Dalton
MINNIE LEE SIMPSON DALTON, age 90 of Austinville, Virginia, the Laswell Community, died Wednesday, November 15, 2000 in the Wythe County Community Hospital. she was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Saul and Nancy Jane Dunford Simpson and was preceded in death by her husband, Hobert E. Dalton, a daughter, hazel Lee Dalton, and a son, Hobert Edward Dalton, Jr. She is survived by: three daughters Louise D. Walters of Wytheville, VA, Wanda Faye Sparks of Elkton, MD, and Luva Jane Melton of Grahams Forge; two sons and daughters-in-law - James W. and Darlene Dalton and Guy R. and Janice Dalton, all of Austinville, VA; one sister - Forrest Wright of Max Meadows, twenty-eight grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 19, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel with the Rev. James Black and the Rev. Dallas Jewell officiating. Interment will follow in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Carroll County. Bridget Feigley Dancy, age 29, died Monday, March 23, 1998 at her home in Atkins. Mrs. Dancy was employed with King Pharmaceuticals in Bristol. She is survived by her husband, Tom W. Dancy of Atkins; her father and stepmother, Bart and Sally Feigley of Atkins; her mother, Judy Catron of Marion; one brother and sister-in- law, Drew and Mona Feigley of Marion; one stepsister, Tammy Fisher Blevins of Marion; four stepbrothers, Tony Fisher of Chatham, Travis Fisher of Richmond, Tracy and Trent Fisher, both of Marion; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, David and Helen Dancy of Marion; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Debbie and Danny Reynolds of Marion; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 24, at 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. David Neitch and the Rev. Ron Whitener officiating. Graveside services will be held today, March 25, at 11 a.m. at Thomas Cemetery in Marion.

Dancy
Ethel M. Dancy, age 94, of Meadowview, died Monday, June 22, 19978 in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.
She was a member of Little Flock Holiness Church and a member of Clinchburg Senior Citizens. She was the widow of Alonzo Dancy. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Sidney Snodgrass Sr. and Jimmy Snodgrass, and one sister, Elizabeth Rust.
Survivors include one stepson, Neal Dancy, New York; one stepdaughter, Romona Garrett, Bristol; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 25, in Henderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Stanley officiating. Burial was in Mount Rose Cemetery.
DANIELS
Mrs. Bobbie L. Hoppers Daniels, age 64, of 517 Fox Knob Rd, Sparta, N.C., died Monday, August 2, 1999, at her home. She is survived by one son: Anthony Phillip Daniels of Walnut Cove, N.C.; one grandson: Justin Daniels of Walnut Cove; two uncles: Thomas Landreth of Belborne, Fla., and Richard Landreth of Sparta; and family friend: Roma Kennedy of Sparta. A graveside service will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Landreth Family Cemetary. There will be no visitation at the Funeral Home. Darnell
Jay Edward Darnell, 70, died Friday, Aug. 8, 1997 at his son's home in Kingsport, Tenn. He was a native of Saltville and had lived in Dayton, Ohio for 34 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, William "Will" Darnell and Rosie Broady Darnell. He retired from Dayton Tire & Rubber Company and was a veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include one son, Billy Darnell, Kingsport, Tenn.; three daughters, Debra Sue Totten and Beverly Darnell, both of Saltville, and Jodie Helton, Chilhowie; one brother, Eugene Darnell, Dayton, Ohio; eight grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel. A military graveside service was conducted by Saltville VFW Post 7328 in Mt. Rose Cemetery. Dean Darnell Lansing May 30, 1926 Nov. 14, 2000
Russell Dean Darnell, 74, was remembered at funeral services held Nov. 18 at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Rex Hall and Rev. Jim Francis officiated. Burial was held Nov. 19 in the May Cemetery.
Mr. Darnell was born in Ashe County to Tivis Darnell and Lona Pennington Darnell. He was a carpenter in the building industry. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Tressie Mahaffey Darnell of the home; a daughter, Judy Gregg, Tough Kenamon, Pa.; two brothers, Ford Darnell, Mouth of Wilson, Va., and Dent Darnell, West Jefferson; two sisters, Francis Dolinger and Marie Blevins, both of Jefferson; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Rev. Jones Dent Darnell, 69, was remembered at funeral services held Nov. 25, 2000 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Jim Greer and Rev. Rex Hall officiated. Entombment followed in the Ashelawn Mausoleum of Prayer.

Darnell is survived by his wife, Betty Weaver Darnell; one daughter, Janet Farmer, Millers Creek; one brother, Ford Darnell, Mouth of Wilson, Va.; two sisters, Marie Blevins and Francis Dolinger, both of Jefferson; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Harold Lee Darnell, age 49, of 444 Missy Circle, Concord, NC, died Monday, February 12, 2001, at the North East Medical Center in Concord, NC. He is survived by two daughters: Crimson Darnell Corene and Amber Lee Darnell Michele both of Charlotte, NC; his parents: Worth and Faye Jenkins Darnell of Charlotte, NC; three brothers: Donnie Ray Darnell of Miami, Fla., Thomas Virgil Darnell and Timothy Estel Darnell both of Charlotte, NC; and one sister: Linda Faye Christie of Sanford, Fla. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, February 15, 2001, at 2:00 P.M. at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in the Cranberry Cemetery. Rev. Russell Mabe and Rev. Darnell
Audrey Norman Darnell, age 77, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999 at her home in Marion. Mrs. Darnell was a charter member of the Marion Life Saving Crew Auxiliary and was a magistrate for Smyth County.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow G. Darnell; her parents, Bryant and Nancy Norman; two brothers, Levi B. and Lacy C. Norman.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. James W. (Nancy) Holman, Marion; two sons, Terry Randolph Darnell of Marion, and Richard Michael Darnell of Rock Springs, Wyo.; one sister, June Dillow of Marion; three brothers, Homer Ives Norman of Marion, Ronald Norman and James Norman, both of Lithia, Fla.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a very special niece and nephew, Marcia and Mickey Atwell of Chilhowie; one very special cousin, Imogene Shupe of Bluefield.

Mary Ellen Cullop Dather, age 69, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998 at her home in Sioux City, Iowa after a long illness.
Mrs. Dather was born in Ceres on Jan. 5, 1929 to the late Jessie and Bertie Gray Martin Cullop. She was a member of the Washington Heights Chapel in Sioux City, Iowa. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son and seven brothers: Robert, Jack, Joe, Raymond, Eugene, Everette and Conley Cullop.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth H. Dather Sr. of Sioux City, Iowa; three sons and daughters-in-law, David and Cyndee L. Dather of Milford, Iowa, Kenneth and Susan H. Dather Jr., of Sioux City, Iowa, and Kelli and Vicki Ford of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sheilia G. Ford and Linda and Eric Larsen, all of Sioux City, Iowa, and Pamela and Doug Proffitt of Des Moines, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; four sisters, Katherine Atwell of Saltville, Hazel Hubble of Nebo, Olivene Hall of Marion, and Ida Warner of Rockville, Md.

Daugherty
Brown Noel Daugherty, age 88, of Louisville, Ky., formerly of Princeton, W.Va., died Tuesday, March 30, 1999 in the Norton Audubon Hospital in Louisville, Ky.
Mrs. Daugherty was a retired teacher with the Princeton, W.Va., school system. She was preceded in death by her husband, Adrian Kenneth Daugherty, and two sons, Joseph L. and Jon Adrian Daugherty.
She is survived by two sons, Kenneth N. Daugherty of Louisville, Ky., and George F. Daugherty of Marion; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 2, at 10 a.m. at the Embry-Bosse Funeral Chapel in Louisville, with George F. Daugherty officiating. Interment was held Saturday, April 3, at 1 p.m. at the Monte Vista Park in Bluefield, W.Va., with the Rev. Frank Branson officiating.

Willie Pansy Daugherty, age 77, of Sugar Grove, died Monday, June 16, 1997 in Bristol Regional Medical Center. She had resided most of her life in Sugar Grove where she was a member of the Wharf Hill United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, French and Marietta Keesling; three sons, Johnny, Ronnie and Danny Daugherty.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Fred E. Daugherty, Sugar Grove; one daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Mike Baldwin of Sugar Grove; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Randy and Trish Daugherty, and Rickie Daugherty, all of Sugar Grove; one sister, Jackie DuMond of Tallahassee, Fla.; two brothers, Kelly Keesling of Rural Retreat, and Harold Keesling of Roxboro, N.C.; one granddaughter, Misty Daugherty Crutchfield of Chilhowie; one great-granddaughter, Carly Crutchfield; two step-granddaughters, Heather Baldwin and Jessica Wagoner; one former daughter-in-law, Patsy Doyle of Marion; several nieces and nephews.

Mary Cox Davenport, age 64, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 1997 at her home in Glade Spring. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and attended Laurel United Methodist Church, Damascus.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Clyde Cox Jr., and her second husband, Charles Everett Davenport.
Survivors include three daughters, Joyce Ann Widener, Glade Spring, Linda Taylor, Mountain City, Tenn., and Judy Gentry, Laurel Bloomery, Tenn.; four sisters, Ruth Teaters and Ruby Bosley, both of Chilhowie, Gray Dishman, Glade Spring, and Shirley Gainer, Columbia, Penn.; four brothers, Ben Heath and John Heath, both of Glade Spring, June Heath, Columbia, Penn., and Ed Heath, Chilhowie; seven grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Dennis R. Doss, age 70, of Damascus, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997 in the Wellmont Hospice Center, Bristol, Tenn. Mr. Doss was a son of the late Charles Clifton and Rosa Lee Spriggs Doss. He was a native of Damascus and was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. He was retired from the Damascus Hosiery Mill after 30 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Faye Clark Doss of the home; one daughter, Vickie Doss, Damascus; two sisters, Wanda Doss, Damascus, and Wilma Ballou, Abingdon; one aunt, Yada Rosenbaum, Norfolk; two special friends, Agnes and Gregory Widner, Damascus; a sister-in- law, Pearl Doss, Pulaski; several nieces and nephews.

Bessie Harper Davidson, age 92, widow of Henry Davidson, died Saturday, March 29, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital. She was also preceded in death by her son, Thomas Davidson; her brothers, Arch Harper and Frank Harper; and a sister, Beulah Gilbert. She is survived by one daughter, Dorothy Helton of Marion; one son, Douglas Eugene Davidson of Wytheville; three sisters, Lizzie Smith of Marion, Claire Jennings of Roanoke, and Blanche Maiden of Bristol; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Katrina Parks Davidson, age 28, died Monday, July 13, 1998 in Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Cassandra Davidson.

Lewis Earl Davidson, age 71, of Pulaski, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998. He was born Oct. 11, 1926 in Saltville, the son of the late Soney Davidson and Mabel Olinger Davidson. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Radford, and had been a resident of Pulaski for 44 years.
Mr. Davidson was retired from Southland Life Ins. Co., and worked part time for Continental Western Life and Settlers Life Ins. Co.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Dorothy Robinson Davidson; two sons, Roger L. Davidson and wife Jeanie, Deerfield Beach, Fla., and Allen S. Davidson and wife Martha, Rockingham, N.C.; one grandson, Bradley P. Davidson, Deerfield Beach, Fla.; one granddaughter, Emily M. Davidson, Rockingham, N.C.; two brothers, Bobby Davidson, Saltville, and Irvin Davidson, Newport, Tenn.; two sisters, Mrs. Herbert "Dreama" Warren, Winston-Salem, N.C., and Mrs. David "Norma" Taylor, Martinsville; two aunts, Mrs. Jack Haynes and "Susies," Saltville, and Mrs. Katherine Hawthorne, Bristol, Tenn.; many nephews, nieces, and cousins; three special friends, Melvin Tolbert, Mrs. Margaret Thompson, and Jesse Kerns.

Sanders M. Davidson, age 66, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998 in Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn.
Mr. Davidson was the son of the late Joseph W. and Hazel Sandifer Davidson. For many years, he was an employee of Echols-Sparger & Associates and Dewberry & Davis. He was a member of Marion Baptist Church and past deacon. He was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother.
He is survived by his wife, Texas Farris Davidson of Marion; one daughter, Sandra Davidson Hopkins, Marion; one son, Joseph Bradley Davidson, Marion; one son-in-law, Dr. Phillip C. Hopkins. Marion; one daughter-in-law, Patty Greer Davidson, Marion; five grandchildren: Courtney Hopkins, Chase Hopkins, Ashley Davidson, Benjamin Davidson and Adam Davidson; several nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous friends.

Lelia Mae Lawson Davidson, 73, of Wytheville, Va., died Thursday, March 15, 2001, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 18, at 2 p.m. at the Jubilee Baptist Church with Pastor Kelly Marshall and Pastor Donnie Keller officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany Lutheran Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time. She was born in Cripple Creek, Va., a daughter of the late George W. and Emma Rosenbaum Lawson. She was a member of the Jubilee Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Edward Davidson; two sisters, Pearl Jackson and Ethel Lee Lawson; two brothers, James Lawson and Charles E. Lawson; and a special friend, Mae Bell Thompson.

Pearl Frances Griffey Davidson, age 79, died Friday, March 27, 1998 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mrs. Davidson was a native of Smyth County and had lived most of her life in Glade Spring. She attended Washington Spring United Methodist Church and was the widow of Clint Davidson. Survivors include three sons, Erichus Davidson and Dennis Davidson, both of Glade Spring, and Roger Davidson, Abingdon; one daughter, Freda Lorraine Butler, Glade Spring; four stepdaughters, Helen Stiener, Greensburg, Penn., Juanita Funkhouser, Fisher, W.Va., Evelyn Call, Saltville, and Betty Crosswhite, Elk Ridge, Md.; one brother, Tom Griffey, Dayton, Ohio; five sisters, Ruthey Davis, Dayton, Ohio, Amanda Grant, Edgewood, Md., Delcie Hess, Morrison, Tenn., Eula Boss, Hopkinsville, Ky., and Lorene Richardson, Forest Hill, Md.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Margaret Foster Davidson, age 72, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997 in the Francis Marion Manor. Mrs. Davidson worked at Harwood for 35 years, and she attended the Falling Water Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas M. Davidson. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Mike Anderson, Marion; four special friends: Evelyn Boyette, Fausto Obregon, Debbie Stamper and Dr. Samuel Vernon; several nieces and nephews.

William Martin "Bud" Davidson, age 90, of Saltville, died Thursday, Dec. 5, 1996 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Charles Maiden. He was a lifelong farmer in the Beaver Creek area. He was a retired employee of Sprague & Henwood and a member of Mountain View Church of God, New Quarry.

Texas Farris Davidson, age 63, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998 at her home in Marion. Mrs. Davidson was a member of the Marion Baptist Church and member of the Rebekah Sunday School class. She was a retired LPN after 15 years of service with Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Davidson was preceded in death by her husband, Sanders M. Davidson and one brother, William Hudson.

Ruby Meadows Davis, 82, of Lewistown, Pa., formerly of Bland County, died Friday, July 21, 2000, at Lewistown, Pa. She was born June 12, 1918, in Bland County to Albert T. Meadows and Laura Millirona Meadows.
She was the widow of Norma H. Davis.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Irene and Ralph Roope of Pulaski, Faye and David Webb of Lewistown and Eunice and Frank Bartlett of Galax; two sisters, Audrey Nuckolls of Pulaski and Juanita Melton of Dublin; a brother, Miller C. Meadows of Dublin; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mollie Garvey Davis was born April 5, 1873. She departed this life September 9, 1957 at the age of 84. She was married to James Morgan Davis, October 23, 1889. To this union 11 children were born. Four preceeded her in death. The living are Mrs. Guy Warren, Detroit, Mich; John W. Davis, Flint, Mich; Mrs. John R. Williams, Grassy Creek; Mrs. Everett Grace, West Grove, PA; Mrs. Earl Segraves, Perryville, MD; Garnett Davis, Fries, VA; Bryce Davis, West Grove, PA. Eighteen grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Charlie McMillan, of Landenberg, PA also survives. Mrs. Davis was converted in early life and joined the New River Baptist church of which she remained a member until death. Her life was like an open book. Her fine Christian influence will live on in the lives of these fine children and grandchildren.

Belva W. Davis, 83, went to be with our Lord on March 2, 2001. She was born April 8, 1917, in Laurel Fork and lived in Hillsville until 2000.
She owned and operated the Merlene Beauty Salon in Hillsville for a number of years. She was a member of the Hillsville United Methodist Church.
She was the daughter of the late Lester and Della Webb and the stepdaughter of the late Hobert Willard. She was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Davis; a brother, Linford Willard; and a sister, Pauline W. Hamrick.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, John Michael and Dora Davis Wirtz; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda D. and Rod Gray of Charlestown, N.H.; three sisters, Ollie W. Sharp of Hillsville, Elsie W. Banks of Stuart and Trudy W. Cloud of Laurel Fork; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Robert Neil Davis, age 100, formerly of Tazewell and Marion, died Friday, Aug. 27, 1999 at Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
Mr. Davis was born Nov. 9, 1898 in Buchanan County, the son of the late Alfred and Delilah Gilbert Davis, Buchanan County natives.
He was known to many as "Shorty" and was the last of his immediate family. He was a farmer for most of his life and had lived in Grundy, Berwind, Tazewell, Chilhowie and Marion. Until of late he was involved in the Francis Marion VFW Post #4667 in Marion. This local post recently had honored him as Smyth County's only living World War I veteran. He had served in France between 1918 and 1919 during which time he was awarded a European Expeditionary Medal. He served in the U.S. army and was a member of the Francis Marion VFW Post #4667 of Marion. He had made his home in Smyth and Washington county for the past 50 years and was of the Presbyterian faith.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 54 years, Rosa A. Ball Davis; a grandson, Ronald Davis; a great-granddaughter, April Dawn Clifton; and two sisters.
Survivors include his second wife, Nancy Owens Davis of Marion; four daughters, Mrs. Ellen Ramey, Mrs. Bob (Edith) Booth and Mrs. James (Edna Newman) Horn, all of Tazewell, and Mrs. Gene (Arbutus) Echols of Emory; one son, Robert O. Davis and wife Viola of Elizabethton, Tenn.; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; great-great- grandchildren, nephews and nieces. She attended the University of Virginia, was a graduate of Radford College and taught school for 14 years.

She was born in Atkins, the daughter of the late George S. and Grace Repass Davis. Miss Davis was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Rural Retreat and was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and Fred Davis; two sisters, Maxine Davis and Ella Davis Selvage.

Mr. Davis was born in Ashe County on April 11, 1918 to Wilson and Ollie Farmer Davis. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a 30 year member of the American Legion Post 275. Survivors include his wife, Mozelle McClure Davis; two daughters and sons-in-law, Evelyn K. and Herman L. Jones, Reidsville, N.C., and Joan E. and Jaye B. Baldwin, Whitetop; one stepdaughter and son-in-law, Geneva P. and Johnny A. Johnson, Lansing, N.C.; one stepson, Carl E. Powers, Lansing, N.C.; one brother and sister-in-law, Tam F. and Alma Davis, Whitetop; one sister, Lucille Greer, Marion; four grandchildren, David Jones, Billy Jones, Bryan Baldwin, and Julie Stamper; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held today, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m. at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel in Jefferson, N.C., with the Rev. Chris Goodman and the Rev. Jody Blevins officiating. Interment will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens with military rites.

Beulah Whitaker Davis, age 76, of Chilhowie, died Wednesday, March 17, 1999 at the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie. She was a member of Grosses Creek Baptist Church and was preceded in death by a son, Ralph Bowman.

She was a homemaker and was a member of the Union Hill Community Church in Peebles, Ohio.

HILMA FRYE DEAN, 92, formerly of Austinville, Virginia died Sunday, September 10, 2000 in the Raleigh Court Health Center in Roanoke, Virginia. She was born September 28, 1907, in Pulaski, VA., the daughter of the late Samuel A. and Matilda Bunts Frye of Wytheville. Ms. Dean retired from the Wythe County School System after 32 years teaching, primarily at Austinville Elementary School. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association. She was an active member of Bethany Methodist Church in Austinville, serving as Sunday School teacher and choir member for many years. She was also active with the local senior citizen club. Ms. Dean was preceded in death by her husband, James Walter Dean and a son, Donald A. Dean. She is survived by: two sons - Kenneth Dean and Shirley Stevenson of Roanoke, VA; and James Carlton and Sharon Dean of Waukegan, IL. Mrs. Deans was a lifelong resident of Poquoson where she worked as a homemaker. She was a member of the Tabernacle United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Earl Deans Sr., and one granddaughter.

Clay William DeBoard, age 93, of Sandpoint, Idaho, formerly of Ashe County, died Friday, Feb. 9
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. at Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, on Feb. 15 at Badger Funeral Home.
Mr. DeBoard was born Nov. 3, 1907 in Ashe County to Cicero and Elizabeth Phillips DeBoard. As a young man in the 1920s and 1930s, Mr. DeBoard spent most of his time as a ranch foreman in Eastern Oregon. He married Lessie Sexton in 1938 and moved to Pennsylvania in 1942. Mr. DeBoard worked on the railroads for many years. He then took a position as lineman for the telephone company until his retirement in 1968. Mr. DeBoard returned to Ashe County in 1987 and remained until 1998. He then lived with both his sons in Florida and Idaho until his death. He is survived by two sons: Phillip DeBoard of Sandpoint, Idaho and Michael DeBoard of Florida; and two grandsons, Michael and Mason DeBoard.

William Allen "Babo" DeBord, age 50, of Saltville, died Monday, Jan. 27, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was a member of the Church of God in Allison's Gap where he served as chairman of the Board of Trustees for several years. He was a member of Saltville Volunteer Fire Department. Survivors include his wife, Pam Swartz DeBord; three sisters, Mrs. Larry (Martha) Haynes and Mrs. Todd (Vickie) Stacy, both of Piney Flats, Tenn., and Mrs. Dicky (Jackie) Nutter, Blountville, Tenn.; three brothers, Edward T. Mary J. DeBord, age 74, of Seven Mile Ford, died Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998 at Smyth County Community Hospital. She was the widow of Earl H. DeBord.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia M. and James Aker, Abingdon, and Joyce D. and Michael Stanger, Riverside, Calif.; four sisters, Virginia James, Finleyville, Penn., Vivian Anderson and Dorothy Goodman, both of Abingdon, and June Smith, Evans, Ga.; three brothers, James E. Benjamin R. DeBord, age 69, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mr. DeBord was the widower of Nancy Greer DeBord and retired from the Department of Corrections after 30 years of service.
Surviving are a son, Duane DeBord of St. Libory, Ill., a daughter, Sherrie Thomas of Glade Spring; a sister, Marie Church of Michigan; a grandson, Adam; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted today, Oct. 30, at 11a.m. in Liberty Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. David Neitch officiating. John S. DeBusk, age 83, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 1997 at his home in Glade Spring. He was a native of Washington County and was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Blevins DeBusk.
He was retired from American Electric Power Company, was a 50-year Mason in Bramwell Masonic Lodge, Bramwell, W.Va., and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Joyce DeBusk, Richmond, and Maxine DeBusk Anderson, Northfork, W.Va.; four brothers, Preston DeBusk, Glade Spring, Jack DeBusk and Clarence DeBusk, both of Damascus, and Joe DeBusk, Cabot, Ark.; three sisters, Eula McVey, Tazewell, Mable Bowman, Bristol, and Reba Banner, Welch, W.Va.; three grandchildren; one aunt, Edith Widener, Glade Spring; several nieces and nephews.

Willie E. DeBusk, age 84, died Sunday, April 2, 2000 at her home in Wideners Valley. Mrs. DeBusk was a lifelong resident of Washington County and a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church. She was the widow of Roy Preston DeBusk Sr., and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Katherine DeBusk.

A native of Saltville and Roanoke, she worked for K & W Cafeteria for about 25 years. Edith Hale Delp, age 91, of Rural Retreat, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999 in Wytheville Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Delp was the widow of Glenn P. Delp. She and her husband operated the Old Cedar Springs Store and Service Station from 1951 until the early 1970s. She was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Cedar Springs where she served as pianist for many years. She was preceded in death by her older of two sons, Philip Hale Delp, a former Wythe County teacher.
She is survived by one son and his wife, Mark and Sandra Simmons Delp, Richmond; one daughter- in-law, Mrs. Philip (Jean) Delp, Rural Retreat; three sisters, Lois Swecker, Roanoke, Eleanor Chappell, Murphreesboro, Tenn., and Mrs. Ralph Rhudy, Scotia, N.Y.; one brother, William Norman Hale, Comers Rock; seven grandchildren and spouses: David and Kristin Delp, Richard and Karen Delp, Debra Delp and Dickie Terry, Sarah Delp and Stacy Dixon, all of Rural Retreat, Ken and Susan Delp, Roanoke, Shari Delp and Steve Hayward, Michelle Delp, all of Richmond; nine great- grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren. Larry Edward Dembaugh, 34, of Bristol, Tenn., died Wednesday, March 19, 1997 at the home of his mother in Chilhowie where he had lived for the past year. He was a native of London, England and had lived in the Bristol area for the past 17 years. He was a 1979 graduate of Stafford High School, Fredericksburg, and was a member of Hartwood Presbyterian Church, Hartwood.

Mr. Leonard Wood Dickinson, age 77, of Pahrump, Nevada, formerly of Alleghany County, died Monday, June 14, 1999, in Nevada. Ruth Louise Woodruff Dillard, 69, was remembered at funeral services held Oct. 8 at Lebanon Baptist Church. Rev. Keith Childers and Rev. Gwyn Kilby officiated. Burial followed in the Dillard Family Cemetery in Taylorsville.
Mrs. Dillard was born in Ashe County to the late Charlie Lee Woodruff and Jennie Hodson Woodruff. She was a homemaker and member of Lebanon Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Howard Woodruff; and four sisters, Melinda Woodruff, Fannie Woodruff, Lillian Combs and Mamie Eastridge.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Robert B. Dillard; three sons, Roy Dale Dillard and wife, Carol, Dennis Dillard and wife, Debbie, and Jeffery Allen Dillard, all of Taylorsville; one daughter, Robin Vickie Clay and husband, Larry, both of Taylorsville; two sisters, Fern Mullis and Ruby Rutherford, both of West Jefferson; six grandchildren, Robert (Robbie) Dillard, Christopher Dillard, Jennifer Cahill, Amber Clay, Heather Dillard and Chad Dillard; five great-grandchildren, Brandon Dillard, Ashley Dillard, Zachary Dillard, Darian Dillard and Devin Donahue; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Maude Holman Dillard, age 74, of 186 Wolfe Branch Rd., Sparta, N.C., died Tuesday evening, November 2, 1999, at her home. She was the widow of Franklin Garfield Dillard. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law: Carolyn and Sonny Hudson of Ennice, N.C.; two sons and daughters- in-law: Frank and Debbie Dillard, and Randald and Pat Dillard all of Sparta; two brothers: Jim Holman of Jasper, Tn., and Bill Holman of Statesville, N.C.; one sister: Edna Harless of West Jefferson, N.C.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Little River Primitive Baptist Church with burial in the Sparta Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie-in- state. Samuel F. "Ted" Dillard, age 74, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 1997 at his home in Marion. Mr. Dillard was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church where he taught Sunday School for 17 years. He was the son of the late Sheriff Sam and Nannie Snider Dillard. He graduated from Marion Senior High School and Emory & Henry College.
Mr. Dillard retired from the Virginia Correctional Center for Women in Goochland where he was business manager. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Josephine Weddle Dillard. He is survived by his wife, Louise D. Burke of Marion; one daughter, Carol Moats and husband Tom of Floyd; two stepdaughters, Peggy BeVille and husband Charles of Clearwater, Fla., and Ann Higgins and husband Roy of Louisville, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Aaron Amos, Cody Amos, Arika Amos, Shiloh Amos, and Miriah Amos; four step-grandchildren, Eric BeVille, Donna BeVille, Kimberly Pierce and Roy Higgins II; one great-grandchild.

Samuel H. "Sam" Dillman, age 86, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 1996 in the Summers Continuous Care Nursing Home, Hinton, W.Va.
Mr. Dillman was a member of the Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church and was a carpenter most of his life. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Emma Cleo Dillman, and one step- granddaughter, Lisa Dawn Glascock.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy F. Ruby Lee Smith Dillman, age 94, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000.

James Kenneth Dillman, age 65, died Monday, April 13, 1998 in the VA Medical Center in Salem. He was of the Baptist faith and was a devoted father and loving brother. Mr. Dillman served in the U.S. Air Force for 21 years.
He is survived by one son, James F. Dillman of Dallas, Texas; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy and W.H. Cregger of Marion, Rubye and Trevor Counts of Abingdon, and Violet and Edd Nevarez of Advance, N.C.; one brother and sister-in-law, Junior and Mary Pugh of Marion; several nieces and nephews; two special friends, Charlotte Hutton and Santana Blevins, both of Marion. DILLON
Mr. James Howard Dillon, 69, of Sparta, NC, died Sunday, June 6, 1999, at Alleghany Memorial Hospital. He was born February 23, 1930, in South Bend Ind., to Elmer and May Dillon and grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. After graduating form St. Ignatius High School, he served in the U.S. Navy. He later attended John Carroll University, where he received a degree in sociology. In 1956, he joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a special agent and worked in Washington, D.C., Cleveland, Norfolk, Montgomery and Philadelphia. He later served as an FBI congressional liaison to the United States Senate. While working in Norfolk, Va., he met and married Elizabeth Doughton Dillon. They had two children, Mary Margaret and Patrick. In 1972, the Dillon family moved to Alleghany County, NC, and lived in Laurel Springs for nine years before moving to Sparta. He served as one of the founding members of St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church in Sparta. He laughed easily and always enjoyed a good joke. His Irish heritage was important to him and he loved listening to Celtic and Gaelic folk music. Throughout his life, he remained a wonderfully loving and devoted husband and father and will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife: Betsy, of the home; one daughter: Mary Margaret of Raleigh, NC; one son: Patrick, of Los Angeles, Ca.; and one brother: Father Dennis Dillon of Cleveland, Ohio. A funeral mass will be held Tuesday, June 8, at 1 p.m. at St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church in Sparta, followed by a graveside service at Laurel Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, June 7, from 7-9 p.m. at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. BRADLEY AUSTIN DILLOW, age 20, of Bastian, Virginia went to be with his Lord on Saturday, October 14, 2000. He was employed by ABB in Bland, VA, and the Alexander Lodge in Bastian, VA. Bradley lived life to the fullest and enjoyed hunting, riding his motorcycle, and especially helping his neighbors. His paternal grandparents, Douglas L., Sr. and Mildred Dillow, precede him in death. Surviving are: his parents - Stanley and Bertha Mae Dillow; a sister and brother-in- law - Monica and Steven Mullins; two nephews - Logan and MacCrea Mullins, all of Bastian, VA; maternal grandparents - Harvie and Arron French of Bland, VA; a host of aunts, uncles and many family members who will all cherish the memories of Bradley Dillow.

He was a native of McDowell County, W.Va., and had lived most of his life in Washington County. He was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School superintendent for 45 years and was a deacon.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Cook Dolinger; three daughters, Cheria Milhorne, Abingdon, Darlene Sturgill and Mrs. Bill (Clarice) Armstrong, both of Glade Spring; three brothers, Jerry Dolinger, Glade Spring, Ike Dolinger, Chilhowie, and Bill Dolinger, Sumter, S.C.; four sisters, Ann Collins and Marcella McGrady, both of Marion, Minnie Blevins, Chilhowie, and Hazel DeBord, Bluefield, W.Va.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Catherine Hill Dolinger, age 71, died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999 at her home in Rugby. Mrs. Dolinger was born July 12, 1927 at Mouth of Wilson, the daughter of Robert P. and Spar Blackburn Hill.

Michael Paul Dolinger, age 18, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999 at his home in Seven Mile Ford. He was a member of the Corinth Baptist Church in Rugby. An ardent Hokie fan, he was a 1999 graduate of Chilhowie High School and Smyth County Vocational School. He was employed by Food City of Chilhowie.
Surviving are his parents, Rick and Becky Dolinger of Seven Mile Ford; one brother, Richie Dolinger of Hollywood, Calif.; his maternal grandparents, Nancy and Marvin Reedy of Mouth of Wilson; his paternal grandmother, Emogene D. Wyatt of Chilhowie; a special friend, Catrina Irwin; several aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.

Nancy C. Heffinger Donham, age 57, formerly of Greensboro, N.C., died Thursday, Aug. 7, 1997 at her home in Chilhowie after a long illness.
Mrs. Donham was a native of West Virginia and had lived in Greensboro, N.C., for over 20 years. She worked as a secretary for the U.S. District Court in Greensboro.
She had been living in the Chilhowie area since December. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy J. Donham, and her father, Marvin E. Heffinger. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, Kenneth Donham, Greensboro, N.C.; one daughter, Christina Donham, Greensboro, N.C.; her mother, Eva M. Heffinger, Marion; two sisters, Judith Noble, Woodbridge, and Linda Harrell, Chilhowie; one brother, Jack L. Heffinger, Anawalt, W.Va.; several nieces and nephews.

Paul William Donnelly, 94, was remembered at funeral services held June 24 at First United Methodist Church. Rev. Thomas Griffis, minister, officiated. Entombment was held at Rowan Memorial Park Mausoleum prior to the service.
Mr. Donnelly was born in Ashe County to the late Flora Vesta Latham Donnelly and Gustavus Milton Donnelly. He was a graduate of West Jefferson High School, class of 1925. He attended Appalachian University from 1925-27 and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1932. He was a teacher in Davie, Rowan and Davidson Counties for 43 years, retiring in 1973. He also coached high school baseball and basketball and for 30 years he sold encyclopedias. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Salisbury, the Golden Rule Sunday School Class, a Mason and a member of Retired Teachers Association. Because of his love for music, he played the piano for various Rowan County Senior and civic groups. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucile Martin Donnelly, on May 1, 1996.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Richard Ziglar, Raleigh; one brother- in-law, Walter Martin, Mocksville; one sister, Mary D. Roland, Raleigh; and a granddaughter, Carrie Donnelly Ziglar, Raleigh.

Lindsey Thompson Donnelly, age 77, died Friday, July 2, 1999.

William Howard Dority, age 62, died Tuesday, July 15, 1997 at his home in Niceville, Fla. Mr. Dority was born in Marion on Dec. 29, 1934, to Howard and Rosa G. Sessor Dority and had been a resident of the Northwest Florida area for the past four years. Prior to moving there, he lived in Virginia Beach. Mr. Dority was an insurance Underwriter for 30 years and had been employed by Met Life, Colonial Penn, and Allstate Insurance Companies.
He was a member of the Virginia FAIR plan; the New Hampshire Auto Facility Underwriting Committee; the Alliance of American Insurers; a Representative to Insurance Committees for Motor Vehicle Administrators and gave seminars and training sessions at trade association meetings for over 12 years.
He enjoyed the excitement of power boat races and insured power boat owners during his retirement. He was a member of the Niceville United Methodist Church.

James Thomas Dotson Sr., 85, of West Chester Pa., formerly of Cliffview Community, died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at the Chester County Hospital in Pennsylvania. He was born in Carroll County, July 31, 1914. He served his county in the U.S. Army, World War II, receiving a Purple Heart and Silver Star.

Gladys G. Duncan, age 70, of Rock Falls, Ill., died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 1997 at CGH Medical Center in Sterling, Ill. She was preceded in death by one sister, one son, one daughter, one great-grandson, and her parents.
She was born Sept. 16, 1926 in Chilhowie, the daughter of Hobert and Bertie Combs Stamper. She was retired in 1990 after 27 years as an assembler for General Electric in Morrison. She was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Rock Falls, Ill.
Surviving are two sons, David (Tammy) Duncan of Rock Falls, Ill., and Mark Thomas Duncan of Sterling, Ill.; three daughters, Brenda Sue Gross of Rural Retreat, Janie Helen (Wayne) Yates, and Ruth Ann (Ronnie) Stevens, all of Rock Falls, Ill.; six brothers: Leonard Stamper, Clifford Stamper, Bobby Stamper, and Mac Stamper, all of Chilhowie, William Archie Stamper of North Carolina, and Hobert Stamper Jr. of Boone, N.C.; three sisters, Lakie Madelyn King of Marian, Ill., Madeline Cline and Ann Cullop, both of Chilhowie; 14 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, at the McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls, Ill., with the Rev. Dalmus Meeks of Harvest Time Bible Church in Rock Falls, and the Rev. Ed Merrill of the First Southern Baptist Church in Rock Falls officiating. Burial was at Oak Knoll Memorial Park in Sterling, Ill.

Duncan
Franklin E. Duncan, age 73, of Colonial Heights, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001 at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg.
Mr. Duncan was a native of Smyth County and was a retired plant manager for Pet Dairy Co. He was a member of the Mountain View Methodist Church in Chilhowie.
Surviving are two sons, Jeffrey A. Duncan, and Jamie S. and Amy P. Duncan, all of Colonial Heights; one grandson, Nicholas S. Duncan; two brothers, Kyle Duncan of Hopewell, and Kent Duncan of Tennessee; one sister, Shirley Manuel of Texas; Arlene W. Duncan and Josephine Wolfe also survive him.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, Jan. 11, at noon at the Mountain View Methodist Church Cemetery in Chilhowie with the Rev. John Graham officiating. Everyone is requested to meet at the cemetery.

Grace Gertrude Dunford, 96, of Wytheville, Va., died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, in the Asbury Center at Birdmont in Wytheville, Va.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 16, at 2 p.m. at the Liberty Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Bob Lewis and the Rev. Don Crockett officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion Cemetery.
She was born in Carroll County, a daughter of the late Rufus and Aldorah Reese Pugh. She was a lifelong member of the Liberty Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hobert Early Dunford; and two sons, Dewey B. "Tom" Dunford, and Harless W. Dunford.
Survivors include a daughter, Zerna Dunford Felts of Route 1, Max Meadows, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Herbert T. and Thelma Dunford of Route 3, Wytheville, Va., Willis H. Dunford of Abingdon, Va., Mickey A. Dunford of Route 3, Wytheville, Va., and Margaret Dunford of Greensboro, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Helen Loretta Peyton of Picayune, Miss.; two stepsons, Glen P. Dunford of Holden, W.Va., and Randolph Golding of Mt. Airy, N.C.; two sisters, Ella Stoneman of Bear, Del., and Velen Jones of Cana, Va.; eight grandchildren, nine great- grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren and five great-stepgrandchildren.

Mrs. Dunford was born in Cripple Creek, the daughter of the late Charlie R. and Ella Fay Pack Campbell. She was a member of the Wytheville Church of God of Prophecy and was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Fred R. Dunford; two brothers, Paul and Donald Campbell. Raymond Dunford, age 45, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1997 in his home in Marion. Mr. Dunford was a lifelong resident of Smyth County. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, Latter Day Saints and was preceded in death by her husband, George Muncy Dunford, Sr., a daughter, Myrtle Loretta Roberts and a granddaughter, Jeanette Faye "Sissy" Waller. She is survived by: two daughters and sons-in-law - Mary and Lynwood Flinchum of Pulaski, VA and Judy and Larry Kirby of Max Meadows, VA; two sons and daughters-in-law - Bobby and Mildred Dunford of Pulaski, VA and George M. James Leon Durham, age 73, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999 at his home in Grandview, Mo. Mr. Durham was born Jan. 22, 1926 in Virginia and lived the early years of his life here. He had been a resident of Kansas City, Mo., since 1963. He was employed with General Motors for several years prior to his retirement in 1988. He was a member of Main Street Church of Christ in Grandview, Mo.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Shirley Durham, Grandview, Mo.; two daughters and a son- in-law, Heidi and Dr. Kevin Hornsby of Slocomb, Ala., and Heather Durham, Hartford, Ala.; one granddaughter, Anna Hornsby, Slocomb, Ala.; his mother, Maie Durham, Ceres; several nieces and nephews.

Vester Eugene Dutton, age 62, died Monday, Nov. 29, 1999 in Bristol Regional Medical Center. Clint E. "Eddie" Dyson Jr., age 58, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 1996 at the home of his mother in Marion.
Mr. Dyson was of the Protestant faith, and was a veteran, having served with the United States Army as Staff Sergeant. He had served as the resident golf pro for several golf courses including the Holston Hills Country Club in Marion and had an avid love for golf. He was a graduate of Lees- McRae College.
He is survived by his mother, Edith Wells Dyson of Marion; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Frances and Al Ferguson, and Debbie Dyson, all of Marion, Faye and Oval Chapman of Uniontown, Ohio, and Peggy Stuttaford of Oakland, Calif.; one brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Betty Dyson of Marion; several nieces, nephews, and three great-nieces. Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 22, at 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Andrew Arnold and Dr. William A. Slater officiating.
