Harvey James Abel, age 59, died Thursday, June 26, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Sue Abel, Marion; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie and Carrie Abel, and William Harvey and Bobbie Jean Abel, all of Marion; one daughter and son-in- law, Amanda and James Hagee, Chilhowie; one brother, Reece Abel, Chilhowie; one special nephew, Wayne Abel; several nieces and nephews.

Kenneth Absher, 72, was remembered at funeral services held May 21 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Lonnie Pruitt and Rev. David Grinnell officiated. Burial followed in the Senter Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Absher was born in Ashe County to Mack and Eugenia Bledsoe Absher.
He is survived by his wife, Beth Sheets Absher; one daughter, Becky Perry; one step-son, David Coldiron, Jefferson; one step-daughter, Becky Absher, Jefferson; one brother, Robert Absher, Winston-Salem; and five grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.

James Franklin Ackerman, 65, was remembered at funeral services held April 16 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel in Jefferson. Rev. Jack Pugh officiated. Burial followed with military honors in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens in Jefferson.
Mr. Ackerman was born in Rochester, N.Y. to Clarence and Marjorie Waddell Ackerman. He was a retired first sergeant from the U.S. Army with over 23 years of service, serving both in Korea and Vietnam Campaigns. He was a member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Taylor Ackerman; three sons, Mark Ackerman, Laurel Springs, Dale Pennington, West Jefferson, and James Ackerman Jr., Wilkesboro; two daughters, Barbara Sample, Jefferson, and Wanda Parsons, Crumpler; two brothers, Richard Ackerman, Denver, Colo., and John Ackerman, Newport News, Va.; three sisters, Betty Dean and Judy Rorrer, both of Charlottesville, Va., and Peggy Childres, Maryland; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Farris Adair, age 88, of Glade Spring, died Sunday, March 12, 2000 in Valley Health Care in Chilhowie.
Mrs. Adair was the widow of R.W. Farris and Thomas Bryan Adair. She was a member of Glade Community First Church of God, and was an avid gardener and an award-winning quilter.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Sue Farris Honaker and Betty Farris Zavala.
Surviving are five sons, Elmer Farris and Joe Adair, both of Glade Spring, Moe Adair of Bristol, Curtis Adair of Kingsport, Tenn., Harold Ruetschi Farris of Emory; three daughters, Anne Farris of Glade Spring, Freida Adair Harrington of Abingdon, and Eleanor "Judy" Farris Velasco of Houston, Texas; 19 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

William David Adams, age 57, died Tuesday, June 13, 2000 at his home in Bristol, Tenn.
Mr. Adams was born in Saltville, a son of the late Carl and Melinda Adams. He was formerly selfemployed as a welder.

Beulah Scott Adams, 82, widow of Franklin W. Adams, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 1997 in Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn. She was a lifelong member of the Mount Carmel United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Evelyn A. Sledge of Durham, N.C., and Doris Burnett of Manhattan, Kansas; one brother, Glen Scott of Pasadena, Md.; three sisters-in-law, Anna Adams, Vesta Friesland and Viola Adams, all of Marion; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today, Nov. 15, at 2 p.m. at the Mount Carmel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Calvin Tabor officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. Okie Mae Harrington Adams, age 70, of Seven Mile Ford, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 1998 in the Smyth County Community Hospital. She was a former resident of Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents, Orear and Myrtle Sexton Harrington of Smyth County.
Survivors include her husband, Ralph L. Adams; two sons, Ronald L. Darne, Herndon, and Robert D. Adams, Haymarket; five sisters, Jane Swift, Rita Jennings, Mabel Starkwether, Jeanie Goodnight and Shirley Bobsi; four grandchildren: James and Kevin Darne, Cody and Nicole Adams; two daughters-in-law, Linda Darne, Herndon, and Paula Adams, Haymarket; and several nieces and nephews.

Mae Adams, 94, of Mouth of Wilson, died Thursday, March 1, 2001, at Ashe Living Center, Jefferson, N.C.
She was the widow of Harrison Adams.
She was born June 12, 1906, in Piney Creek, N.C., to Frank and Melissa Moxley Hill.
Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, H.P. and Musetta Adams, Charles and Judy Adams and Donald Joe and Sue Adams, all of Mouth of Wilson, and Dean and Louise Adams of Piney Creek, N.C.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jean and Jack Wagg and Ruth Smith, all of Mouth of Wilson, and Anna Mae and Gerald Henderson of Troutdale; a sister-in-law, Pearl Hill of Mouth of Wilson; 15 grandchildren; 14 great- grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Irene Snow Adams, 71, of Hillsville, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax.
She was the widow of Vaughan Adams.
She was born July 8, 1929, in Independence.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Rebecca Adams of Hillsville; three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Randal Turner of Draper, Freida and Nicholas Edwards of Fancy Gap and Darlene and Rusty Reeves of Baywood; a sister, Louise Hill of Fries; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held Monday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Independence, with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Fred E. Jennings officiated.
Military rites were conducted at graveside by the Hillsville Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 1115.

Retta Louvina Elizabeth Haga Adams, 92, of Chilhowie, died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Juanita Yates.
She is survived by five daughters: Clyde Bernice Thweatt, Marion; Beulah Virginia Branson, Margaret June Hayden, and Reva Mildred Holley, all of Chilhowie; and Elsie Ann Cruey, Prince George; four sons: Melvin R. Adams, Abingdon; Charles R. Adams and Ronald Lee Adams, both of Chilhowie; and James T. Adams, Independence; 27 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Gladys Lundy Adams, 84, of Independence, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C.
She was the widow of William Heffinger.
He was born March 19, 1917, in Marion to Ernest Wesley and Gertrude Crigger Lundy.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Doris and David Hamm of Independence and Mildred and Rondie Mabe of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Loretta Heffinger of San Diego, Calif., Charles and Dorothy Heffinger and Junior and Dorothy Heffinger, all of Independence; a daughter-in-law, Betty Heffinger of Wilson, N.C.; a half sister, Mary Haga; four half brothers, Jack Lundy, Owen Lundy, Ed Lundy and Bill Lundy; nine grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; several great- grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the son of the late Kelly Preston and Lelia Taylor Adams and was preceded in death by a son, John Preston Adams and a daughter, Lena Diane Adams. He had served in the U.S. Air Force. Robert Oury Adkison, age 51, of Norfolk, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000 of injuries received in an automobile accident in Springfield.
He was a self-employed realtor in Norfolk.

Vance Sherrill (Hap) Aker, age 77, of Radford, died Thursday, May 13, 1999 in the Pulaski Community Hospital. Mr. Aker was born Jan. 20, 1922 in Smyth County, the son of the late Wilburn W. and Mary Goodpasture Aker. He was a retired employee of N&W Railway with 37 years of service and was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater.
In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by a daughter, Lana Aker Smith, and a sister, Mildred Dority.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Campbell Aker; one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Carl Duncan of Radford; two sons and daughter-in-law, Donald R. and Anne Aker of Roanoke, and Michael Aker of Radford; one brother, Robert D. Aker of Pulaski; one sister, Mamie Scott, Marion; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

EARL JACKSON AKER, age 95 of Route 3, Wytheville, Virginia, the Piney Community, died Sunday, February 18, 2001 in Edgemont. He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late James W. and Paige Frye Aker. He was retired from the New Jersey Zinc Company a US Army veteran of World War II. Mr Aker was a faithful member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church since the 1930's where he served as superintendent, trustee, chairman of board and song leader. He was preceded in death by three sisters O. Zelma Jones, Mabel Porter and Nannie Shipwash, and two brothers - Sam and Luther Aker. He is survived by: a brother - Dennis Aker of Rout 3, Wytheville; fifteen nieces and nephews - Paige Younger, Beulah Spraker, Dorothy Poole, Pauline Williams, Ray Porter, Mildred Mabe, Peggy Stone, Joyce Dickson, John Porter, Edsel Jones, Sherry Geiger, Joe Aker, Judy Groff, Janey Allen, Susan Wright; sister-in-law - Irene Matthews of Route 3, Wytheville.

Sherrill C. Aker, age 84, of Atkins, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001 at his son's home in Saltville.
Mr. Aker was a member of the Mount Carmel United Methodist Church and was a lifelong resident of the Bear Creek Community in Atkins. He was retired from Brunswick Corporation with 35 years of service.
During his illness, Mr. Aker made his home with his son in Saltville where Janice, his daughter-in-law, provided him with special care.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Cornelia Hess Aker.
He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Waymon and Janice Aker of Saltville, Avery and Rita Aker of Atkins, and Glenn and Patricia Aker of Goose Creek, S.C.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Elbert S. and Sallie Elizabeth Boyd Akers and was preceded in death by a son, Elbert Rudolph "Rass" Akers. He was a Wythe County farmer. He is survived by: his wife - Etta Mae Akers of the home; four daughters - Mary Ellen "Susie" Rose of Max Meadows, Eva Mae "Eugie" Phillips of Winston-Salem, NC, Sally Christine "Ladygal" Sayers of Greenville, SC and Darlene Odessa "Shorty" Creech of Huntsville, TX; two sons - Luther Dueane Akers of Winston-Salem, NC, and Tim Maynard Akers of Max Meadows, VA; one sister - Mae Akers of Charlottesville, VA; three brothers - Joseph S. Akers of Wytheville, VA, James E. He was a native of Chilhowie and a retired truck driver from Commercial Motor Freight Company of Ohio.

Akers<</b>p> Irving Nile Akers, age 85, of Rural Retreat, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998 in the Edgemont Center in Wytheville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Lacy and Callie Atkins Akers; his wife, Frances Neff Akers; and two brothers, Byron (Chub) and Bill Akers.
Mr. Akers was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church. He had served in the United States Marine Corp during World War II, of which 3 1/2 years was spent as a prisoner of war in Japan. Following his discharge from the Marines, he was employed as a Lieutenant on the Guard Force, Radford Army Ammunition Plant where he retired after 25 years of service.
Mr. Akers was a 32nd degree Mason, Shriner, Kazim Temple, Roanoke, and a member of Mt. Airy Masonic Lodge #226 and American Legion Post #229. His civic activities included serving on the Rural Retreat Town Council and a representative to the Smyth-Wythe Joint Airport Commission for several years. He also was a licensed amateur radio operator.
He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Francis Irving (Frank) and Jan Akers, Hillsborough, Calif.; three grandchildren: Kimberly Dawn Akers, Seattle, Wash., James Christopher Akers, Cary, N.C., and Blair and John Akers, Hillsborough, Calif.; four step- daughters and sons-in-law, Jacqueline Kidd and Bill King, Wytheville, June Kidd Wheeler, Atkins, Jean Kidd and Phil Delp, Rural Retreat, and Joyce Kidd and Bob Whitmer, Radford; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Claude Lee and Lou Akers, and Ann Akers, all of Texas City, Texas, and Woodrow and Helen Akers, Wytheville.

Carla Doss Alden, age 48, died Monday, May 11, 1998 in Charlotte, N.C.
Mrs. Alden was born in Johnson City, Tenn., the daughter of Carl and Clara Hart Doss. She was a graduate of Marion Senior High School and Kings College in Charlotte, N.C. She had been a resident of Charlotte, N.C., since 1969.
She was an active member of the Church at Charlotte and a volunteer in many community activities.

Austin Ryan Gerriett Alley, age 6, of Crosby, Texas, died Friday, May 29, 1998 in a Baytown hospital. He was born on June 19, 1991 in Elk Grove, Ill., to Bobby Joe Alley and Mary Kristine Alley.
Austin attended the Crosby Elementary School where he would have been in the second grade this fall. He belonged to the Crosby AWANA Club, and played baseball on the Crosby White Sox Little League baseball team where they placed second.
He is survived by his parents, Bobby and Kristi Alley of Crosby, Texas; three brothers, Justin Taylor, Dustin Nicholas, and Nolan Aaron Alley, all of Crosby, Texas; paternal grandparents, Edward and Carol Hough Alley; maternal grandparents, Travis and Mary Landry; great-grandmother, Florence Alexander; several aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and many close friends from the Crosby, Texas area.

Mr. Allison was a native of Saltville and had lived in the Bristol area for the past 41 years.
He was a retired employee of TVA and attended Shiloh Freewill Baptist Church.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II where he had received numerous decorations and citations, World War II Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal. He was also a life member of the DAV Chapter 40.

Agnes Clear Altman, of Erwin, Tenn., died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999 in Johnson City Medical Center Hospital.
Mrs. Altman was born in Saltville, a daughter of the late Steve and Mae Nutter Clear and lived most of her life in Erwin. She was the widow of George Altman.

She was born May 24, 1933 in the Spur Branch area of Bland County the daughter of the late Sidney Edward Hancock and Bessie Pearl King Hancock. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Faye Amburn. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law: Sheila Houchins of Wytheville; Judy and John Jarrells of Goodview, VA; Barbara and Stevie Viars of Max Meadows, Va. Three sons and daughters-in-law: Danny and Terri Amburn of Max Meadows, VA; Jerry and Debbie Amburn of Kannapolis, NC; and Ronnie and Leigh Amburn of Rural Retreat, VA. A sister and brother-in-law: Mary Etta and Ernest Hamblin of Front Royal, VA; eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive.

He was born in Smyth County, the son of the late William Glenn and Nannie Mary Pierce Anders. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army World War II from 1943 to 1946, was a farmer and was a superintendent, Sunday School teacher and trustee at the First Church of God of Groseclose for several years.

Mrs. Anderson was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late William W. and May Atwell Hanshew. She was a member of the Wytheville Baptist Church and had been a seamstress in the Wythe County area since the mid-1950s.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Anderson; a sister, Kate Rich; and two brothers, Tom and Donald Hanshew.

Mr. Anderson was a 30 year veteran of the United States Navy having served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 360 in Montverde, Fla., a member of Francis Marion VFW Post 4667, a member of the American Legion, and the Fleet Reserve Association. He retired from Disney World in Florida having worked there for 10 years. He was of the Lutheran faith.

Mr. Anderson was born Aug. 6, 1926, the son of the late James A. and Mary Thelma Patterson Anderson. He was married to the late Eulis Rogers Anderson of Marion, formerly of Boydton. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Army and retired from Radford Army Ammunition Plant in 1989.
Mr. Anderson was a member of the Francis Marion VFW Post #4667 and the Marion Church of God.
He is survived by one son, Roger A. Anderson of Boydton; three sisters, Dorothy A. Stevenson of Saltville, Shirley A. Helton of Marion, and Linda A. Doyle of Wytheville; three brothers, Robert M. Anderson, John C. Anderson and Neal Anderson, all of Marion.
Funeral services will be held today, Jan. 29, at 10 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Alley officiating. The committal service will be held Sunday, Jan. 30, at 2 p.m. a Fields United Methodist Church Cemetery near Boydton.

Marshall W. Anderson, 74, of Flatridge, died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at his home.
He was born Feb. 7, 1927, in Grant, the Crossroads Community, to Albert and Atter Anderson.
Survivors include a sister, Annie Smith of Flatridge; three brothers-in-law, Charlie Jones of Mouth of Wilson, Sherman Holdaway of Newark, Del., and Robert Holdaway of Florida; one stepgrandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Verna Cornett Anderson, age 80, formerly of Marion, died Monday, April 24, 2000 at her home in Lynchburg.
Mrs. Anderson was born June 30, 1919 in Flatridge, the daughter of the late John Estil Cornette and the late Alice Izora Haga Cornette. She retired in 1983 from Southwestern State Hospital and was a member of Inglewood Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her former husband, Robert Estil Anderson.

Harold Francis Armbrister, age 68, of Draper, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 1996 at his home. He was born in Max Meadows on Sept. 17, 1928, the son of the late Robert Wiley Armbrister and Hattie Fisher Armbrister. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Baker Armbrister, and a son, Geoffrey Armbrister.
He was a member and deacon of the Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church, a graduate of Bluefield College, a member of the Pulaski Rotary Club, the Draper Ruritan Club, and was a retired manager of the United Cities Gas Co., Pulaski.
Surviving are one daughter-in-law, Connie Armbrister, Marion; two grandchildren, Harold Scott Armbrister and Eric Lynn Armbrister, both of Marion; three sisters, Eva Worrell, Fort Chiswell, Lillian Corvin, Wytheville, and Elizabeth Hurt, Anderson, Ind.; one brother, Paul F. She was the widow of Grover Bayne Archer.
She was born May 28, 1913, in Grayson County to Herbert Jackson and Mary Morriss Jackson.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty E. Archer of Ivanhoe; a daughter-in-law, Carol Archer of Elk Creek; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and five great-great- grandchildren.

RUTH DODGION KENNEDY ARCHER, age 82 of Wytheville, Virginia, died Thursday, November 23, 2000, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. She was born in Wythe County, one of twelve children born to William H and Nannie Catherine Murphy Dodgion. She was a member of the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church, the Wythe County Community Hospital Auxiliary and a volunteer for 25 years with the American Red Cross. She was a retired nurse from Pulaski Community Hospital and was preceded in death by her first husband, William Kelly Kennedy, a second husband, Ray Stuart Archer, Sr., and several brothers and sisters. She is survived by: a brother and sister-in-law - Elbert and Annie Dodgion of Pulaski, VA; four sisters-in-law - Mrs. Lola Dodgion of Wytheville, Mrs. Ethel Lewellya of Pulaski, Mrs. Barbara Dodgion, Mrs. Ann Dodgion, both of Florida; a brother-in-law - Robert L. Sult of Wytheville; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Armstrong was the widow of Ronald Armstrong, a member of the Falling Water Baptist Church, and a retired employee of the Marion Police Department where she was a vehicle dispatcher. She also worked for many years at Scott Furniture Co. in Marion.

She was a native of Saltville and was of the Christian faith.

Virgie L. "Lady" Arnold, age 93, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001 at Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
Mrs. Arnold was born in Saltville, the daughter of the late Edward and Ollie Booth. She was a member of the Main Street Christian Church and a charter member of the Saltville Home Demonstration Club. She was a beloved wife, mother and friend.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Minister Elbert Roy Arnold; two sons, Elbert R. "Buck" Arnold and Richard A. "Jack" Arnold; six brothers, Hack Booth, Eugene Booth, Malcolm Booth, L.B. Booth, Frank Booth and Sylvester Booth.

She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Elmer Gleaves and Ada Maggie Ayers Arnold. She was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Ratcliff and three brothers, Clyde, Jr., Billy Joe and Ralph Gleaves Arnold. She is survived by a lifelong friend and companion Elizabeth Smith; four sisters - Rosa Lee Huff of Floyd, Maggie McGee of Max Meadows, Emily Aline Wilson and Etta Pearl Riggs both of Staffordsville, VA; two brothers - Elmer James Arnold of Max Meadowss and Frankliln Arnold of Staffordsville, VA; two special nieces Kay Mabe of Max Meadows and Pam Riggs of Narrows; numerous other nieces and nephews also survive.

Ralph Eugene Asbury, age 82, of Asbury Center at Birdmont Retirement Center in Wytheville, formerly of Rural Retreat, died Sunday, April 11, 1999 in Wythe County Community Hospital.
He was born in Tazewell County, the son of the late James L. and Carrie McGuire Asbury. He was a graduate of Bluefield Business College, class of 1935, a retired controller with Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion, a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Wytheville, a member of the Rural Retreat Lions Club, and a former member of the Marion Rotary Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Looney Asbury.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Robert DeBord, Rural Retreat; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Dannita Asbury, Bloomington, Ill., and Alan and Karen Asbury, Fayetteville, N.C.; two sisters, Doris Brown, Flint, Mich., and Shirley Cochran, Port Charlotte, Fla.; three brothers, James P. Nancy K. Ascue, age 59, of Wardell, died Saturday, April 24, 1999 at her home following a brief illness.
Mrs. Ascue was a native of Smyth County, the daughter of the late Enoch and Mary Branscum Horne. She was a graduate of VPI with a master's degree and was a retired agricultural and 4-H extension agent having served in Russell and Tazewell Counties for nearly 40 years. She was an adjunct instructor at Southwest Virginia Community College and Virginia Highlands Community College. She was past president of the National 4-H Extension Agents Association and was owner of Ascue's Antiques at Wardell.
Mrs. Ascue was a long time member of the Belfast United Methodist Church where she served in many capacities as church lay leader. She was presently chairperson of the Missions Committee and teacher of the Ladies Bible Class.
She is survived by her husband, W. George Ascue; several cousins and numerous friends and neighbors.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, April 27, at 7 p.m. at the Belfast United Methodist Church with the Rev. Janice Robertson officiating. Graveside services and burial will be held today, April 28, at 11 a.m. at the Blue Springs Cemetery near Sugar Grove.

Charles Y. Ashton, age 71, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 1996 in All Saints Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and Berniece Ashton and one grandson, Charley Ashton.
He was a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. His many decorations included the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with four oakleaf clusters. He was a life member of the Elks Club and All Saints Episcopal Church.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Opal Ashton, Fort Worth, Texas; two sons, Chuck Ashton Jr. of Burleson, Texas, and Mike Ashton of Fort Worth, Texas; one daughter, Patty Koski of Marion; one sister, Sydney Youngson, La Jolla Calif.; six grandchildren.

Mr. Ashworth was a veteran of the US Army-Air Force, World War II and a member of the American Legion Post # 229. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Virginia Reedy Ashworth. Ruth Vance Atkins, age 78, of Atkins, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Atkins was born April 10, 1921 in Lashmeet, W.Va., the daughter of the late James and Leivasy Vance. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star York Chapter 10 in Yorktown and was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fon Lester Atkins and a daughter, Leivasy Tiller.
She is survived by two sons, Kenneth Tiller and wife Helen of Caretta, W.Va., and Danny Atkins of Atkins; one daughter, Fonda Atkins Hagy and husband Carl of Wytheville; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two very special friends, Marlene Carmoney and Norma Carr, both of Atkins.

Margaret Isabella Atkins, age 97, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999 in Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home.
Miss Atkins was the daughter of the late W.J. and Charlotte Holmes Atkins. She was a member of the Royal Oak Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School and The Catechism for 25 years. She played on the High School State Basketball Championship Team in 1920. She attended Marion College, Hollins College, Drexal College, graduated from Brenau College and was a member of the Tri Delta Sorority. She later received her Master's Degree from Virginia Tech and taught at the college level in Summerville, N.J., and Lutherville, Md.
Miss Atkins was a member of the Marion Garden Club, the Smyth County Historical Society and played Bridge and Contract Bridge.
Surviving are two nephews, K. W. Callan of Marion, and W.J. Baughman of Johnson City, Tenn.; three nieces, Margaret Ketner of Salisbury, N.C., Helen Brooke of Millcreek, Wash., and Charlotte Williams of Richmond.

Beatrice G. Atkinson, age 87, died Monday, Sept. 15, 1997 at Lower Bucks Hospital in Bristol, Penn.
She is survived by six sons, Garnette Hoover and Bob Atkinson, both of Newportville, Penn., Paul A. Atkinson of West Virginia, Garland Atkinson of Fairless Hills, Penn., Ralph Atkinson of Florida, and Cecil Atkinson of Reno, Nev.; one brother, Buford McCoy of Calypso, N.C.; 19 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held today, Sept. 20, at 10:30 a.m. in Rose Lawn Cemetery.

Barbara Jean Atwell, age 54, died Tuesday, July 1, 1997 at her home in Marion.
Mrs. Atwell was a native of Smyth County and a member of the Gethsemane Baptist Church. She was a registered nurse having received her Associate Degree from the Wytheville Community College. She was employed in the Intensive Care Unit of the Wytheville Community Hospital.
Mrs. Atwell was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Myrtle Testerman and two sisters, Hilda Dennison and Kate White.
Survivors include her husband, Carl Atwell; two daughters, Rita Faye Cutler, Bavon, and Brenda Kay Sexton, Virginia Beach; one brother, Robert Testerman, Roanoke; one grandchild, Joshua Casey Sexton.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 4, at 11 a.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Pat Gilbert officiating. Interment followed in the Slemp Cemetery.

Atwell
Alfred William Atwell, age 68, of Groseclose, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998 in the Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was born on June 29, 1930 in Smyth County, the son of the late Truby W. and Bertha Gullion Atwell. Mr. Atwell was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was an employee of Virginia House Furniture of Atkins for 32 years as a lumberyard supervisor. He was preceded in death by a brother, Estel Atwell.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Peggy Stanberry Atwell; one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Janie Atwell, Groseclose; one grandson, Jason W. Atwell, Groseclose; two brothers and sister- in-law, Walter W. and Doris Atwell, Groseclose, and R.C. Atwell, Hillsville; four sisters and brother-in-law, Ethel Childress, Evelyn Smith and Ruby Cox, all of Crockett, and Gladys and Jimmy Johnson, Rural Retreat; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 11 a.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Doug Stuart officiating. Interment followed in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat. The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the American Cancer Society or to the Rural Retreat Emergency Services.

Ethel Jane Atwell, age 63, of Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1998 at her residence. She was a member of the Green Mountain Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Charles W. Atwell of Princeton, W.Va.; two daughters and sons-in- law: Maggie and Nathan Lovern of Rural Retreat, Mary and Gary McPeak of Wytheville; one son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Laura Atwell of Wilmington, Ohio; two sisters: Betty Hudak of Pennsylvania and Marie Schaeffer of Gloucester, NJ; two brothers: Jimmy Schaeffer of Gloucester, NJ, Raymond Schaeffer of California; three grandchildren: Crystal Dawn McPeak, Nikki and Steven Atwell.

Fred Carlisle Atwell, age 73, of Rural Retreat, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998 at the home of his daughter in Martinsville.
Mr. Atwell was born in Smyth County, the son of the late Franklin Perry and Minnie Dillman Atwell. He was a retired contractor and master carpenter. His commitment to quality and his craftsmanship graced many homes in Wythe County. The role in life which he deemed most important was that of father and grandfather.
Mr. Atwell was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by a brother, Franklin Harlow Atwell.
He is survived by three children and spouses: Fred C. Jr. (Buster) and Alice Atwell, Pilot Mountain, N.C., Brenda A. and David Gilbert, Martinsville, and Thelma A. and Michael Miller, Crockett; six grandchildren and grandson-in-law, Julie and Jay Gillespie, Harrisonburg, Ann-Alyssa King, Richmond, Tyyne Miller, Crockett, September Webster, Druid and Briana Atwell, all of Pilot Mountain, N.C.; one sister, Ruth Tibbs, Rural Retreat; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 29, at 1 p.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church with Pastor Joe Shumate and Pastor Ed Schaack officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Graveside military rites were conducted by Marion VFW Post 4667. Catherine Virginia Atwell, age 76, of Rich Valley, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999 in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Atwell was a native of Smyth County. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Brown Atwell, and one son, Ronnie Atwell.
Survivors include four sons, Silver Atwell and Mike Atwell, both of Taneytown, Md., Danny Atwell, Sykesville, Md., and Mickey Atwell, Chilhowie; two daughters, Judy Ledford, Johnson City, Tenn., and Sue Mariner, Rich Valley; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

Okie Pierce Atwood, age 89, widow of James T. Atwood, died Sunday, March 12, 2000 at Trivett's Private Christian Home for the Elderly in Chilhowie.
Mrs. Atwood was a member of the Troutdale Baptist Church.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Evelyn and Jack Rutherford of McDonough, Ga.; two sons and daughters-in-law, William and Noni Atwood and B.J. and Margaret Atwood, all of Marion; one sister, Mamie Richardson of North Tazewell; two sisters-in-law, Denton Atwood of Marion, and Marie Atwood of Troutdale; four grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild.

Harold E. "Buddy" Authenreith, age 76, died Friday, Nov. 15, 1996 at his home in Marion.
Mr. Authenreith was a graduate of the Marion Junior College and was employed by the Smyth County Community Hospital in the housekeeping department for over 20 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and had worked at the old Lincoln Theater for several years. He was a member of the Francis Marion VFW Post #4667.
Mr. Authenreith was preceded in death by his parents, Blanche and Howard Authenreith and one brother, Lonnie Authenreith.
He is survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and many loving friends.
Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, in Barnett's Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery with military honors being conducted by the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667. Barbara Mary Goodwin Avery, 81, will be remembered at a memorial service in April in Arms Cemetery in Shelbourne Falls, Mass.
Mrs. Avery was born in Fremont, Ind. to Warren O. Goodwin and Louise Carroll Powers Goodwin. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Burton Wright Avery.
She is survived by three sons, John C. Avery and Peter H. Avery, both of Jefferson, and Kirk B. Avery, Denver, Colo.; a daughter, Karen Solon, Falls Church, Va.; a brother, Charles W. Goodwin, California; a sister, Ann E. Dole, Massachusetts; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
