Eads
Mrs. Ethel Hutton Eads, age 94, departed this life in the presence of her loved ones on May 5, 1998 at her home in Marion, VA. Mrs. Eads was born in Smyth Co. on February 24, 1904.
Mrs. Eads was a member of the Centenary Methodist Church, where she played the piano. Later, she changed her membership to the Grace United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Gordon Eads, one grandson and one great grandson.
Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Elizabeth Eads Turner, Roanoke, VA and Evelyn Eads and Roby Paul Yarber of Marion, VA; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Thomas O. and Betty Eads of Pearisburg, VA, William E. and India Eads of Ravenna, OH and G. Darrell Eads of Marion, VA; a special friend Dorothy Cline; 17 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, May 8 at 11:00 a.m. at the Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve Huttin, Rev. Otis Barker and Rev. George Mowrey officiating. Burial followed in the Riverside Cemetery. Barnett's Funeral Home of Marion served the Eads family.
Earles
Fred Neal Earles, age 69, of Rural Retreat, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999 in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Mr. Earles was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Carl Brown and Amma Amanda Pickle Earles. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Bell Barbery Earles.
Surviving are his wife, Helen Nichols Earles, of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Dave and Jami Earles, Rural Retreat; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathi and Sam Akers, Rural Retreat, and Sherry and Carter Marshall Jr., Sugar Grove; three granddaughters and spouses: Amanda and Chad Walk, Sandi and Sean Burlarley, and Miranda Marshall; one brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Dorothy Earles, Elkton, Md.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 10, at 2 p.m. at the Rural Retreat Pentecostal Holiness Church with Pastor Roger Crigger officiating. Interment followed in the Mountain View Cemetery in Rural Retreat. The family requests that those who prefer, may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Volunteer Emergency Services or to the Rural Retreat Pentecostal Holiness Church Building Fund.

HELEN NICHOLS EARLES, age 70 of Sugar Grove, Virginia, died Monday January 22, 2001, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Ira C. and Artie A. Wright Nichols. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred N. Earles. she is survived by: a sister - Evelyn Stephenson of Rural Retreat, VA; two brothers - Edgar Nichols of Independence, VA and Lloyd Nichols of Rural Retreat, VA; a niece and spouse - Karen and Jerry Snider of Wytheville, VA; seven nephews and spouse - Charles Lewis Nichols of Rural Retreat, VA, Eddie and Carol Nichols of Mt. Airy, NC, Ronald Lee Nichols, Kenneth James Nichols, Doug Nichols, Scott Nichols all of Rural Retreat, Roger Nichols of Mt. Airy, NC; two great-nieces, two great-nephews and one great-great nephew also survive.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 24, 2001, at 2:00 p.m. at the Fairview Methodist Church with the Rev. Tony Perry officiating. Interment will follow in the Fariview Methodist Cemetery. Easter
Curtis Harold Easter, 79, of Cana, husband of Lelia Akers Easter, died at the Northern Hospital of Surry County, N.C., Saturday afternoon, March 24, 2001.
He was born April 28, 1921, in Carroll County to the late Curtis Cameron and Bertha Leonard Easter.
He was a retired orchard farmer and school bus driver. He restored antique automobiles and frequently drove them in local parades.
He served in the United States Army during W.W.II attaining the grade of staff sergeant. He participated in many battles including The Battle of the Bulge and was a driver on The Red Ball Express.
He received many citations including the Purple Heart with Custer, the Bronze Star Medal and four Battle Stars.
He was a life time member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and helped to organize The Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge Veteran Organization.
He was a very active member of Paul's Creek Baptist Church. He had many friends and "adopted" sons and daughters whom he loved greatly.
He was very appreciative of their love in return.
Survivors include his wife, Leila Akers Easter of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Curtis H. Jr., and Anita Easter of Lexington, S.C.; a grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Shawn and Suzanne Easter of Cary, Ill.; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Gina and Ken Holmes of Columbia, S.C.; one great-granddaughter, Taylor Easter of Cary, Ill.; one great- grandson, Jackson Holmes of Columbia, S.C.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ules and Genevieve Easter of Mount Airy, N.C., and Clyde and Ethel Easter of Fancy Gap; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held Tuesday at Paul''s Creek Baptist Church with burial in the Rocky Ford United Church of Christ Cemetery. The Revs. Tony Holder and Verlon Combs officiated.

Lee Eastridge, 83, resident of Rt 1, Woodlawn, died in a local hospital sunday 22 Jan 1961. He had been ill for some time.
Mr Eastridge is survived by 14 children, 36 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, and 1 gt- gt-grandchild.
Funeral services were held at the Vaughan Guynn Chapel on Tuesday conducted by Rev Lonnie P Shaw , Rev Lee Young, and Rev R Irvin Smith.
Interment was in the Bryant Cemetery.
Eastridge
Doris June Eastridge, age 59, of Saltville, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998 at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a member of Valley View Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include her husband, Jack Eastridge; two sons, Dennis Eastridge, Nashville, Tenn., and Daniel Eastridge, Saltville; one brother, John Cannon, Lynchburg; two sisters, Joan Woodward, Lynchburg, and Norma Kestner, Columbia, S.C.; five grandchildren; one godson, Steve Bobo.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, at D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Banks officiating. Burial followed in the Forest Hills Cemetery.

A memorial service for Dewey P. Eastridge, 75, of Partlow will be held at 11 a.m.Tuesday at Rehoboth United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kathleen Work and his cousin the Rev. Roby Harold Eastridge officiating. Burial will follow the service.
The family will receive friends an hour before the service.
Mr. Eastridge died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Henrico Doctor's Hospital in Richmond. Born in Creston, N.C., Mr. Eastridge retired as sales manager of Stohlman Oldsmobile in Alexandria. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Amphibious Corps in the Pacific Theater. Among his decorations and awards are the Asiatic Pacific theater medal with three bronze stars, a Victory medal, Army Occupation medal and Philippine Liberation medal. A member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church, he was a former member of the V.F.W. Post in Arlington. Survivors include his wife, Lorene S. Eastridge;a daughter, Vicki Lee Eastridge of Partlow, three sisters, Grace E. Knight of Spotsylvania, Edith E. Payne of Richmond, and Blanche E. Scherbarth of Milwaukee, Wis. John David Eastridge, age 74, of Glade Spring, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000 at the McVey's Rest Home in Abingdon.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and retired from Norfolk & Southern Railroad.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter; two brothers; two sisters; one grandson; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were conducted Thursday, March 9, at 2 p.m. at the Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring with the Rev. Shirley Carter officiating. Military rites were conducted by the Saltville VFW Post #7328 "Hardy Roberts."

A funeral for Mamie Virginia Woodruff Eastridge, 79, of Spotsylvania County, Virginia, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Rehoboth United Methodist Church in Beaverdam, with Rev. Kathleen Work officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Found & Sons Funeral Home, Fredericksburg. Mrs. Eastridge died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at her home.
She was a member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church, where she was in the church choir and member of the United Methodist Women.
She was the widow of William C. Eastridge.
Survivors include two daughters, Sherry L. Long of Sterling and Tina R. Henry of Spotsylvania; two sons, Gerald C. Eastridge of Sterling and Robert C. Eastridge of Fairfax; three sisters, Ruby Rutherford and Fern Mullis, both of West Jefferson, NC, and Ruth Dillard of Taylorsville, NC; 13 grandchildren,; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was also the mother of the late W. Alton Eastridge.

Mamie was born in Idlewild, NC and married in Trade, TN.
Note: In order to be genealogically correct, Robert C. Eastridge should be described as a stepson and 4 of the grandchildren and 14 of the great grandchildren are from that same step family.

Sarah Ann Eblen, age 74, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 1996 in Smyth County Community Hospital. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Marion and was a graduate of Emory & Henry College.
She was the daughter of the late Rev. S.N. and Mae Garst Eblen.
She is survived by two sisters, Ruby E. Hollingsworth of Cambridge, Minn., and Joyce E. Cornett of Marion; one brother, J. Paul Eblen of Lynchburg; one sister-in-law, Thelma B. Eblen of Salem; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 15, at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Marion with Dr. J.N. Howard officiating. Burial was in Rose Lawn Cemetery. John Paul Eblen, age 62, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 1997 at his home in Lynchburg.
Mr. Eblen was born on Nov. 24, 1935 in Wytheville, the son of the late Samuel and Lila Garst Eblen. He graduated in 1957 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute where he attended on a basketball scholarship. He retired from the Internal Revenue Service with over 34 years of service. He was a member of the Hokie Club and the Exchange Club of Lynchburg, and was an avid golfer.
Mr. Eblen was a member of the Timberlake United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by one brother, Philip Eblen, and one sister, Sarah Eblen.
He is survived by his loving wife, Virginia Brumfield Eblen; two sons, John Paul Eblen Jr. and his wife Carmen of Newbury Park., Calif., and Steven Eblen and wife Pam of Saugus, Mass.; one stepdaughter, Maxine Clements and husband Tommy of Madison Heights; two stepsons, Allen Evans and wife Penny and Leonard Evans, all of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two sisters, Ruby Hollingsworth and husband Evan of Cambridge, Minn., and Joyce Cornette of Marion; five grandchildren: Andrew Clements, Brenda Clements, Brad Warner, Michelle Evans and Bethany Evans.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 2, 1997 at the Whitten Timberlake Chapel with Rev. James M. Tongue officiating. Burial was in the Fort Hill Memory Park, Lynchburg. Leonard Edelstein, 76, was remembered at a future date.
Mr. Edelstein was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. He graduated cum laude from the West Coast University in Los Angeles, Calif., the College of Engineering. He graduated from the Hemphill Diesel School and the National School of Diesel Automotive and Allied Mechanics. He held his professional engineering license for the state of Colorado for many years. He retired in 1988 from Martin Marietta Company in Washington, D.C. He was a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
He is survived by his wife, June; a daughter, Heidi; a son, Ray and wife, Maria; and three grandsons, Eric, Keith and Bryan.

Robert "Sleepy" Edmisten, age 77, of Chilhowie, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999 in Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
He is survived by one daughter, Nancy E. Fields of Chilhowie; two sons, Robert C. Edmisten and James E. Edmisten, both of Marion; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his former wife, Carrie Church Edmisten.

Hazel Bishop Edmiston, age 85, died Friday, May 1, 1998 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was the widow of George Burton Edmiston. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Claiborne and Sarah Malissa Duncan Bishop. She was a member of the Mountain View United Methodist Church where she served as a church treasurer for 45 years before her retirement in 1997. She was a former employee of Greever's Drug Store.
Survivors include one son, Robert Thomas Edmiston, Johnson City, Tenn.; one brother, James T. Bishop, Chilhowie; two sisters, Ruth B. Clark, Rich Valley, and Dorothy B. MacRae, Dickson, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews; several greatnieces and nephews.

He was a minister of the United Pentecostal Church International and a retired carpenter.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667. He was a farmer and was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Eller Edmiston.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, John Edgar and Eileen Bruce Edmiston, Melbourne, Fla.; one daughter, Joyce Ann Edmiston, Marion; a brother, Joe Edmiston, Marion; his twin brother, James W. Edward Eugene "Eddie" Edmiston, age 43, formerly of Chilhowie, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 1996 at his home in Galax.
He was a lifelong resident of Chilhowie and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Gertrude Collins Edmiston.
Survivors include his mother, Shirley Hill Rider, Lexington, N.C.; one brother, John D. "Gig" Edmiston, Marion; one great-aunt, Mrs. John Collins, Chilhowie; a special friend, Debbie Thomas, Marion; several cousins.

WARREN ELMER EDMONDS, age 76, of Brim Lane, Max Meadows, Virginia, died Thursday, November 23, 2000 in the Pulaski Community Hospital. He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late David Franklin "Luther" Edwards and Lucy Jane Spencer Edmonds. He was retired from the Town of Pulaski and was preceded in death by eight sisters, Fannie Edmonds Crigger, Pearl Edmonds, Grace Edmonds, Minnie Edmonds Peak, Maggie Edmonds Cook, Martha Edmonds Stilwell, Dolly Ella Edmonds and Emma Edmonds. He is survived by: a sister - Dorothy Edmonds of the Patterson Community; an aunt - Mrs. Ethel Branscome of the Patterson Community; many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Margaret Irene Edmondson, age 72, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000 at her home in Friendship community.
Ms. Edmondson was born in Radford, a daughter of the late Isaac and Margaret Cole Edmondson. She had lived in the Friendship community for the past 50 years. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church where she was a song leader, teacher, WMU leader, librarian and held many other positions. She was employed as a seamstress for more than 30 years with Harwood Manufacturing Co. She was preceded in death by two brothers, William C. and Charles E. Edmondson.
Surviving are two brothers, James R. Edmondson of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Roy H. Edmondson of Bel Air, Md.; several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Edwards was preceded in death by her father and mother, James and Mary Robinson Mabe and two brothers, Ernest Mabe and Pete Mabe.
She is survived by two daughters, Regina Hatcher of Pennsylvania and Betty Edwards of Woodlawn; three sons, Charles Hayes and James Hayes, both of North Carolina, and John Hayes of Pulaski; three sisters, Dorothy Martin of Roanoke, Bertha Carson of Marion, and Helen Coley of Wytheville; four brothers, Charles Mabe of Pennsylvania, J.C. Mabe of New York, Hurley "June" Mabe of Marion, and Bill Mabe of Cripple Creek; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 25, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Willard Eversole officiating. Burial followed in Attoway Cemetery in Marion.

Arnold Burns Edwards Sr., age 78, of Rural Retreat, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000 in Wythe County Community Hospital.
Mr. Edwards was born in Dickenson County, the son of the late Jona and Virgie Owens Edwards. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and had worked faithfully for almost 40 years as part owner and proprietor of Edwards Radio, TV Sales & Service in Rural Retreat.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, June Miller Edwards and his second wife, Betty Lou Crider Edwards.
He is survived by one daughter, Treasa Kay Mills of Wytheville; two sons, Tim Edwards and Arnold B. Edwards Jr., both of Rural Retreat; two grandchildren, Joshua James Blizzard and Amelia Ann Blizzard; one great-grandchild, Lance Gregory Blizzard; one sister, Flora E. Owens, Rural Retreat; two brothers, Leamon Edwards of Rural Retreat, and Claude Edwards of Dublin.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 3, at 2 p.m. at the Sharon Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Hoyle and Pastor Edward Schaack officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with graveside military rites being conducted by Marion VFW Post 4667. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time. He was born Feb. 6, 1941, in North Carolina to James L. Edwards and Judy Quesenberry Edwards.

Mr. Eggers was born in Watauga County to Roy and Maude South Eggers. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a decorated veteran. He served as a deacon at New River Baptist Church where he was a member.

Mrs. Eggers was born in Rock Creek, N.C., a daughter of the late James and Janie Roark Potter, and lived in Damascus most of her life.
She was the widow of the Rev. I. Blaine Eggers and a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church in Glade Spring. She was also preceded in death by three brothers.

Rev. I. Blaine Eggers, age 79, died Friday, Dec. 20, 1996 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. He was a native of the Creston, N.C., area and was a member of the Pleasant View Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jackie Dean Eggers of Marion.
He had served as a Baptist pastor for the past 58 years at 17 different churches, including Cleghorn Valley Baptist Church, and had most recently pastored at Pleasant View Baptist Church in Widener's Valley for 40 years and Denton's Valley Baptist Church in Abingdon for 41 years.
He is survived by his wife, Vada Eggers; two daughters and sons-in-law, Bert and Brenda Snodgrass and Dennis and Lavone Widener, both of Damascus; three grandsons, Scottie Widener, Travis Dyson and Brent Dyson; one great-grandson, Tyler Widener; one granddaughter-in-law, Robin Widener; two sisters, Lois Lewis of Creston, N.C., and Mary Grace South of North Wilkesboro, N.C.; a special niece, Louise Hurd and several other nieces and nephews.

Robert Eugene "Bob" Eller, age 60, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999 at his home in Marion.
Mr. Eller was of the Baptist faith. He played football for Virginia Tech and was active in the Smyth County 4H program. He worked for Brunswick, American Furniture, Virginia State Agriculture Department and Bristol Compressors. He was also a farmer and enjoyed working with draft horses.

She received her teaching degree from Radford College and taught in the Atkins school where she was known by her students as Ms. Elsie. She was a member of the Grace Christian Fellowship in Seven Mile Ford.

Arvil Dale (Jim) Ellis, 63, of Windy Ridge Rd. North Wilkesboro, died Saturday, March 18, 2000 at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Mr Ellis was born May 13, 1936, in Wilkes County to Millard and Lura Belle Pike Ellis. He was retired from the Air Force as a Senior Master Sergeant. Surviving are his wife, Regina Legrend Ellis, two sons, James Arvil Ellis of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Patrick Dale Ellis of Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, Ala. three brothers, Robert Ellis, Bill Ellis, and Floyd Ellis, all of North Wilkesboro; one sister, Faye Reeves of North Wilkesboro; two half-sisters, Charmey Cleary and Isadore Bell, both of North Wilkesboro; and one grandchild.

Howard Jackson Ellison Jr., age 65, died Friday, March 17, 2000 at his home in Rural Retreat.
Mr. Ellison was born on Jan. 29, 1935 to the late Howard J. Sr. and Mabel Heldreth Ellison. He was a disabled veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a member of the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church. He was also an avid gardener and bass fisherman.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Carolyn Ayers Ellison; one son and daughter-in-law, Howard J. III and Andrea H. Ellison, Pearisburg; one sister, Helen E. Jane P. Emmons, 69, widow of John F. Emmons, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997 in Greenville, Ohio.
She was born in Smyth County to the late Reese and Mattie Goodman Coley. She was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.
She worked for many years as a waitress and was later the co-owner and operator of Brock's Restaurant in Greenville. She was a member of the Trinity Weslyn Church.
Survivors include one stepson, Hollis Davis, Crossville, Tenn.; one step-grandchild, and one step-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews including Virginia Owens of Groseclose.
Graveside services will be held today, March 29, at 2 p.m. at the Round Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Edward Schaack officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until time of service at Barnett's Funeral Chapel.

Louis Ralph Eremita, 53, was remembered at memorial services held May 16 at Glendale Springs Presbyterian Church. Rev. Phillip Pogue, Rev. Peter Parrish and Holden Bare officiated.
Mr. Eremita was born in Bronx, N.Y. to Dominick Eremita and Mary Ciavolella Eremita. He was a silver smith. He served in the United States Marines and served in Vietnam.
He is survived by his wife, Lesa Miller Eremita of the home; a daughter, Jessica Eremita, Jefferson; his mother, Mary Eremita, New York; two brothers, John Eremita, New York, and Mike Eremita, Connecticut; a sister, Marie Lagana, New York; a grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Charles William Ergenbright, age 82, of Staunton, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000 in the Augusta Medical Center, Fishersville.
Mr. Ergenbright was born on June 1, 1917, in Augusta County, the son of the late George Pittman and Iva Mae (Greiner) Ergenbright.
He was a U.S. Army veteran. Prior to retiring, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 25 years, serving much of the time as a window clerk at Woodrum Station.
Mr. Ergenbright was a member of Marquis Memorial United Methodist Church, the Benny Webb Bible Class, and an active member of the United Methodist Men's Club. He was a member of Marquis Memorial United Methodist Church Administrative Board. He was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard G. Ergenbright, John Edward Ergenright, and Robert Franklin Ergenbright; a sister, Edna Mae Ergenbright; and a granddaughter, Donna Lynn Ergenbright.
Survivors include his wife, Nellie Jane (Clatterbaugh) Ergenbright, to whom he was married on Nov. 23, 1940; three sons and daughters-in-law, Roger Wayne and Patty Ergenbright of Verona, Gene Raymond and Carol Ergenbright of Staunton, and Joe David and Faye Ergenbright of Raphine; three daughters and sons-in-law, Lindy Lou and Marion Gough of Swoope, Bonnie Gail and Buddy Thomas of Fishersville, and Sharon Sue and Mac Buchanan of Saltville; one brother, Harold Benton Ergenbright of Staunton; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Charles Lee Ernest, age 70, died Monday, Aug. 17, 1998 at his home in Saltville.
Mr. Ernest was the son of the late John and Hallie Ernest. He was a member of the Saltville Fire Department, the Saltville Rescue Squad and the Saltville-Rich Valley Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, Kansas L. Ernest of Saltville; one daughter, Carol Martin of Chilhowie; four sons: David Ernest and Michael Ernest, both of Marion, Larry Ernest of Spokane, Wash., and Charles Ernest Jr., of Greensboro, N.C.; two stepdaughters, Peggy DeBord and Dollie Carter, both of Saltville; two stepsons, John W. Davidson of Martinsville, and Danny Davidson of Manassas; seven grandchildren; 15 step- grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 20, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Bobby Briggs officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.

JOHN SANDERS ETTER, age 81 of Rural Retreat, Virginia, died Sunday January 21, 2001, in the Smyth County Community Hospital. He was born in Wythe County, Virginia (the west fork of Reed Creek), the son of the late Guy S. and Ada Blackard Etter. Mr. Etter was a well known Wythe County farmer, a member of the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church, a combat veteran of the U.S. Army, WW II and a member of the Rural Retreat American Legion Post # 229. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl Cassell Etter and one sister, Lucille Newman. He is survived by: one son and daughter-in-law - Sandy and Debra Etter of Tazewell, Virginia; one grandson - Stewart Sanders Etter; one granddaughter - Sarah Katheryn Etter; two sisters - Verna Ager of Wytheville, VA and Jessie Etter of Rural Retreat, VA; two brothers - Col. Hal G. Etter of Helotes, Texas and Fred Etter of Rural Retreat, VA; special niece - Lisa Etter Thompson of Rural Retreat, VA; special friend - Blair Whitt of Wytheville, VA and several other nieces and nephews also survive.

John G. Evans, age 81, of Princeton, W.Va., formerly of Superior, died Monday, Oct. 19, 1998 at the Princeton Community Hospital.
Mr. Evans was born Feb. 23, 1917 in Seven Mile Ford, the son of the late William Washington and Josie Mae Gross Evans. He had worked in the coal industry for more than 45 years retiring in 1980 as mine superintendent and general manager for the Cannelton Coal Company and Industries Inc., Pocahontas Division at Superior, W.Va. He moved to Princeton in 1978.
He was a member of the Hylton Memorial United Methodist Church at Superior. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Jane Evans; five brothers, Tom, Gaylord, Marvin "Carl," Bill and James Evans; and one sister, Emma Evans.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Lillian White Evans; two sons, John Arnold Evans and wife Rita of Niwot, Colo., and Rodney Scott Evans and wife Carrie of Prince George; three daughters, Sharon Byrum and husband Ralph of Grove City, Ohio, Donna L. Justice of Williamson, W.Va., and Beverly K. Evans of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Henry Evans of Marion; three sisters, Elsie Robinson, Marion, Susie Call of Alexandria, and Sadie Nichols of Salem.

Dorothy Ritchie Evans, age 80, of Damascus, died Thursday, June 5, 1997 at her home.
She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and was the widow of Charles R. Evans. She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth M. Evans.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Janice) McConnell of Hickory, N.C.; three sisters, Elizabeth Edmondson of Damascus, Ellen Dunn of Abingdon, and June Nelson of Piney Flats, Tenn.; three grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Katherine Shelton Evans, age 47, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998 at her home in Wytheville.
Mrs. Evans was a former resident of Chilhowie and was a member of Joy Baptist Church in Chilhowie. She was preceded in death by her father, Fred Shelton.
Surviving are her husband, James A. Evans; two sons, James M. Evans and Rodney a. Evans, both of Wytheville; her mother, Mandy Hayden Shelton, Chilhowie; two brothers, Ernest M. Shelton and Roby E. Shelton, both of Bland; four sisters, Elaine Shelton Sparks, Bland, Nancy Shelton Galliher and Francis Shelton Galliher, both of Chilhowie, and Sandra Shelton Eller, Marion; several nieces and nephews.

Robert James Evans, age 82, of Rich Valley, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998 in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.
He was a lifelong farmer in the Rich Valley area and a member of Riverside United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret (Armstrong) Evans; three sons, Bobby S. Evans, Jonesborough, Carl David Evans, Rantoul, Ill., and Walter E. Ms. Jimmie Hanks Everhart, age 52, of 230 Cherry St. Sparta, N.C., died Sunday, June 20, 1999, at her home.
