WALLACE HENDERSON GAGE, age 85, of Henrico County, Virginia (The Richmond area), died Wednesday November 1, 2000 at St. Mary's Hospital in Henrico County, Virginia, after a massive stroke. He did not suffer after the initial stroke, and his son was present at the passing of life to the hereafter.
Wally, as he was known to his family and friends, was born in Eagle Bridge New York, on October 19, 1915, an outskirt of Hooksick Falls, an hour northeast of Albany. Wally was educated at the Williams College (Massachusetts) Preparatory School, Connecticut Wesleyan University, and the University of the South (Sewanee).
During his senior college year, Wally was driving back to New York via the Wilderness Trail Route (US Rt. 11) and was hit by another car at the Staley's Crossroads near Rural Retreat. Hospitalized for a long time, Wally net a country girl nurse named Fern Isbell Hall. The two liked one another and stayed in contact throughout World War II. After graduation from Sewanee in Elizabethan English, Wally was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served four years at the Hickman Army Air Field at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Wally watched his return ship sink on 7 December - The day of infamy - and saw many of his buddies killed or wounded. After Pearl Harbor was left in shambles, Wally was kept in the U.S. Army Air Weather Service, then logistics and finance. He served in the Pacific Theatre, finally ending in the Philippines. After the war ended, Wally returned to the states to find his country girl nurse and propose.
Married in September 1945 at Williamstown, Massachusetts, Wally and Fern worked in Washington, DC and Minneapolis before settling in Richmond. He worked for the Glen Falls Insurance Company while Fern worked for the Medical College of Virginia. A son, Samuel was born in December 1947. In the 1950s, Wally, Fern and Sam moved to Henrico County so Sam could attend Saint Christopher's School. Wally worked steadfastly at his insurance work. He found time to pursue his hobby: flying.
Retiring at 65, Wally became involved in a chapter of the Pearl Harbor's Survivors Association for his old Army unit. He remained active until his legs started bothering him in mid-2000.
