Mrs Callie Houk, 103 dies near Independence

Independence - Mrs. Callie D. Houk,, after having reached the advanced old age of 103 years, died at her home in thePine Mountain section, a few miles north of here, early Thursday morning, October 19, 1978. She is the widow of Floyd Winton Houk and she reached her 103rd birthday August 30, 1978.

Mrs. Houk was born in Grayson County, August 30, 1875, the daughter of a Primitive Baptist minister, Elder Peter Kenly Roberts, and Mrs Margaret Evelyn Stroupe Roberts. She had three brother who were Primitive Baptist ministers - Elders Garfield, Coy and Steve Roberts.

She was the last surviving member of her family.

Early in life she was married to Floyd Winton Houk. Nine children were born to them, four of whom survivie her, as follows: Mrs. Flora Smith, Woodlawn, Mrs. Ruth Cassell, Mrs Laura Hamah Lineberry and Steve Houk, all of Independence. Also surviving are 23 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 62 great-great-granschildren.

Her husband died July 16, 1918, she having been a widow for 60 years. She lived throughoutall these years with her son, Steve Houk.

Johnson Houk and Steve Houk, who lived many years ago near Spring Valley, on the Briar Patch Mountain, were uncles of Winton Houk, and presumably, were brothers of Fielden Houk, his father.

Services were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 21, at Pilgrim's Rest Primitive Baptist Church by Elder O. A. Harris.

Internment followed in the church cemetery.

Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Independence, was in charge of arrangements.
