EDEN Claudine Vest Fain, of Eden Estates, went home to be with her Lord Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at Morehead Memorial Hospital, after a lengthy illness.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, at First Baptist Church of Draper. Burial will be in Dan View Cemetery.
Born in Floyd County, Va., on July 12, 1916, daughter of Charles Jefferson Vest and Sarah Elizabeth Kennett, she was a member of First Baptist Church of Draper and was a choir member of the church for many years. She was retired from Fieldcrest Mills.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Leonard Fain.
She is survived by her daughter, Joan Carpenter Massey and husband, Morgan of Richmond, Va.; son, Cecil "Butch" Carpenter and wife, Brenda of Greensboro; step-daughters, Linda Fain Haynes and husband, Philip of Fredricksburg, Va., and Theresa Fain Christensen and husband, Chris of Kanab, Utah; eight grandchildren, Taylor Massey, Craig Massey, Charles Carpenter, Sarah Carpenter, Melita Pickens, Daniel Haynes, Jonathan Christensen and Joshua Christensen; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lois Bailey of Stuart, Va.
Visitation is from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, 2000, at Fair Funeral Home. The family will meet other times at the home of a nephew, Clarence Bowling, 1722 Maryland Ave., Eden.

Faine
Charles E. Faine, of Mason, Ohio, formerly of Marion, died Tuesday, March 11, 1997.
Mr. Faine served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard in World War II. He was a plant manager for Brunswick Corp. and vice president of operations for Textron/Randall Corp.
He is survived by his wife, Avanelle Spicer Faine; one daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Randall Sale; two sons and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Sharon Faine, and Richard Faine; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret and Sherman Smith, Ann and Joe Baker, Joyce and Daryl Lust, and Virginia and Gary Murray; four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 14, at 2 p.m. at the Shorten & Ryan Funeral Home in Mason, Ohio. Memorial donations may be made to the Cancer Society or the Heart Association.

EDWARD JOSEPH "JOE" FALWELL, age 63, of Wytheville, Virginia, died Thursday, January 11, 2001, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. He was a magistrate of the 27th judicial district with 20 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran and had served 13 years with the Wytheville Police Department. He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Mark Falwell. He is survived by: his wife - Louise Frazier Falwell of the home; a son - Edward Gordon Falwell of Wytheville, VA; a daughter - Rachel Lynn Falwell of Rural Retreat, VA; his mother - Evelyn Falwell; two brothers and sister-in-law - Timothy and Cathy Falwell, Bradley Falwell, all of Wytheville, VA; a sister - Connie Dutcher of Panama City, FL; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 14, 2001, at 2:00 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Sonny Ayers, the Rev. Cecil Frazier and the Rev. Leland Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany Cemetery, Poplar Camp, Virginia. Mary Smith Fannin of Coalwood, W.Va., died Sunday, Nov. 9, 1997 in Welch Emergency Hospital.
She is survived by one sister, Ruby Fannin of Marion; one son, Ernest Fannin of Marion; four daughters: Kathleen Cassell of Narrows, Lillian and Helen Fannin of Coalwood, W.Va., and Mrs. Roger (Betty Jane) Cox of Newhall, W.Va.; one granddaughter, Mrs. Jay (Monica) Richardson of Sugar Grove; one grandson, Jason Vanover of Gastonia, N.C.; one step-grandson, David Scott of Roanoke; two great-grandsons, Ethan and Jacob Richardson of Sugar Grove; one step-great- granddaughter, Emi Scott of Rural Retreat.

Donald Ray Farmer, age 46, died Monday, Oct. 27, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was a former resident of Dickenson County and a member of Atkins First Church of God.
Survivors include one son, Rick Farmer, Clintwood; one daughter, Wanda Farmer, Clintwood; two brothers, Clifford Farmer and Roger Farmer, both of Clintwood; two nieces.

Howard T. Farmer, age 58, of Elizabethton, Tenn., died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998 at Columbia Sycamore Shoals Hospital.
A native of Green Cove, living in Carter County for the past 37 years, he was the son of the late Robert and Fannie McCoy Farmer. He was a member of the Green Cove Christian Church, attending the Stoney Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Farmer was an employee of Snap-On Tools. He was preceded in death by a half-sister, Faye Luther.
Survivors include his wife, Gennivee Taylor Farmer, of the home; one son, Jeffrey Howard Farmer, of the home; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Janet and Carroll Hall, Bealeton, and Shirley and T.A. Testerman, Midland; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, in the Autumn Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Estep and the Rev. Leonard Bowers officiating. Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Taylor Cemetery.

Talmadge Franklin Farmer, age 66, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Farmer was a native of Grayson County and had lived most of his life in Smyth County. He was employed with the Holston River Rock Quarry for many years and with Visador Company for 10 years.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Farmer; one son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Linda Farmer, Marion; three brothers, Stacey Farmer and Robert Earl Farmer, both of Marion, and Willis Farmer, Hiawassie; one granddaughter, Victoria Farmer, Marion; several aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday,. Dec. 14, in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment will follow in the Haw Orchard Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Ocie A. Farmer, age 83, of Whitetop, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999 in Chelsea Community Hospital, Chelsea, Mich.
Mrs. Farmer was a native of Lansing, N.C., had lived in Whitetop most of her life and was the widow of John H. Farmer. She was also preceded in death by a son, Larry Farmer; three sisters and two brothers.
She was an avid quilter and gardener and was active in the Whitetop Senior Citizens Center.
Survivors include five sons, Henry Farmer, Johnny Farmer, Leroy Farmer and Doug Farmer, all of Ypsilanti, Mich., and Jimmy Farmer of Manchester, Mich.; two daughters, Shirley Weaver of Pickerington, Ohio and Ann Calhoun of Ypsilanti, Mich.; two sisters, Mecie Rupard and Effie Wingler, both of Whitetop; 32 grandchildren; several great- grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; six daughters-in-law, Lucille Farmer, Laurie Farmer, Patricia Farmer, Janice Farmer, Kathy Farmer and Donna Farmer; two sons-in- law, Phil Weaver and Joe Calhoun.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today, Feb. 10, in Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. W.C. Mayo officiating. Burial will be in Farmer Memorial Cemetery in Lansing, N.C. Stella S. Farmer, age 73, died Thursday, March 18, 1999 in Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Farmer was retired from Harwood.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Louis Goodbrod of Marion; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Ada Tilson of Marion, and Zuria and David Austin of Austin, Texas; two brothers, Robert Farmer and Jack Farmer, both of Marion; three grandchildren, Elena Jones, Robert Jones and Morgan Jones; several nieces, nephews and many special friends.

Ruth Medley Farmer, age 75, died Friday, June 26, 1998 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She is survived by her husband, John F. Farmer of Marion; three sons, James Dean Farmer, Johnny F. Farmer Jr., and George Lee Farmer, all of Marion; one sister, Edith Harris of Bland; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 28, at 4 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Marion Boggs officiating. Burial followed in Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat.

Farrington
Denver L. Farrington, age 75, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Farrington was a native of North Carolina and had lived most of his life in Smyth County. He was the owner and operator of Farrington's Motel and the Marion Motel. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served in the European Theatre. He was also a member of the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667.
Survivors include his wife, Eunice Everett Farrington; one daughter and son-in-law, Rev. David and Carol Anderson, Staunton; one stepson and wife, Bill and Brenda Everett, Chesapeake; two sisters, Opal Ghormley, and Jewel Gasdia, both of Ft. Myers, Fla.; three brothers, Howard Farrington, W.L. (Lester) Farrington and Russell Junior Farrington, all of Marion; six grandchildren, Lori Anderson, Rob Anderson, Marc Anderson, Nathan Anderson, Wendy Lee Everett, and Samuel Todd Everett; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m. in Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Anderson and the Rev. Carlton Blankenship officiating. Interment followed in Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Rural Retreat, with military honors being rendered by the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667.

Howard R. Farrington, age 79, died Monday, April 5, 1999 at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tenn.

Mary J. Farris, of Saltville, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mrs. Farris was a lifelong resident of Washington County and a daughter of the late W.J. and Willie Goff. She was a member of Mahanaim United Methodist Church in Clinchburg.
Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Bolden E. Farris; two daughters, Barbara Ann Walls of Saltville, and Shirley F. Laura M. Parks Farris, age 87, of Meadowview, died Saturday, July 26, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was a native of Fairwood and had lived most of her life in Washington and Smyth counties.
She was of the Methodist faith and was a member of Blackwell Chapel Union Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest H. "Shorty B" Farris; two sons, John Preston Farris and an infant son.
Survivors include four sons, William B. Farris, Dover, Del., Charles L. "Buck" Farris, Niceville, Fla., James E. "Jim" Farris, Lebanon, and the Rev. Ted O. Farris, Gallup, N.M.; three daughters, Laura E. "Teeny" Coe and Nina R. Crabtree, both of Marion, and Betty M. Bordwine, Saltville; 24 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and five nephews.

Felty
Edith Edna Martin Felty, age 102, of Wytheville, died Friday, Jan. 3, 1997 in the Birdmont Health Care Center.
She was born Feb. 18, 1894 in Greenwood, the daughter of the late John William and Matilda Jane Moyer Martin. She was preceded in death by her husband, John William Felty and an infant son.
Mrs. Felty graduated from Greenwood High School and Roanoke Business College. She came to Wytheville and accepted a position with the S.F. Ewald Insurance Agency in 1914. She joined the St. Paul Methodist Church in 1915 where she taught Sunday School for 50 years.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Willis L. (Helen) Corvin, and Mrs. William L. (Margaret) Snavely of Wytheville; four grandchildren, William B. and Mary Corvin, Herndon, Willis G. and Loretta Corvin, Thaxton, Lynda H. and Ray Dossett, Morehead City, N.C., Robert J. and Caroline Hurt, Smithfield; one step-grandson, Michael and Teresa Snavely, Marion; 11 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Maude Du Bois, Milford, Penn.; one sister-in-law, Myrtle Repass, Birdmont Health Care Center; a host of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Robert Hoke Fender, age 83, of 10629 Hwy. #113, Piney Creek, N.C., died Saturday, March 27, 1999, in the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. Mr. William Bryan Fender, age 42, of 1388 Fender Mountain Rd., Sparta, N.C., died Wednesday evening, Sept. 22, 1999, at his home. He is survived by one brother: Roland Fender of Rockledge, Florida. Several cousins and friends also survive. A graveside service will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Union Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.
Fenner
Addie Greer Fenner, age 92, of Damascus, died Thursday, July 9, 1998 in Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie.
She was a native of North Carolina, had lived in Damascus most of her life and was the widow of Arthur Fenner. She was also preceded in death by one son, Jones Baker.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church and a member of the Damascus Senior Citizens.
Survivors include one daughter, Ellen Baker Smith, Damascus; five sons, Roy Baker, Ardsley, Penn., James Baker, George W. Baker, Lloyd Baker and John Baker, all of Damascus; two stepdaughters, Odell Stamper, Damascus, and Marjorie Lamb, Yorktown; one sister, Ruth Garrett, Damascus; two brothers, Hoy Greer, Damascus, and Harley Greer, Elizabethton, Tenn.; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 25 great-great- grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Fenyk
John Raymond Fenyk Sr., D.V.M., age 79, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000 in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Dr. Fenyk was born July 23, 1920 in New York City, the son of Michael and Sophia Bracio Fenyk. He received his B.S. from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J., in 1942. He received his D.V.M. from Kansas State University in 1946. He was a professor of Animal Husbandry at the University of Arkansas in the late 1940s.
For more than 30 happy years, Dr. Fenyk practiced general veterinary medicine in Marion and surrounding counties. He was proud of his profession and promoted it vigorously, contributing significantly to the construction of the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association headquarters building in Richmond. He was a life member of both the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association and was quite active in the Southwest Virginia Veterinary Association, the Southern Veterinary Medical Association and the East Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association.
Dr. Fenyk was a co-founder of Virginia House Furniture Corporation which ultimately became Smyth County's largest employer. He was active in the Democratic Party and was always ready for a lively political discussion. A beloved husband and father, Dr. Fenyk never met a man he did not like and in his years of retirement, he enjoyed his family, learning, walking, watching the stock market and impromptu card games.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Evelyn Maxine Crawford Fenyk of Marion and St. Petersburg, Fla.; five children and spouses, John Raymond Fenyk Jr., M.D., and Dianne C. Ronald A. Ferguson, age 55, died Monday, Dec. 8, 1997 in Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, Tenn.
Mr. Ferguson was a Route Man for A.D. Ferguson & Son in Memphis, Tenn., for many years before moving to Marion, where he had been a courier for Federal Express for the last 13 years. He was of the Baptist faith and was an organ donor.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra L. Ferguson of Marion; one daughter, Tracey W.A. Lipford of Memphis, Tenn.; one son, Steven Bradford Ferguson, Memphis, Tenn.; his mother, Adele Vanlandingham Ferguson of Searcy, Ark.; one brother, James D. Ferguson Sr., of Searcy, Ark.; two stepdaughters, Tracey Gross and Sharon M. Hart, both of Marion; two stepsons, James Harold Harvey of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Larry Ronald Conway of Marion; 13 grandchildren.

Robert Cecil Ferguson, age 59, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999 at his home in Chilhowie.
Mr. Ferguson was born in Glade Spring, lived in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and moved to Chilhowie in 1989.
Surviving are his wife, Mary R. Ferguson, Hi-Nella, N.J.; one son, Robert Charles Ferguson, Hi-Nella, N.J.; two brothers, James Carl Ferguson of Burlington, N.C., and Paul Ferguson of Conesville, Ohio; one sister, Freda Hirschberg of Pennsylvania.

Tessie Ferguson, age 80, of Wytheville, died Friday, Dec. 3, 1999 in the Roanoke Community Hospital in Roanoke.
Mrs. Ferguson was a member of the Maranantha Church of God in Wytheville and was a former hospice volunteer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nelson LaFayette and Minerva Elizabeth Parsons Church; her husband, William Thomas Ferguson; one sister and four brothers.
Surviving are five daughters and son-in-law, Helen Ferguson Mize, Christine "Sis" Ferguson and Brenda Ferguson, all of Wytheville, Delores Ferguson Jones of Gorner, Ill., Tammy Ferguson and Richard Gardner, of Waukegan, Ill.; one son and daughter-in-law, James T. and Mary Ferguson of Waukegan, Ill.; three sisters, Lessie Eller of Abingdon, Md., Pearl Wells of Boomer, N.C., and Cola Scott of Wilkesboro, N.C.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Ferrell
Rev. Edgar Thomas Ferrell Jr., age 87, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Rev. Ferrell was born March 31, 1912 in Lynchburg, the son of the late Edgar T. and Geneva Stone Ferrell. He held degrees from Lynchburg College and the Episcopal Theological Seminary at Alexandria. He was ordained to the sacred ministry on June 7, 1936 at St. John's Church in Lynchburg and assigned to the churches at Marion, Glade Spring and Saltville by the Rev. Robert Carter Jett, DD., first bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southwestern Virginia.
In 1937, Rev. Ferrell was instrumental in establishing the Weekday Religious Program in public schools in Marion. In 1947, he was instrumental in establishing the Marion Community Chest, which in time would become the Marion United Way. From 1957 to 1981, in addition to his parish ministry, he was in charge of the operation and maintenance of the Bishop Phillips Memorial Conference Center adjacent to Hungry Mother State Park in Marion. In 1967, he received the Community Service Award from the Marion Kiwanis Club and in 1973 was awarded the Outstanding Community Service honor by the Marion Chamber of Commerce.
Since 1969, he had been a member of the Board of Smyth County Community Hospital. He resigned as rector of Christ Church in Marion on June 30, 1973 after 37 years in the parish ministry, and retired April 1, 1977 after 47 years in the active ministry of the Episcopal Church. He represented his Diocese as a Deputy to five General Conventions and gave of his time and interest to Diocesan and Community affairs.
He is survived by his wife, Madge Snider Ferrell of Marion; four nephews, Dr. F.B. Teague of Lynchburg, Dr. Nelson S. Teague of Roanoke, Lt. Col. George S. Ferrell, USAF Ret. of Lynchburg, and Gentry R. Ferrell, Attorney, of Lynchburg.
The Burial Office will be read Thursday, Sept. 23, at 10:30 a.m. at the Christ Episcopal Church with The Rt. Rev. Frank Neff Powell D.D., and the Rev. Robert W. Beauchamp officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Marion. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Christ Episcopal Church.

ALBERT C. "AL" FESTA, age 91, of Wytheville died Monday August 21, 2000. He was the son of the late James and Mary Emilia Festa of Ossining, New York. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia SAlvatore of Pekskill, NY and Elizabeth Festa of Ossining, NY and one brother William Festa of Ossining, NY. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sara Ann Byrd Festa, of Wytheville. Two sons and daughters-in-law: Steven and Carolyn Festa, of Sherrills Ford, NC; Barry B. and Jane Festa, of Wytheville; a brother, Wallace Festa, of Stowe, Vermont; two granddaughters, Amelia Festa and Molly Festa and one grandson, Travis Festa, all of Wytheville; one nephew and four nieces.

James "Jim" Samuel Finley, age 70, of the Middle Fork Community in Whitetop, died Friday, April 30, 1999 at his home.
Mr. Finley was born Aug. 26, 1928 in Whitetop, the son of John Harrison and Susie Blevins Finley.

Ralph William Firestone, age 54, died Tuesday, June 3, 1997.

Rosa Lee Fisher, age 80, of Rural Retreat, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998 at the home of her son in Brinklow, Md. She was the widow of K.R. Fisher.
She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late William H. (Burr) and Molly Elizabeth Shupe Holston. Mrs. Fisher was a retired employee of Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute in Marion.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Rosa Mary and Larry Reedy, Rural Retreat; two sons and daughters-in-law, James C. and Naomi Fisher, Brinklow, Md., and Rodney and Frankie Fisher, Ridgely, Md.; one sister, Virgie H. CARL GRAHAM FISHER, age 75 of Roanoke, Virginia, formerly of Wytheville, died Sunday, September 17, 2000. He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Emmett and Cora Heldreth Fisher. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a former member of the Wythe County Rescue Squad and had worked many years for the Southwest Virginia Enterprise. He is survived by is wife Anna Lee "Anne" Fisher of the home, son and daughter-in-law Dennis and Paulette Fisher of Roanoke, VA; daughter Patty Fisher of Roanoke, VA; grandsons Chad and Corry Fisher of Roanoke; sister and brother-in-law Hazel and Joe Manuel of Fairview, OR; sister-in-law Josephine Alderman of Bland, VA; brothers-in-law Warren Thompson of Max Meadows, VA; Arch Thompson and Raymond Thompson, both of Wytheville. Sally Sanders Fisher, age 89, of Rural Retreat, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999.
Mrs. Fisher was born in Tazewell County, the daughter of the late Harve and Mary Compton Sanders. She had been a longtime member of the Asbury United Methodist Church and the Cedar Springs Community. She had been a much loved and respected member of the Ellis and Mackie Fisher family for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Dale Fisher; her sisters, Ethel S. Cochran and Bannie S. Gill; and her brother, John Sanders.
She is survived by several nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

David L. Fisher, age 64, died Tuesday, April 14, 1998 in West Jefferson, N.C.
He was born November 20, 1933 in Michigan. He went to Michigan State and was in the Marine Corp. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, worked in wood work all his life and was employed by Macro Company in West Jefferson, N.C. for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Mae Patton Fisher of Marion; one daughter, Denise Fisher of Marion; two sons, David Metzger of Seattle, Wash., and Yale Metzger of Anchorage, Alaska; one stepdaughter, Karen Hastings of Boone, N.C.; two stepsons, Larry Blalock of Charlotte, N.C., and Dana Blalock of Statesville, N.C.; one sister, Sally Coulan of Venice, Fla.; one brother, Fredric Fisher, Toledo, Ohio; two grandchildren; five step- grandchildren; four step-great-grandsons.

Elizabeth C. Fleming, age 78, of Clemmons, N.C., died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999 at Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Health Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Mrs. Fleming was a native of Loudon, Tenn., and moved to Chilhowie in 1942 and later to Damascus in 1977. She had resided in Clemmons since 1993.
Mrs. Fleming had attended the First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Winston-Salem, N.C., and was the widow of Allen F. Fleming.
She is survived by two daughters, Brenda Aznavour of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Nellie Mills of Clemmons, N.C.; two sisters, Ruth Roop of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Martha Russell of Harrison, Tenn.; one brother, Floyd Craig of Jefferson City, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Mills Boser, John Mills III, and Ronald Radford; four great- grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Helen White Fletcher died Friday, March 28, 1997 at Sabal Palms Health Care Center, Largo, Fla.
She was the daughter of Fayette M. White and Jacka Snider White of Marion. A graduate of Marion High School and Marion College, her first adult employment was as a teacher at Lindamood School.
Surviving are her husband, Arthur E. Fletcher, Largo, Fla.; two sisters, Eleanor Tilley, Richmond, and Dr. Carolyn Rogers, Marion.

Rev. John Eugene James Grant Floyd Sr., age 89, of Mt. Holly, N.C., died Thursday, Nov. 21, 1996 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C.
Rev. Floyd was born in Caldwell County, N.C., the son of the late John and Eva Barber Floyd. He was the husband of the late Rose Fisher Floyd and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca Floyd.
He was a retired Freewill Baptist Minister having pastored at Adwolfe Freewill Baptist Church in Marion, First Freewill Baptist Church in Marion, N.C., Sea Level Freewill Baptist Church in Sea Level, N.C., Calvary Freewill Baptist Church in Jacksonville, N.C., and Wilmington Freewill Baptist Church, Wilmington, N.C. At the time of his death, he was a member of The Goshen Freewill Baptist Church in Mt. Holly, N.C.

Bonnie Elizabeth McKinnon Foster, age 71, died Thursday, May 15, 1997 in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.
Mrs. Foster was a native of Wythe County, but had lived most of her life in Smyth County. She was a much loved mother and grandmother and will be sadly missed by her family.

Patrick P. Foti, age 80, died Monday, April 17, 2000 in Maple Grove Retirement Home in Chilhowie.
Mr. Foti was a veteran of the United States Army having served in World War II and received a Purple Heart and three Battle Stars.
Surviving are one son, Darrell Foti of New Jersey; two sisters, Mrs. H.B. (Dorothy) Robinson, and Mrs. M.C. (Barbara) Hinson, both of Seven Mile Ford; several nieces and nephews.

O.S. (Sherrill) Foster, age 68, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, July 9, 1997 at a Salem hospital.
A native of Smyth County, he graduated from Marion High School, served in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserve, and was a graduate of National Business College. He served in the Virginia State Police as a trooper from 1950-1965, and served as Roanoke County Sheriff for five consecutive elected terms from 1967-1987.
An active member of North Roanoke Baptist Church since 1958, he served as a deacon, taught Sunday School, sang in the Singing Saints Choir, served on numerous committees and was awarded "Father of the Year for Religious Activities" in 1996.
Mr. Foster was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Mary "Jackie" Foster; three brothers and two sisters.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Ron Paige; three sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Cindy Foster, Jeff Foster and Tom and LeAnne Foster, all of Roanoke; four grandchildren, Allison Paige, Scott Foster, Kelly Foster and Logan Foster; a sister, Margaret Davidson of Marion; a beloved friend, Maxine Warren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 12, at 11 a.m. in North Roanoke Baptist Church with Dr. Darryl G. Crim officiating. Interment followed in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park with the U.S. Flag ceremony by VFW Post #1264 and the Roanoke County Sheriff's Department.

She was born September 4, 1954 in Carroll County and was preceded in death by her father, William Frazier Carter. She was a member of Cedar Hill Methodist Church and a member of the American Saddlebred Association. She is survived by her husband, John S. Lucille Delp Fox, age 87, widow of Harold D. Fox, died Thursday, Dec. 5, 1996 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was an active member of the Mount Zion United Methodist Church and was a nurse at Richardson's Clinic for 39 years.
She is survived by one daughter, Marivene Bryant Slemp of Marion; two sisters, Edith Cassell of Galax, and Virginia Perrino of Elk Creek; one brother, Perk Delp of Independence; two grandchildren, Susan Bryant Massey of Inman, S.C., and Nancy Bryant Parker of Roanoke; four great-grandchildren, Brooke Massey, Michael Massey, Katherine Massey, and Ryan Parker; several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Martin Nicholas (Nick) Fox of Ennice, N.C., passed away April 13, 2000, in the Watauga Medical Center in Boone, N.C. Mr. Fox was born in Akron, Ohio to Frank W. Fox and Rhea M. Fox. He attended Public Schools there. He graduated from West High School and graduated with honors from Yale University in 1942. During WWII, he was a Lt. Sn. Grade in the Lighterthon Air Division of the U.S. Navy. He is survived by his wife, Claire E. Jesse G. Francis Jr., of Marion, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 1996 in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Nashville, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his father, Jesse G. Francis Sr., and was of the Christian faith.
Mr. Francis was a native of Baltimore, Md., and had been living in Marion for the past six years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in Vietnam. He was employed with Kmart of Wytheville.
Survivors include his wife, Cassandra L. Francis, Marion; his mother, Goldie Francis, Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Ann Weitzel and Doris Smullin, both of Baltimore, Md.; many nieces and nephews and one greatnephew.

Robert Edward Freeman Sr., age 67, died Thursday, Nov. 26, 1998 in Powhatan.
Mr. Freeman was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served in the United States Army. He was a retired truck driver for the U.S. Postal Service.

Weaver "Conrad" French, age 69, of Tannersville, died Thursday, June 12, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
He worked for the United States Postal Service for 43 years, where he was a mail carrier in the Rich Valley area. He was a lifetime member of the Saltville Rescue Squad, a charter member of the Tannersville Rescue Squad, past master of Rich Valley Masonic Lodge No. 172 and past patron of the Saltville Eastern Star.

He attended Valley View Baptist Church.

Josephine Hopkins Frye, age 94, of Saltville, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999 in Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
Mrs. Frye was the oldest member of McCready United Methodist Church and the widow of Walter Gray Frye.
Surviving are three sons, George Frye of Glade Spring, Asher L. Frye of Indianapolis, Ind., and Ronnie Frye of Duncan, S.C.; three daughters, Eunice Weaver of Daleville, Joann Bordwine of Chilhowie, and Vera Bernadean Rivera of Marion; one sister, Katherine Reel of Marion; 23 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; several greatgreat-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Gladys Anna Robinson Frye, age 91, of Glade Spring, died Sunday, July 25, 1999 in Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
Mrs. Frye was the widow of Thomas J. Frye Sr., and a member of the Friendship Baptist Church.
Surviving are one son, Thomas J. Frye Jr., Gray, Tenn.; three daughters, Betty A. DeBusk and Mary G. Taylor, both of Glade Spring, and Janet F. Pastros of Brinkow, Md.; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great- great-grandchild.

Margaret C. Frye, age 92, died Thursday, June 3, 1999 at the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
Mrs. Frye was a member of the Madam Russell Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, L. Early Frye.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Kitty Pritchard and David Pritchard, Fort Thomas, Ky.; two grandsons, David Charles Pritchard and Lee Allan Pritchard; several nieces and nephews.

TSgt. Bascom H. "Sam" Frye (USAF Ret), age 60, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999 in San Antonio, Texas.
Mr. Frye was born in Saltville and lived in Duncan, S.C., before moving to Texas.
He is survived by his wife, Lillie Frye; three sons, Larry A. Frye, Joe H. Frye and Gary Lee Frye; two grandchildren, Andrew Jasper Roberts, Chase and Samantha Frye; his mother, Josephine Frye, Saltville; three brothers, George Frye, Asher Frye and Ronnie Frye; three sisters, Eunice Weaver, Bernadine and Joanne Frye.
Funeral services will be held today, Oct. 20, at noon at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home Chapel with interment in Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. Full military honors will be performed.

He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, a veteran of World War II and a retired employee of W&L Construction Co.

Karen Griffitts Funk, age 39, died Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998 in the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville after a long illness. She was employed at Southwestern State Hospital with 16 years of service.
Surviving are one son, Chad E. Funk of Atkins; her father and mother, Frank D. and Thelma Cannon Griffitts of Chilhowie; one sister, Gail Griffitts of Chilhowie; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Memorial services will be held today, Aug. 8, at 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. A private burial will be held at a later date. JAMES D. "JIM" FRYE, age 77, of Wytheville, Virginia, died Sunday, January 7, 2001, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late James Frank and Ersie Ann Dunford Frye and attended Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. He was a former member of the Piney Ruritan Club and a member of the Pulaski V.F.W. Post # 1184 and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy R. Frye, a sister, Polly Dunford and four brothers, Sam, Franklin, Harry and Kenneth Frye. He is survived by: his wife - Hettie "Dab" Aker Frye of the home; a son - Eddie B. Frye of Wytheville, VA; three sisters - Shirley Clark of Max Meadows, Susie Viars of Draper, VA, and Bonnie Funk of Rt. 3, Wytheville, VA; two brothers - Leonard Clark Frye and Cloyd McKinley, both of Rt. 3, Wytheville, VA; special friends - Tom Dewey Frye and Leg Aker, both of Rt. 3, Wytheville, VA; mother-in-law - Willie Akers and brother-in-law - Guy D. Akers. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Allen Lewis Frye, age 80, of Saltville, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mr. Frye was a member of Madam Russell United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of William King Masonic Lodge 227, past patron of Saltville Chapter 151 of OES, past grand patron of the Grand Chapter of Virginia OES and General Grand Chapter committee appointment of OES. He was a member of Saltville-Rich Valley Lions Club, past district governor of the Lions Club and was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow Award.
Surviving are his wife, Hazel Clear Frye; one brother, Marvin Frye of Pittsburgh, Penn.; three sisters, Louise Bridges of Morgantown, W.Va., Christine Grogg of San Diego, Calif., and Charlotte Brinkley of Gray, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews.

Wesley H. Frye of Portsmouth died Wednesday, March 15, 2000.
Mr. Frye was born July 30, 1926. He was a native of Saltville. He was the owner of Wes Frye Auto & Van Repair.
Surviving are three children, Brenda Frye and Charles Frye, both of Portsmouth, and Donna Davis, Windsor; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted today, March 18, at 11 a.m. in Biltmore Baptist Church in Portsmouth conducted by the Rev. Frye. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society.

Elizabeth Price Frye, age 81, of Saltville, died Sunday, June 18, 2000 at the Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Frye was a member of the Riverview Presbyterian Church where she served as Elder and Sunday School teacher. She was a member of the Saltville Chapter Order of Eastern Star. She was a retired nurse and a graduate of the first Smyth County Vocational School of Practical Nursing Class, and served on the Saltville Medical Clinic Board of Directors for several years. She belonged to various other civic and community organizations.
Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Charles Andrew Frye Sr.; one son, Charles A. Frye Jr., Broadford; two daughters, Mrs. Tom (Judy) Hess, Saltville, and Mrs. Jim (Toby) Cook, Abingdon; one sister, Alice Austin, Saltville; one brother, James Greer, Saltville; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; two sons-in-law, Tom Hess and Jim Cook; one daughter-in-law, Lisa Frye; a special friend and neighbor, David Heldreth.

Maj. Montgomery S. "Boo" Frye, U.S. Army, Ret., age 68, died Saturday, June 20, 1998 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
He was a veteran of the Korean and the Vietnam Wars serving with the 5th Special Forces and the 82nd Airborne Division, with 22 years of service. He received numerous medals, including First Oak Leaf Cluster Medals, Bronze Star Medals for Heroism, National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, Korean Service Medal, Parachute Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Air Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal.
He was of the Protestant faith, a member of the Special Forces Association, the VFW Post No. 6975 of Bristol, Tenn., William King Lodge No. 227, Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons in Virginia, Lynn Commandery No. 9, and the Order of the Eastern Star No. 151.
Mr. Frye was an active member of the community, participating in the Neighborhood Watch Program, Adopt a Highway Program and Coordinator of Saltville Unit of the American Red Cross Bloodmobile.
Survivors include his wife, Melba "Bobbie" Rogers Frye; one daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Roscoe Call, Saltville; three sons, Steve Frye and Monty Frye, both of Saltville, and Robert Frye, Bluff City, Tenn.; three daughters-in-law, Kathy Frye, Teresa Frye and Rita Frye; two brothers, Curtis Frye and Dewey Frye, both of Sessor, Ill.; one sister, Virginia Allison, Saltville; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was the widow of Sam Funk.
She was born Dec. 5, 1915, in Grayson County to Padgett and Clara Wheeler Webb.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Anne Boyer of Rocky Mount, N.C.; a sister, Ruth Horton of Jamestown, N.D.; two granddaughters; a grandson; and six great-grandchildren.
