 72, of Tampa, Florida and formerly of Rocky Gap, Virginia, passed away Saturday, November 4, 2000. Hubert Kirby, age 89, died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998 in Smyth County Community Hospital. Mr. Kirby was a long time member of the Marion Baptist Church and the Convention Bible Class. He was a native of and lived in Smyth County all his life.

Mr. Kirby was retired from Southwestern State Hospital as Superintendent of the Building and Grounds after 35 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Snavely Kirby.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Katherine Kirby of Marion; two grandsons, Charles Kirby Jr. of Richmond, and Ronnie Kirby of Marion; three sisters-in-law, Virginia Kirby and Vada Kirby, both of Marion, and Dot Kirby of Radford; one brother-in-law, Ernest Snavely of Marion; two great-granddaughters and two step-great-granddaughters; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Aug. 23, at 2 p.m. at the Marion Baptist Church with Dr. William A. Slater officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. Ella Mae Dye Kirk, age 95, widow of Worley Lewis Kirk, died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998 in Smyth County Community Hospital. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Violet Stuart; one son, Robert Lee Kirk; and two stepsons, Sherman Kirk and Vernon Kirk.

She is survived by six daughters, Vera Lorleberg of Floyd, Virginia Robinson of Marion, Ruth Gore and June Teel, both of Sugar Grove, Virgie Miller of Rome, Ohio, and Barbara Pruitt of Baltimore, Md.; four sons, John Kirk of Essex, Md., Paul Kirk of Rhoadesville, Luther Kirk of Pulaski, and George (Red) Kirk of Catlett; one sister, Adeline Helton of Kingsport, Tenn.; one brother, Jeff Dye of East Lebanon, Ohio; four stepbrothers, Darty Price of Saltville, Charlie Price of Meadowview, Lewis Price of Clinchburg, and Bailey Price of Buchanan County; 28 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren.

Beatrice Roberta Kirk, 53, of Rhoadesville, died Friday, March 14, 1997 in Fairfax Hospital. She was a member of the Manassas Free Will Baptist Church and was attending Franconia Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher. She had been employed with NEC Technology for more than eight years. She was preceded in death by her parents, James O. and Gertrude B. Paxton.

She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Rev. Paul Edward Kirk; four sons, James E. Kirk, of Bealton, Paul David Kirk of New Baltimore, Larry a. Kirk of Sumerduck, and William W. Kirk of Catlett; two daughters, Beatrice "Elaine" Miller of Midland, and Rebecca Ann Pembleton of New Baltimore; four sisters, Anne Paxton, Grottoes, Dorothy Paxton of Manassas, Joyce Sisson of Manassas Park, and Lena Leonard of Fayetteville, N.C.; nine grandchildren.

Pauline Scott Kirk, age 80, died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998 in Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home.

Mrs. Kirk was a long time member of the Elizabeth United Methodist Church and a life long resident of Sugar Grove having lived in Teas most of her life. She was retired from the Harwood Manufacturing Co.

Mrs. Kirk was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Earl Scott; one brother, Avery N. Ayers Jr.; and a grandson, Kevin West.

Ralph L. Kirk, age 71, of Chesapeake, Ohio, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999 at Princeton Community Hospital.

Mr. Kirk was born Aug. 6, 1927 in Coalwood, Ohio, the son of the late Gaylord R. and Virginia Baker Kirk. He was a resident of Coalwood the greater part of his life, living in Chesapeake the past five years.

He was a retired mine foreman from Olga Coal Co. in Coalwood and was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Pearl Kirk; one son, Michael Kirk; one brother, William "Bill" Kirk; and one sister, Dorothy Fisher.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Ruth Bellomy Kirk of Chesapeake; three sons, Joseph L. Kirk of Genoa, Daniel Kirk and Gene "Ringo" Kirk, both of Coalwood; one daughter, Lisa R. Kirk of Welch; four half brothers, Freddie, Bobby Joe, Glen and Curtis Kirk; and five half sisters, Kathern, Wanda, Janice, Vickie and Norma; seven grandchildren; one great- grandchild.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 30, at 11 a.m. at Fanning Funeral Home in Welch with the Rev. Daniel Parish officiating. Entombment followed at Grandview Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Bluefield.

Kenneth Ashby Buck, age 60, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000 at his home in Marion.

Mr. Kirk was a life long Smyth County farmer. He was preceded in death by his two wifes, Mary Pearl Sapp and Mamie Hawkins.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Jean Kirk of Gainesville, Ga. and Dean and Nancy Kirk of Norton, Va.; two brothers, Howard Kirk of Marion, Virginia and Dewey Kirk of Sugar Grove; four grandchildren, Patricia Lasch, William Kirk, Theresa Kirk and Dean F. Kirk Jr.; two step-great-grandchildren, Amber Adams and Jade Adams. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held today, December 30, 2000 at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Rev. John Graham officiating. Burial will follow in West Cemetery.

Ada Lewis Kiser, age 100, died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998 in Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home.

Born March 1, 1897 in Tazewell, she had been a resident of Marion since 1933 and was a long time member of the Marion Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Gent Kiser in 1946 and by her only son, George William Kiser in 1977.

Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Mrs. George W. (Dottie) Kiser of Marion; two grandsons, Dr. William David Kiser of Marion and James Donald Kiser of Spartanburg, S.C.; three great- grandchildren: Stephanie Dawn Kiser, Amy Elizabeth Kiser and Brett Christopher Kiser.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 10, at 2:30 p.m. at the Marion Baptist Church with Dr. William A. Slater and the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Graveside services were held Sunday, Jan. 11, at 2:30 p.m. in the Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell. Helen Privett McCormick Knoll, age 71, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.

Mrs. Knoll was the daughter of the late Esther and Ambrose Privett and was a very devoted mother, grandmother and mother-in-law. She was a member of the East End Baptist Church in Marion.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard McCormick Sr.; a son Gary; and a brother Bill Privett.

Survivors include three sons, Howard McCormick and Don McCormick, both of Marion, and David McCormick of Atkins; two sisters, Virginia Taylor and Betty Widner, both of Marion; one brother, Riley (June) Privett, Annandale; four grandchildren, Randy McCormick, Ricky McCormick, Tony McCormick and Jessica McCormick; three daughters-in-law, Brenda, Joyce and Carol; one granddaughter-in-law, Debbie.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 11 a.m. in Bradley''s Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Jones and the Rev. Ron Whitener officiating. Interment followed in the Anderson Cemetery in Adwolfe.

Roby E. Knuckles, age 83, of Chilhowie, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

Mr. Knuckles was a native of West Virginia.

Surviving are several cousins and nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held Friday, Oct. 29, at 2 p.m. in the Laurel Springs Cemetery.

Ann Williams Krouse died Monday, April 7, 1997 at her home in Marion. She was a member and deaconess of the Rappahannock Christian Church in Dunnsville. She also taught Sunday School and was president of the C.W.F.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Betty McVicker of North Highlands, Calif.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Susan Williams, and Harry and Patsy Williams, all of Marion; one sister-in-law, Eunice Wells of Richmond; two grandchildren, Tom McVicker and Jennifer McVicker, both of North Highlands, Calif.

Mary Louise Johnson Kyle, 72, of Independence, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at Twin County Regional Hospital.

She was the widow of Jessie Junior Kyle. She was born Feb. 12, 1928, in Elk Creek to John Wise Johnson and Eula Hale Johnson.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth Kyle of Independence; a grandson, D.J. Kyle of Independence; a great-granddaughter, Celiene Desiree Kyle of Galax; two sisters, Edna Emmons of Independence and Edith Diggs of Columbus, Ohio; one brother, Garnett Johnson of Elk Creek; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral was held Tuesday at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with burial in the Elk Creek Community Cemetery, Elk Creek. The Rev. Curtis Wolfe and Elder Douglas Patterson officiated.
